The Football League has announced that the League Cup will be known as the Capital One Cup for the next four seasons. The Blues get their 2012/13 campaign under way with a first round tie in the week commencing August 13th.

Football League chief commercial officer Richard Heaselgrave said: "I am absolutely delighted to welcome Capital One to working with The Football League, our clubs and those of the Premier League.

“They're a hugely respected company that really impressed us with a passion and excitement for the competition so we can't wait to build a successful, innovative partnership over the next four seasons.

"The Capital One Cup is in great shape having been reinvigorated in recent seasons by a number of memorable finals, some thrilling midweek cup football and a first glimpse of the stars of the future."

Brian Cole, chief executive of Capital One UK, added: "We are very excited about getting behind the Capital One Cup and working with The Football League, the clubs, the players and the fans to build something amazing.

"The Capital One Cup gives clubs, big and small, a chance to compete on the national footballing stage and we look forward to introducing ourselves to millions of football fans across the country."

The first round draw will be released on Thursday 14th June with next season's Championship fixtures out the following Monday.

All Championship, League One and League Two sides will be involved in the first round except Bolton and Blackburn who as last season’s highest-placed clubs, get a bye to the second.

Next season’s final takes place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 14th February, 2013.

This competition needs to be quietly put down : it has been an irrelevance for years. Dodgy sponsorship simply highlights this fact. Get rid.

Would you credit it lol This will be the first tie ever Capital One will be linked with zero interest. Why when the football league are trying to show financial restraint do they go to the biggest financial con men

This cup has been ridiculed by the big clubs, it should become the Football League cup, thus excluding the Premier League teams from the competition. The lower League teams have their trophy they can play for, Championship teams don't have the same luxury, occasionally one of us might make it to the League Cup final (or even FA cup) but inevitably it will be won by the Premier League team.
Make it a competition for all but the Premier League Teams then maybe it will be taken more seriously because fans of teams like ours will see it as a real opportunity to win a trophy.

Hope PJ gives this competition the elbow like last year, so we can concentrate on the league.

It's a lame way to try to associate the cup with a high interest rate.
