Clegg: Jewell Still the Right Man for Town
Clegg: Jewell Still the Right Man for Town
Thursday, 3rd May 2012 08:42

Town chief executive Simon Clegg believes that manager Paul Jewell is still the man to take the Blues back into the Premier League despite conceding that 2011/12 was another season of “mid-table mediocrity”. Jewell, who was appointed in January 2011, has another year on his contract at Portman Road.

Clegg said: “There were a lot of people calling for the manager’s head at the back end of last year when we were going through that difficult phase.

“The owner and I discussed it and were absolutely confident that Paul could turn things round, and we continue to believe that he’s the right man with the right experience to take us back into the promised land. Only time will tell.”

He admits though that 2011/12 has been another under par campaign: “Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s mid-table mediocrity. That’s not where we want to be, that’s not where we aspire to be, so in that context we have to be disappointed.

“We were always going to play catch-up after that disastrous run at the end of last year, which really tested everyone, but I think that once we started to turn things around — Barnsley, West Ham — then we had a very reasonable run.

“Four losses in the last 19 games is not a bad way to finish the season but we didn’t play with the level of consistency throughout the season which is going to be necessary if we aspire to promotion to the Premier League.”

Jewell has admitted getting his transfer business wrong last summer but Clegg says he and owner Marcus Evans were also involved in the process which saw a number of high profile senior players brought to the club, an approach which failed to work out: “Let’s take collective responsibility. It’s not appropriate to point the finger and say that that’s one individual’s responsibility.

“I think we all have to take a degree of collective responsibility but I think it needs to be recognised that in the main the issue of player identification is down to the manager, and the owner and I feel an obligation to support him in that.

“But ultimately, the three of us have to carry some responsibility for the decisions which have been made. We tried to go up one route, invested a lot of money and it didn’t work.”

Jewell himself says going into the final year of his contract, with no discussions so far regarding a an extension, doesn’t add any additional pressure: “I know it is a year to go, but it wouldn’t have taken a lot of money to get rid of me last year, so it won’t be a money issue. And if I felt it was the right thing to do, I would walk away for free.

“I just hope I am here for a long time and I can bring success. I love working here, I love the area. It ticks all the boxes but the one at the top of the list is getting the team right.”

I think we need to hold onto Jewell until Hodgson gets his marching orders from the FA.

That'll be July then!

righty - for once you have asked a sensible question instead of just ranting anti PJ comments so i will give you my answer to it. Its only my interpretation so cant comment on others.
I would also again state i am not pro PJ but just think we shouldnt change manager again at this point.
Last season was very disappointing, no question.
PJ made some mistakes in his transfers (Ing and Ellington and to a lesser extent Bowyer), no question.
Did he use too many loan players - yes in my opinion he did, however part of this was down to the fact that we seem to have a problem getting players to come to Ipswich. Now this isnt his fault. Some on here state its ME and SC fault but i seem to recall RK and JM citing the same issue. I dont know why it is, i think some of it is geographical and some may be down to money issues.
We have heard now that Norris was on 18k a week at Portsmouth !!! That is incredible and they were clearly destined to fail, and to be honest they have got what they deserved (the club not their fans). Do i think we should go down that road ? no of course i dont, we need to cut back and if that means we lose signing a few greedy players then so be it, but i think that is why he turned to loan signings.
The Peterborough game was an embarrassment and we were shipping goals terribly, so in short up until the Leeds game things were very poor.
However factor against that the fact that the squad and club morale seemed to be in such a mess from RK and that PJ made a lot of signings, i and i expect a lot of others didnt expect miracles straight away.
PJ signed JET (long way from finished but one of the most exciting players for a long while) . He signed Cresswell, player of the year. He signed Drury (yes i know he nearly left but he didnt and PJ signed him). Lee Martin and Jason Scotland look like new players since RK left and to be honest most of the loan players were good (and we tried to sign two of them ), Collins, Stockdale, Murphy and Andrews all good players.
In the second half of the season when we played well it was the best football i have seen there for several years, certainly miles better than RK.
In our first 27 games we conceded 54 goals (two per game), in our last 19 it was 23 (1.2) so we have tightened up. The defence needs work as do a couple of other areas but on the whole i still say we are 3/4 players short of a really good match day squad.
All you PJ haters may be proved right and in several months i may be agreeing with you but i still say he deserves this summer and at least til xmas and then lets see where we are.
Without getting too deep and meaningful i think football supporters like society in general expect and demand everything immediately and it almost as if patience is a weakness. Its not. PJ may not be the right man for us, i hope he is but considering the size of the task and all other factors i in my opinion think he deserves a bit more of it.

