Sir Alf Stand Gets a Spruce Up
Sir Alf Stand Gets a Spruce Up
Monday, 18th Jun 2012 21:58

Work started on cleaning and painting the superstructure of the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand at Portman Road earlier today.

It’s the first maintenance of this type since the new upper tier was built on to the old Churchman’s Stand during 2000 and 2001 and is costing the club around £80,000.

Glad they're fixing up the Sir Alf though. I sit there and the roof leaks, which is nice.

Really chuffed with this news....I have moved from the Brittania back to the SBR for this coming season (as now my kids don't want to come anymore )and what a timely move it was it seems, I can sit back in my warm comfortable seat and feast my eyes on the splendour of a gleaming Sir Alf Ramsey stand......there has been some talk on here about the tarps at the back of the SBR ....couldnt they be replaced with blue ones instead of the current vomit inducing Norwich yellow? or maybe Cleggy could get out his turnstile brush and paint them blue???

How about replacing the grotty, holey, norwich yellow tarpaulins at the back of the north stand? They've been there since the stand was built and they weren't even new then.

Should have made Bullard and Chopra do it earlier in the season as penance for their crimes - bit of community service and JB wasnt doing anything anyway other than watching TV.

Could do with a bit of Hammerite on those supports too I've noticed from the pics. Dont want that stand colapsing like the Radiohead concert stand.

Is that Tommy Smith doing the jetwashing? - The kid's getting stuck in everywhere this year!

Is the same planned for the SBR stand? I always cringe at the algae on the roof as I walk down, smart stand otherwise

Naa - you're right, it's shocking. More proof that a large number of the 'experts' on here couldn't find their way to PR if they tried.

To clear this up.... the photo was taken from the carpark on Portman Road. It is a side on shot of the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand which obviously joins onto the cobbold stand. Hence why you can see part of the Cobbold stand in the shot!

Im glad to see maintenance is being carried out! It was looking a little grubby. But as has been said above, its the cobbold stand that needs the sprucing up! Those windows all along the side are covered in bubbled up tinting film and look hideous! Along with the old ITFC canopies which are old and smeared with green as they have been there so long!! Wouldnt take a few quid to re-tint the windows and replace those canopies!

I like the humour on here, made me chuckle.

SirBobby's stand also needs the same (as does the Cobbold) It's almost a crime to have these stands named after such great Ipswich names and let them go to sh1t. I know it all costs money, so if The Sir Alf is costing £80k, then The Sir Bobby will cost about the same. £200k for the Cobbold on the basis it probably needs more work doing, so £360k in total, an awful lot of money, but if you're not spending your money on big signings please put your hand in your pocket for something Mr. Evans.

It's perfectly simple:

West = Pioneer Stand => Brittania Stand (or the "new" stand as my mum calls it)
North = North Stand => Sir Bobby Robson Stand (confusingly on Sir Alf Ramsey Way)
East = Portman Stand => Cobbold Stand (on Portman Road)
South = Churchman's Stand => South Stand => Sir Alf Ramsey Stand (confusingly not on Sir Alf Ramsey Way and still referred to as South Stand on ITFC website)

@ kev_b20 My feeling is that the club is trying to spend as little as possible on the Cobbold Stand pending demolition and replacement at some point in the not-too-distant future. The worse it looks, the easier it will be to get planning permission.

Right, clear this up once and for all!

These are pictures taken by me nan from her bedroom through her zoom lens whilst eyballing some young scallywag from one of those Diet Coke adverts taking his shirt off while he does his community service in his wet t-shirt. She says she didnt even know or care which side of Portman Road it was as she fainted shortly after from all the over excitement!

Are they going to be using the same long-life paint that's just been applied to the Forth Rail Bridge? Is it still going to be white?

Ah, colour. It took 40 posts before someone asked what colour it was going to be! Way to go @fatboy!

Painted Turnstiles, Cleaned Stand, Sir Bobby been shown some respect at last - NOW HOW ABOUT SIGNING SOME PLAYERS ?? - the need to do so has not mysteriously dissapeared, or gone away - Jewell, Clegg & Co.

Or had you just forgotten that miniscule, obviously non important fact ??

The tarpaulins in the SBR cover up some air vents to improve the air flow to the pitch. Not entirely sure why they are actually there, i think it was a health and safety thing. Reason no one has ever seen these vents is because they arnt allowed to be open on a match day.
