Wright Hoping for First Team Return
Wright Hoping for First Team Return

Keeper Richard Wright insists he’s still able to perform at Championship level. The 34-year-old was back on the bench for Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Barnsley as deputy to Arran Lee-Barrett after Alex McCarthy's recall by Reading.

Wright, who is contracted to the Blues until the end of the season, told the club site: "I've kept myself in tip-top condition and I know I can still perform at this level.

"[Goalkeeper-coach] Malcolm [Webster] has been working me really hard in training and I'm fit and ready if called upon.

"Arran has the shirt at the minute, but he knows he's got me breathing down his neck for that starting place.

“I haven't given up on playing,” added Wright, who spent time on trial with MLS side Dallas FC earlier in the year, “I want to play as many games as possible and I've just got to keep working hard in training and showing the gaffer what I can do."

But despite still looking to get back in the Town side, the former England, Arsenal, Everton, West Ham and Sheffield United man, is starting to think about what he’ll do after his playing days: "I'm doing my coaching badges at the moment. Taking up a role as a goalkeeping coach is something to consider in the long-term."

Wright has made one appearance since rejoining his hometown club for a third spell in November.

MarcusSg.. because the defence is square pegs in round holes, two left footed cb's And Delaney is a liabilty and carlos for all his attacking prowess, his football skills , his fitness levels he is not a dedicated fb, he is far to often ball watching and at times his positional sense is non-existent, can you not see we need to have a defence ready for the premiership if we get there, cant get there first and then get the players in wholesale changes upset teams. Take the 2000 season we stormed the prem, finished 5th with an established team. was the following season when we spent millions that the team crashed..

AS for righty, thats a shame but a former england no1 whos now only a reserve keeper to the no2, that is a shame. And DAleyitfc, i did not see a host of top clubs after his signature in the close season or when the season began, did you? Coaching is now the way forward for him in all honesty....coyb

Wright is a very sad tale of why not to go running after the bright lights too early, he could have had an amazing career but sadly it all went wrong when he moved to the prem. He has it in him without a doubt but think its sadly too late for him to now reach his true potential. The point about the under 18s being in a poor run till Cropper returned is interesting.

Nice to see his nurse changed daley's medicene! he was so grumpy last week....

Agree with Wrighty being given a start, though, and I still cant believe the number of posts that slag one of our own who has given such good service in the past and owes us nothing.

show some respect people.

We should not slag off Richard Wright, that show's our ignorance for our Club?. Wright had been a great keeper for Ipswich over the years. But in my opinion made a bad choice to move on to bigger richer Club's.He is not in the same class of player as he was.I think he also know's this ,hence the reference he make's regarding taking up a Goalkeeping coaching position in the future.Wright stated he was leaving for a position in the USA,this should rule him out of playing other than being on the bench for the short term.He is still a good keeper but,we need a long term player foe Town. Sorry Richard you were one of the best some time ago. COYB

ALB has made some outstanding saves to keep us in matches at times this season. He's made errors, but so has every keeper who's played in matches for us this season and so does every keeper at times at any level.
The problem I'd have with putting Wright in goal is that he's not going to be match sharp and so many Town fans focus on the negative so much that one error and suddenly everyone would turn on him. That would do him wonders for his confidence wouldn't it!!

I think that people are bonkers to think or say that Richard Wright is finished or not good enough for Ipswich Town or the Championship. This man is capable of being our number 1 for the rest of the season and many seasons to come. (He is 34, not 74) There are goalkeepers about who are in there prime who are nearer 40. People must remember, a goalkeeper is only as good as the defence in front of them.

Wright was our player of the year but a few seasons ago in a team that finished just outside the playoffs twice .He was ruined by the idiot that is Keane at the time like a number of players were Martin,Mac,Priskin,Garvan etc and lost all confidence .
I still rate him higher than ALB who is not good enough for this league IMO and has cost us more points this season than he has saved us ,and higher than Murphy,Fulop and McCarthy who we have had since

Has he got a Deal in the USA or not . If he has There is no point in this conversation he is or is not good enough to play for us is there? The last time I heard he was off to the USA at the end of this season.is he or not going.?

Believe the deal in the USA is not happening, think Phil sent post aound that they have several candidates for the role. correct Phil?

Would have RW back in team ahead of ALB. Still feel that he is best keeper at Club and that like many players in the team, a run of games will do him well. As Surco pointed out, if it hadn't been for the muppet Keane, he could well still have been here from last stint having played regularly through out that time. PJ, why not ask Webster if in doubt, he knows a good keeper IMO.

I would play Wrighty over ALB every day of the week, sure ALB is a great shot stopper but his kicking is terrible, he never comes for crosses, and he has a habit of letting the ball slip through his body on low shots giving us nightmares.
10 out of 10 for effort but im never comfortable when he's in the sticks

Phill iS osborne1nil Correct ? Did you post that they have several candidates for the position in the USA .Was Richard Wright turned down? If he was why has he not figured in Ipswich plan's to date. We hear that he is fit and training all the while,so Why has he not been in the frame for Town considering the problems in that area exist? . Puzzled ??