Sometimes I wonder what you lot are on. The man has had 18 months....you just cannot fashion a new team in such a timeframe. He has inherited a squad of average players.....we have to be honest and admit that before he came here very few of our players would feature regularly in a top half of the table team. To get people to move to hte back of beyond is a nightmare. Even if we offer comparable wages to the higher placed clubs the cost of visiting relatives, getting a decent property and getting hte kids to a decent school is prohibative. We are an average team, we need a revamp, and Jewell is trying....do you really think he would still be in a job if the multimillionaire businessman Marcus Evans saw no possibility of a return on his investment?? Jesus christ it isn't the 1970's.....we are not, and never will be, a power in English football again.....we just have to face the fact that until we get a lucky season, or some youngsters come good this is us...average, mid table, going no where...and yes I am a season ticket holder and have been since the glory days of John Duncan...so I'm not spouting from my ivory tower....

Rant over...back to work!

Walberswick - you really want him out - and who would you replace him with that is available. Please answer. It has to be someone with experience because otherwise the board will not back him - so just who exactly. And would you want your season ticket money and the other 11,500 who have signed up to pay for his sacking rather than investment in the team.

Well said Dozzells Bobblehat agree totally ,and too be fair if Chopra hadnt had such good spells and Jewell turned around Scotland then Ellington may have played and the outcome been a lot different ,too completely slag off Ellington when he started 1 league game is incredible and leads to your comment about society wanting too much too soon and picking easy targets to be able to moan .

And JohnWarkytash spot on

And Walbersdick over the period just before we were top of the form table so proves very little ,also over the period you described we were above Brighton and Palace who won 0 games do you think their so called supporters are calling for Poyet and Freedman to be sacked ?

PJ has got 2 teams promoted to the Premiership and kept them there. Some jobs (aka the mess Keane left us in) take more time than others. He has brought in a great left back, made Carlos into a player of the year right back. Tommy Smith finally looks good and dare I say it (don't prove me wrong now Tommy) consistent.

PJ got the best out of Lee Martin, purchased Drury (who looks brilliant) for peanuts, while JET is being bedded in and looks like a bargain. Stevenson will be interesting next season, could be an absolute snip at £50k.

Up top Chopra was a bargain imo. And Scotland has come good.

I think PJ has failed to sort out our gk situation and a cb pairing (we need Pearce or St Ledger, both been linked though). He needs to use Hyam more in my opinion, get another winger (Coppinger has been linked) and sign a target man in the Ricardo Fuller mould. I think Joel Ward (if he signs) would add competition in a few of these departments, and push Carlos for his position.

I think we are on cut backs all round and we will find it difficult to sign players therefore another season of loans will happen if we are not able to compete with wage offers or will not offer players stability with longer term deals we cannot blame them when they sign for other clubs. We have wasted money on older players and the well is drying up - the answer is more bums on seats = more money to offer but how many now are willing or able to commit to spending the money on what many call 'mediocre' footy a vicious circle that won't be broken

@johnwarkstash, spot on.
This is not the 1970's and I feel there are too many people who expect us to be up there just because of that period we had under Sir Bobby. The other thing that they expect is for our youth system to constantly develop new players like we did back then and the truth is our youth system hasn't been a conveyor belt of success in over 20 years so I'm not sure on which planet some of our fans live.
I am not happy with the mediocrity, but just like Johnny Lyall inherrited John Duncans mess, PJ has taken on Keanes and it's not going to be corrected overnight. Having said that, hopefully PJ will bring in the 'right' players this summer and we'll see some improvement, but improvement next season is what we need to see, however it's all relative. It's starting to look like the club is wanting to try the shoestring budget route and if no (or not much) money is invested in either transfer fees or wages during the summer to expect us to be able to compete with those who have come down and the bigger sides already here will be unrealistic anyway.

