Town Renew Klug Interest
Town Renew Klug Interest
Thursday, 31st May 2012 15:07

TWTD understands that Town have renewed their interest in bringing former Academy manager Bryan Klug back to Playford Road as exiting chief Sammy Morgan’s replacement. In February, we revealed that the Blues had approached the 51-year-old about a possible return, Klug at that point deciding against leaving his current role as assistant director and head of player development at Tottenham’s Academy.

More recently Klug is believed to have softened to the idea of going back to the job he vacated in 2006 to become Jim Magilton’s assistant manager.

Klug was Magilton’s second in command until John Gorman’s appointment in 2008, when he moved into a head of football development role and was taking charge of the reserves when he was controversially axed by former boss Roy Keane in January 2010.

Current Academy manager Morgan yesterday announced his intention to stand down at the end of the month, with the Academy undergoing a restructuring as part of the EPPP shake-up of youth football. Town’s decision to opt for Category Two will see overall staff numbers increase by up to eight.

Asked to comment on Town's targeting of Klug in February, chief executive Simon Clegg wouldn't comment one way or the other: “It would be wrong for me to speculate on any member of staff, past or present.”

Klug, who still lives in Suffolk, was a youth player with the Blues between 1977 and 1983 but failed to make a senior appearance, moving on to Wimbledon (loan), Chesterfield and Peterborough United and then into non-league football.

He returned to Portman Road in 1987, joining the coaching staff and in 1998 became the director of the newly formed Academy in an era during which Kieron Dyer, Richard Wright, James Scowcroft, Titus Bramble and others emerged.

In 2005 Klug, who has also had spells as caretaker-manager of the Blues, led the Academy to the club’s third FA Youth Cup before becoming Magilton’s assistant a year later, shortly after Newcastle United had approached him to run their Academy.

I do not know why you all blame Keane for everything he made mistakes but he did not let Fulop,MCauley,Norris and Leadbitter walk away from the club for nothing costing the club nearly £7 m.
He did not produce a side that lost 7-1 at Peterborough or disband the reserves so the players not in the side could play competitive games.
He did not bring 13 players into the club with only 4 were playing at the end of the season so dont blame him for everything Jewell and Clegg should leave now they are destroying the club

@ Mark and cookie, Edwards is toss, and to think if we had not made him captain probs would have been promoted lol he had been class this year and has had good spells in the past
@bluey, ok so PJ who is the only manager since ME has been here to make a profit in a year, buy three very good young prospects (JET, cressy, and hewitt) had avoided us from relegation (1st season) and managed to start to form a recovery in good football played! what stuff have you been smoking??

Would be great to get him back involved with the academy, that's where his strengths lie

It is interesting to see the name of players coming through the ranks were all local talent Dyer, Bramble, Wright from Ipswich and Scowcroft from Stanton - Suffolk non league football has an excellent record with the likes of Lowestoft, Leiston , Bury, Sudbury etc so why do we not get hold of this talent on our doorstep anymore?

Bryan Klug, ITFC manager December 2012.

I'd be happy if that's the last signing we make between now and when Jewell leaves in December.

I got excited the last time the story broke, let's hope there's some substance to it this time.

Really hope this is true, if we can persuade Klug to come back it would be fantastic for the club. I know some of PJ's actions question his attitude to giving youth a go but he must have a say in who is appointed and so this gives me hope for the future.

BLUEY123

I know what you are saying but Keane did allow most of the player contracts run down without addressing the situation. PJ inherited a mess of a squad & a demotivated one at that. Its a domino effect that led to the terrible start to last season!
He had very little choice but to bulk up the numbers as best he could. I agree he could have targeted younger players but he decided to go with mainly experience players, and I can understand why.

Back on topic, come back Brian Klug!! We miss you... I'll give you my last rolo if u return!

Im sorry but Keane had no input in contracts at Ipswich so he was not to blame Simon Clegg was handling contracts and this is the reason we did not sign Derry he then went to QPR they were promoted says it all.
Jewell used most of Keanes signings last season only Cresswell,Jet,Chopra and Drury were not brought in by Keane .
Keane also gave youth a chance .
I was in no way a Keane fan and was glad he left but I think it would be great for people stopped blaming everyone else for there failings Jewell OUT

Yes, Yes, and Yes. The man is an ITFC legend just as much as some of our former great players.

As much as I would like to see Klug return to the Club - I would think he would have enough about him not to do so, after being treated the way he was when he left.
The fact that Sammy has left would have some effect on any decision too.
Different Manager yes - but same Club, and little (if anything) other than the date has changed.

Why would you join a club with a Cat 2 academy?
