Town and Cardiff Sound Out Ex-Posh Keeper
Town and Cardiff Sound Out Ex-Posh Keeper
Sunday, 13th May 2012 22:11

TWTD understands that Town and Cardiff City have both spoken to ex-Peterborough keeper Joe Lewis since his release by the London Road club. The Bluebirds have so far shown the more serious interest in the former England U21 international, who began his career at Norwich City.

The 24-year-old is leaving Posh this summer having fallen out of favour during 2011/12 following a six-month spell on the sidelines after breaking a kneecap in last year’s League One play-offs.

Lewis is familiar to members of the coaching staff at both Town and Cardiff. Prior to his January 2008 £400,000 move to Peterborough, the 6ft 6in tall keeper came through the ranks at Norwich where he worked with Blues goalkeeper-coach Malcolm Webster and Town Academy manager Sammy Morgan.

Amongst the current Cardiff staff, Lewis also worked with keeper-coach James Hollman, who coincidentally held the same position at Portman Road until last summer, and was a youngster with the Canaries during manager Malky Mackay’s time as a player in Norfolk. Current Bluebirds first choice keeper David Marshall was a team-mate at Carrow Road.

In addition to his five U21 caps, Lewis has played for England at U16, U17 and U19 levels and was called up to the full squad in 2008 for friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago and the USA, while he spent spells on loan at Stockport and Morecambe when with the Canaries. During his 190 games for Posh, he helped them to two promotions from League One and one from League Two.

Manchester United’s Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak is understood to be top of Blues boss Paul Jewell’s list of potential new number ones, but with several other higher profile clubs in Germany and England also interested is likely to have to look at alternative options.

Birmingham’s Colin Doyle has also been linked but with sources close to Portman Road playing down the Blues’ interest.

Just read this lot. For crying out loud this article is about something we desperately need - a goalie! Something like a fifty/fifty split for/against but the bulk of the posts (purely down to ITFC1981) are on a different topic. As I write this, right in front of my eyes, it says: "Please keep News Comments on topic. To make wider points, visit the TWTD Forum. Do not post bad language or libellous content." COYB

bluey123 & itfc 1981, u really havent got a clue. the only person who decides if a player isw to be sold, other than for financial reasons, which rhodes was not, is the manager. if keane had said he didnt want to sell hi m hed still be here. u clearly didnt see the rhodes interview on football focus last week. as for lewis, sorry, and this has nothing to do with him being a former canary, the guy is rubbish. why else was he left out for half a season by posh, and has now been released. we should let cardiff have him & sign heaton. hes a much better bet.

What are Simon Clegg's business credentials?

In 4 years he has been here, he has only demonstrated a basic grasp of "Marketing for Dummies"

Has his knee cap break had anything to do with his loss or dip of form!? Seems like if he was very highly rated and swept the board with awards, plus has a whole joust of England under 16's - 21 caps he must have something about him!

Given he's a free I'd like to think form is temporary and class is permanent and at a total cost of nothing he way just need a fresh start!

Take the point about being an ex-canary. Things could turn very ugly very quickly ala Andy Marshall!

Clegg has his faults but much of the criticism he receives on this forum is harsh. I'm quite glad he is ensuring the club is run on a sound financial basis, and not driving us towards financial oblivion (Portsmouth style!)

Well we are in 60 million plus debt (who ever we owe it to) and that seems very Portsmouth to me! and when Evans realises that two bob signings wont gain promotion he will call his debt and that will be very very Portsmouth.

Again, not very optimistic, but Lewis would be a decent keeper. The Birmingham keeper is better IMO though. In recent years Lewis has certainly made a number of mistakes and hasn't been as good - but still better than what we have got currently (i.e. ALB!).

well said bill blue. trouble is that itfc1981 isnt interested in commenting on the topic, only in turning it into an excuse to slag off clegg. trouble is others need to answer him so the messages co off topic from every1 else too. just to try to shut him up as much as nething else. what i will just say to those of you who have once again turned this into the rhodes departure debate tho, is this. yes, hes been superb for huddersfield in league 1. but only once hes played at a higher level will we know if this decision was as big a mistake as you all assuming it is. he may totally flop at this or premiership standard where the defending generally much better than in lge 1. not saying he will, just ill reserve judgement

...... sounds about right - not good enough for Peterborough, but good enough for us. Good indication of the level we now operate at.
Some of you people are as bad as Clegg and Jewell - interested in anyone who would remotely consider coming to the Club.
My word - How things have changed ?? - most definately NOT for the better.

johnwalkstash - no chance of any 'gems' - we are no longer a 'gem' attracting Club.

Born out by the fact even 'young potential gems' - don't want to stay here, i.e recent exits.

I think some fans, don"t need to call you out, you will figure it out as will everyone else...need to understand that a football club is a BUSINESS....like any BUSINESS they have a pay structure that they work to and cost outlay that works for the budget....so if a team selling or a playing moving does not fit into that cost structure then you do them sign them for what is right for the COMPANY not the FANS....when you but a few million quid into it you run it how you want...as for now I am going to let a successful millionaire run it how he deems to make the books balance.

h32- I would respectfully suggest that the signings of Cresswell and JET would prove that we can still attract "gems".

how can we have kuscazk aa number1 keeper target and we can't afford to go for ward, pearce, coppinger, gerrard, keogh....

walberswick. where u get it that we cant afford to go for these players/ weve already talked to ward for 1 thing. pj has said he isnt likely to try to get coppinger as he not think he likely to come this time. we are showing interest in both keogh & gerrard(according to the press at least). the only reason we didnt go in for pearce after the season ended was that hed already agreed to sign for leeds. so ur post rather uninformed i think. if however ive misread ur post & u actually saying that if we signed kusczak we couldnt afford the other players we want, how do you or ne1 else(including me) know that. no1 knows exactly how much money jewell has to spend. so why doesnt every1 just wait & see what happens

Rather a mixed reaction on here to Lewis, I'd rather have Kuzak or Westwood personally.
@britanniaman - know exactly what you mean about fullop's display yesterday - some of the mistakes he made looked dreadful, I wonder if he was bunged? with all the money at stake nothing would surprise me and the Man City v QPR game looked suspect!

Perhaps our goalkeeping coach could be approached about his opinion on prospective signings?. He has been in the game long enough and has probably coached most?

Lewis is rubbish!!! Paul Jones has not signed a new deal at Posh at would be the better option!