Yep, he's still the right man for the job. What if we won all our matches, we'd be promoted now, you cant argue with that.

Jewell, was given a brief he tried to use experience to for fill this brief it failed he realised this and immediately started to work with the younger players to get better results which he has ..... he just needs to back them up with 4 great quality players hungry to play for the club

Oh and he has made the mess worse and added more average and in some cases worse players.

if jewells the right man then you need to give him what he needs to succeed mr clegg.i'm still not happy with the signings we made over the last summer with the money we got from the wickham transfer. for me,if going out of your way to get the players who could actually get us playing better as a team and spending a bit over the odds to get them and make one or two less signings of players who we might not see play all season thats fine by me.we wasted the opportunity to bring in a couple of good players.if they help you get into the mix at the end of the season then no ones griping about the wages they may be on.we will not have that opportunity to splash again for god knows how long.i think we need a striker like ricardo fuller.if he had been available last season with the money we had i personally would have gone out of my way to get him, this season we are going to have to scrap more for of these kind of players to come here because we wont have the clout we had last year,i hate to say it but it looks like another mid table season for us.

RegencyBlue added 16:45 - May 3
My guess is that he will still be the right man until about December when it becomes clear we are in for another lower mid-table finish, if we're lucky!

After that who knows! Evans and Cleggs record for appointing managers here is appalling and unless they take better advice than they have obviously taken until now I fear for the future of our once great club.

How has Jewell made the mess worse by saving us from Keanes doomed relegation season ?
Ridding us of the majority of overpriced overpaid crap he signed Healy,Fulop,Murphy,Priskin,Leadbitter.
Improving players Keane had written off Edwards,Martin,Smith and Scotland
Signing a lot cheaper, better, younger players Jet,Cresswell,Drury,Chopra , Stevenson.
Whilst having the centre of his team ripped apart last summer due to no fault of his own and Keane upsetting Mac and Norris and Wickham for financial reasons .
And the football is a lot more entertaining and we are certainly seeing more goals and wins .
Keane produced the dullest football i have ever seen at Portman Road even worse than Duncan , went 15 games without a win ,sold off our youth Trotter,Garvan,Rhodes and isolated individuals Wright,Delaney,Mac ,but worst of all made Bruce the club captain ,truly shocking

Dozzells Bobblehat thanks for the answer to my question I do not rant about Jewell I simply do not like the way he managers Ipswich.
My first point is he will not move to Ipswich so I believe he has no intention of staying here I dont know of many managers do not live 300 miles away.
Secondly managers do not get years to build sides its a sign of the times Im afraid.
Thirdly hes had 15 months to build a side and apart from Cresswell and to a lesser extent Drury,Chopra and Thomas who have yet to prove themselves in my opinion thats it.
Next his man management is awful the way he comes out and blaming players is not the way I feel a team manager to act.
I am not of the opinion his ideas on youth is right they can not be judged on training alone they have to be given a run in the team Josh Carson is one of my examples played one game and was poor then dropped never seen again this is no good for his development he is just one example Hyam another.
I hope you see why I can not accept that Jewell is the right man .
0

buryblue77 added 17:03 - May 3
@righty, how can you justify giving a player a place without judging his ability in training. I bet you'd be the first to moan if he tried players in a game in which we lost because of the 'young, untried' player messing up.
Josh Carson apparently likes going out on the pi$$ in Ipswich, rowing with his girlfriend after having had a few. Acceptable maybe in the booze fuelled 70's, not today.

righty added 17:30 - May 3
Seems like you know what you are talking about what about Bullard and Chopra then and I also said Luke Hyam I suppose he was out getting drunk as well.
And as for training why did he play Carson in the first place.
If thats all you can say in defence of Jewell then I think I have made my point.
