Town Linked With Gerrard Move
Town Linked With Gerrard Move
Sunday, 13th May 2012 10:30

Town and Leicester City are reported to be ready to offer Cardiff City £350,000 for central defender Anthony Gerrard. Elsewhere in today’s tabloids, the Blues are again mentioned in connection with Peterborough midfielder George Boyd.

Gerrard, 26, is set to leave the Welsh club after apparently falling out of favour with manager Malky Mackay. The cousin of Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, he came through the ranks at Everton and while with the Toffeemen spent time on loan with Accrington Stanley and Walsall before joining the Saddlers on a permanent basis in May 2005.

Four years later, the 6ft 2in tall defender moved to Cardiff for a fee believed to be in the region of £200,000.

Liverpool-born Gerrard spent the whole of 2010/11 on loan at Hull City before returning to the Bluebirds for the 2011/12 campaign.

The former Republic of Ireland U18 international came on as an injury time sub in this year’s Carling Cup final and missed the decisive spotkick during the penalty shoot-out, his cousin having already missed for Liverpool, who took the trophy.

Gerrard made 22 starts and three sub appearances for Cardiff during 2011/12, scoring two goals.

Meanwhile, the Blues, Burnley, Middlesbrough and Derby are all reported to be showing interest in Posh midfielder Boyd, who is up for sale having refused to sign an extension to his contract which has a year to run.

Peterborough are said to have put a price of more than £1 million on the 26-year-old former Stevenage man.

In April, Blues boss Paul Jewell played down the chances of Town signing either Boyd or team-mate Paul Taylor.

Would it be quicker to post the players we are NOT linked with.

Hmm...sounds a bit of a fringe player. He signed for them for £200K and made 60 appearances for Cardiff in three seasons. Should be inexpensive I guess, but I don't see anything to indicate he would be good enough to come into our defence to bolster a promotion bid.

Not sure about gerrard but boyd would be a great player for us.
We don't seem to be after a good centre back at the moment.
The likes of gerrard, keogh players like that could be hit or miss.
I suppose it's hard to get the right players in at a certain price.
We will see!!!!

2012-2013 campaign starts this august phil! Dont know if gerrard is the answer. So far keogh sounds the best to me, but then we need a back up rcb!

Gerrard looked useful in the cup final (apart from the penalty miss of course) I know there's a long way to go until the new season starts, but it would be nice to see a signing or two this month...

I hate this part of the season, being linked with every man and his dog!

No thanks . Just because he has the name Gerrard does not mean he will have quality. At 26 and still a fringe player at Hull or Cardiff suggests "not good enough" to me!

Keogh and Gerard. Not the first two on any of our lists given how many goals we leaked last season! Can they do a job? No doubt! Do these links excite me? No.

On another note, who do we think should be skipper next season? Keep Edwards or give it to a new signing, an actual leader. PJ claims it doesn't matter who's skipper, it's not important but it is. Any thoughts? No one really stands out for me so it would have to be a new signing. If Bullard could sort himself out I'd be up for him skippering if it gave him the extra added impetus to boss games ala Stevie G which he clearly has the ability to do at this level week in week out.

edwards for skipper for me keanish, think its made him a better player, that and playing at right back. he is now aware of his responsibilities and is arguably our most commited player. agreed he has his issues as a defender but he brins so much to the side; consistency, effort, attacking flair and not a bad championship defender to boot. there is a question over whether we would be better off with a general type, barking orders to those around him but i dont think this requires the armband. how often do we hear sportsmen talking of having 11 captains on the pitch? maybe this is why we are looking at the likes of gerrard and keogh, decent, experienced players to pull others into line, whilst edwards leads by example? as for bullard, i still think he can be an important player for us but think he has shown he will always be a bit of a wildcard. capable of playing great football but too often in the spotlight for his tomfoolery rather then his skills on the pitch. we all love bullard but he's so frustrating, somewhere between his unfortunate injuries and his apparent lack of focus is a very talented player but he's far too unreliable to hold down a starting place, week in, week out, let alone be captain.

Not that familiar with Gerrard ... may be okay. However Boyd would be a great signing and a big boost - the type of signing that would let others know we are back in business.

Gerrard would be a solid back up defender & not bad for 200-300k. Delaney and Smith would be better IMO.
Richie Keogh is far superior though and could galvanize our defense.
Tbh both be be good additions, young and enthueastic. Keogh as a first teamer and Gerrard as back up.
As for captain, thats a tough one. We have very little in terms of leader types. Has to be Edwards for me. Scotland seems to be a popular in the squad but not guarenteed a regular start.

Boyd for little over a £1million would be an insane bargain. Could be this summer's JET IF that were to happen

Gerrard would be good, but (we say it time and time again) what we really really need is a natural leader at the back down here. I would prefer Keogh over Gerrard but they are both very "solid" Championship defenders at reasonably young ages,

Taylor15: That team would be great. But somehow, I doubt we'll get even half of them!!
