Jewell: JET Going Nowhere
Jewell: JET Going Nowhere
Friday, 27th Apr 2012 07:00

Town boss Paul Jewell says midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas will be going absolutely nowhere this summer. The 21-year-old ex-Arsenal man’s form in the second half of the season has attracted the interest of Premier League clubs with scouts from Fulham and QPR regular visitors to Portman Road to catch him in action.

Jewell has received no enquiries regarding any of his players but even if he had, Emmanuel-Thomas would be going nowhere.

“I’ve received no interest at all,” he said. “I keep saying that I don’t think anyone’s got our phone number because no one ever rings me to ask about any of our players. But Jay’s not going anywhere. Absolutely not."

The Blues boss believes the Londoner has become a fans’ favourite as the season has progressed: “He’s always had ability, I think everyone knows that.

“When we first brought him here I could see the crowd were going to love him or hate him. He lumbers around the pitch but he’s taken to the role and I think Ipswich fans have taken to him.

“I think every time he gets the ball, we’re all guilty of it, he gets you off your seat and you think something’s going to happen, but it’s not always going to happen.

“He’s got into the situation where he realises he’s doesn’t have to do something special with the ball all the time.

“He’s maturing all the time, he’s only young and, as I’ve said, he needs to get fitter. Playing so many games at a high intensity has been a bit of a shock to him and I’m sure he knows what’s expected when he comes back for the first day next year.”

Unless we get a crazy Wickham-style bid he should stay, as we need to develop the likes of Emmanuel-Thomas and bring in other young players too whom we can bring on over the next few years to mould a promotion side.

I can see players getting sold if it means missing out on fines in the new financial fair play

Why would he go to QPR. We'll be playing them next season. And Fulham are a good bet for the drop soon. He'd be much better off staying in our Championship winning team for end of next season. LOL

JET is one of the few reasons to keep coming back to Portman Road at the moment, am excited to see how he progresses next season.

PJ has made mistakes with some signings & in how he has dealt with some situations. jas & others have been right with some of their more constructive criticism at times; but with regard to JET the manager has gotten it spot on. Credit where it's due on this on, he is also worth at least 3x what we paid for him now.

I thought that final decisions were down to ME and Clegg if so then it's goodbye JET.

To be fair I can't see any reason as to why Fulham would want to sign JET at this stage.

Don't get me wrong I think he has great potential, but has not justified a fee that would make it worth us selling him.

I think next season will be a big one for him, but he is clearly not ready for the premiership yet.

Anyone who says PJ doesn't like younger players, how come he signed JET and Cressy? Maybe we need to get over ourselves about the youngsters and stop assuming that every young player who comes through the youth system are destined for greatness. In reality over the last few years who have we produced who has gone onto higher places?
Going back to the Burley days we have Dyer, Bent, and Bramble. It never really worked out for Richard Wright, Rhodes may go onto bigger things (although he wasn't a fully fledged product of our academy) and Wickham is still to prove himself. As for the rest, playing at Championship level or lower so maybe PJ knows something we all don't and that is that our youth set up at the moment is not quite up to standard.

Good to hear. Cresswell and JET are two players who are considered part of a building process. Young, but with some experience. Good signings. sadly the same can not be said about the players signed last Summer and who are already leaving. That was a waste of time. But JET is certainly one for the future and who has loads of ability!

agree entirely with buryblue77 above - could make a great 'academy' team - if only we'd kept hold of these gems...

Shane Supple - now retired
Chris Casement - playing semi pro football in N. Ireland
Aidan Collins - playing for Chelmsford City
Gerard Nash - retired through injury
Scott Barron - didn't even make Millwall's team last week
Matt Richards - good servant for the club but now found his level at Shrewsbury
Scott Mitchell - now at Lowestoft Town
Darryl Knights - now at Newport County
Dean Bowditch - now at MK Dons

you see a theme emerging here - sure there is the odd Jordan Rhodes in there who can score prolifically in League 1 against teams like Tranmere and Rochdale, and Wickham who has scored how many PL goals this season?! We need to stop assuming every academy player will be the next Messi - more often than not the kids don't make the grade, and if it is a matter of taking the money and running then so be it - £10m for Wickham was a great bit of business, and I'm sure if anyone offers us £5m+ for JET he will go too, but I can't believe he is irreplaceable - we have other youngsters like Carson and Hyam waiting in the wings, and a bit of extra cash to lure the players we need in would be welcomed.

I think JET is good, but nothing special - he only runs when he chooses to, very rarely have we seen him make a late lung bursting run into the box at PR this season, instead opting for the amble towards the 18 yard box. Maybe in time we can coach that laziness out of him, but is he worth the hassle? Why not get £5m+ in for him and use that on a finished article, still mid-20s (so not too old for the anti-pensioner brigade on here), who can score and create - notice Ross Wallace has been doing pretty well for Burnley this season for instance.

I doubt our posts get noticed by PJ, NC and ME anyway so us identifying transfer 'targets' for them doesn't really help, but lets try and all get behind the club/manager - that's what is killing us more than anything - people moan about the players not being good enough and the manager is rubbish, but ultimately the 16,000 people in a half empty PR on a Saturday won't all agree, so let's all agree to get behind whoever the 11 in the blue and white are and MAKE A BIT OF NOISE on a matchday - its getting embarrassing now - home support will fire the boys up and we can get back up the league into the Promised Land!

COYB!

Wonderful news, Jet is one player that everyone wants to see on the ball, yes sometimes he loses it quickly, but often he shows magical skills with it as well, I think he alone could encourage more people to come to see matches at at Portman Road, he certainly gets me sitting on the edge of my seat regularly, we need to build a team around our most talented players and not let them go too easily.

Thanks NorwichBlue__138, glad to have some backing on an opinion, I generally try and look at the bigger picture and it's obvious to you that our youth system hasn't produced.
You mention Hyam and Carson, good players but again not the world class superstars that you'd think by how some talk about them on here.
Agree and disagree with you about JET, I think he can be special, has all the ability but as you say he an be a bit lazy so if he could sort that out he could be excellent. If we were to sell him, personally I'd like to see a little bit more than £5m but I think we would sell him if that sort of offer came in, I just hope we use the money if he goes, unlike the £3m we spent out of receiving £8m for Wickham.
We need another 4-5,000 fans at PR to make some noise and make the ground look more full, I wish I could get to more games but working most Saturdays means I can't make merely as many as I want.
COYB!!!

He doesn't add that Marcus Evans or Simon Clegg have said he is going nowhere. We have sold players in all of the recent close seasons. With money being at it's tighest ever, there's nothing to suggest we won't this summer.

"No-one ever rings me about any of our players" I wonder why this is Mr Jewell, ever occurred to you that's because nobody is remotely interested in them, quite honestly there are only a couple that anybody would want, and as for JET going nowhere, wait until some Prem club offers upwards of 3M, he'll be gone like a shot and quite honestly that is his value so why not, in any case the player will want to go if we get an offer, welcome to the real world.
