Bowyer: Encouraging Signs for the Future
Bowyer: Encouraging Signs for the Future
Wednesday, 21st Mar 2012 15:33

Lee Bowyer points to the improvement in form of several players as encouraging factors to suggest Ipswich could enjoy a more productive 2012/13 campaign.

Bowyer said: “JET has had a good back end to the season and Lee Martin has done well. They weren’t really that involved in the first half of the season.

“JET has got fitter and done very well. There are a lot of midfielders in contention but you need that many, especially in this division with the number of games you have to play and the fact that there will always be injuries and suspensions.

“I picked up my groin injury because I tried to play on the Monday [versus Nottingham Forest on January 2] following a game on the Saturday. Jimmy Bullard was ill and I said ‘I’m a bit stiff but I’ll try’.

“I now know it’s not something I should have done. Years ago I could have done it but not now. The manager has said I’ve done well coming off the bench and I accept it’s a squad game.

“I’ll keep working hard in training and with so many games coming up the manager might think it best to make changes, even if it is just to freshen things up.”

Bowyer is too old.

I think its really positive that he recognises that it is a squad game now, and that his value is really in guiding these younger players through. Lee is saying all the right things ATM!

Definitely has next year in him as our squad player we need to have the likes of him if we are to push on and gain promotion next year.

What better way for him to retire his career then to get us promoted next year!

'I'm a bit stiff but I'll try'

Got to question team selection there...

I agree with Lee. He should make way and allow the large sums we are spending on his wages to bring in younger players.

In my mind hasn't really done enough this season to warrant playing next season for us - I was a bit sceptical when we signed him.

Too right he should make way for the hungrier younger players.

Bowyer is not our future in fact I don't think he is the present and should move on. We don't need him and he is costing money that could be used on a younger more hungry player. Even in his hayday I don't believe he was the type of player we need at Ipswich.

I agree that we should build the team next season around the likes of Drury, Hyam, Carson, JET. BUT if the deal was right for the club i would be happy to see one more year out of Bowyer. IF we are up there next season pushing for promotion it would be very useful to have an old head around the squad. There will be those sticky patches where things are not going well and we may need a bit more grit in the middle at times.

I like Bowyers honnesty here ... he is a good example of a player who could and should go into a mangement role his seeing what a manger would see would be good if he took up a coaching role with us I think he has plenty to offer in fact very tidy player.
