Jewell: Some Positives to Be Taken From Season
Jewell: Some Positives to Be Taken From Season
Thursday, 3rd May 2012 17:27

Blues boss Paul Jewell says there are some positives to be taken from the 2011/12 campaign, despite the Blues finishing 15th in the Championship.

Asked what he could take out of what he admits has been a disappointing season overall, Jewell said: “I think the way we’ve finished since the turn of the year, since we played West Ham. We’ve played some really good football at times.

“And some of the signings. Not all your signings are going to work out, but Cressy’s been terrific and I think Emmanuel-Thomas is starting to show the potential we knew he had.

“He’s probably a match-winner we haven’t had, certainly since I’ve been here, but he knows he’s got to get better, and he will.”

He says some of the players who were already at the club have progressed as well: “Lee Martin’s improved. I think Carlos Edwards, even at the ripe old age of 33 just seems to be getting better and better.

“I think there’s a bit of a togetherness about them, which probably wasn’t prevalent enough at the start of that bad run we were having.

“But we know that we need to improve, that’s me, that’s the staff and that’s the players. Everyone needs to improve for next season.”

Very poor season, nothing else Jewell can say will convince most of us otherwise.

@ alanmahon2011

apart from ellington they were signed for no fee and year contracts to help our younger players out. we were never going to keep all of them beyond the year. bowyer was offered deal but more of a coaching role.

Lightningboy - re Adam clayton - no idea - Leeds supporters I know can't understand it- came second in their player of the years awards and achieved high rating per game- could do a job here - but appreciate its not initially what we need i.e gk cb etc

Financial constraints mean a lot of teams are cutting back. Expect these sort of cuts by numerous teams over the next four weeks. Reading releasing 14, Leeds ten, couple of others already saying they'll do the same. Its gonna be a busy closed season. Wonder how many of these players will have to drop down leagues to find work. . . . .

Re clayton - I expect Warnock's clearing the path for an old Stalwart like Derry to come into the side. Also, why are these Pearce and Ward deals taking so long with Pompey!? He should have signed for Leeds by now and Eatds minor op shouldn't hinder the transaction!!

Why are so many dismissing Chopra as a poor signing ? He has had issues but still finished with more goals than any other Town player since 2006 and that was Alan Lee and before that back to 2004 with Bent and Kuqi .
For a first season at a new club i would consider this a success and more will follow .
We have scored as many a the champions ,scoring is not an issue we need to be stronger at the back and if Jewells targets of Pearce and St Ledger had come in then who knows ?
It is all far too black clouds outlook on this website

This time last year we needed a SPINE in the team. We now need a SPINE in the team. Goalie, Big centre half (leader if poss) Big Centre foward. Please PJ and SC at least learn from your mistakes! go out and get the players we need.

Positives?

We didnt sign Ched Evans. (Dodged that bullet!)

Chopra can do a full vehicle service for a 20% discount whilst the rest of the team can wash and Valet it.

Match day pies are good.

We're not Norwich supporters.

Lifes good! What more do you want.

Chopra didn't score the 20 goals he said he would and contributes little else and his off the field wranglings hasn't helped, end of...

AlanMahon, are you saying those players are all good and should be retained? Not sure anyone else is complaining about them being let go...

Would agree there are some positives in all fairness, he did inherit an appalling squad from Keane. Just a shame most of the short termist gambles didn't work out, I was generally supportive at the time they came in as I think lots were. Two new centre-backs and a proper no.1 for next year and there might be more to be positive about.
