Britannia Stand Co-opted Tuesday, 10th Jul 2012 06:00
Portman Road’s Britannia Stand will be known as the East of England Co-operative Stand from the 2012/13 season after the Blues secured a new sponsorship deal.
Speaking to TWTD in September, chief executive Simon Clegg anticipated developments on stand sponsorship during the months to come: “I expect to be making some progress on stand sponsorship this season.
“There are a couple of people who want to speak to me but we haven’t talked [in detail] yet.”
Building society Britannia, who had sponsored what was initially known as the Pioneer Stand since 1999, will remain involved in the club working at grassroots level.

What's the problem? More sponsorship, from a community store. If you want to call it Britannia still, no-one is stopping you. Its not like Norwich union, Collmans or a French horse Butchery is sponsoring the stand! Saying that i wouldn't mind Greene king or Adnams sponsoring us in some way.

The Co-op have taken over Britannia, so it was only natural that the stand would need to be renamed. The Co-op is a good mutual organisation run for its members, not shareholders, and they have an excellent ethical policy. I am pleased to have them associated with the ground. We are very lucky...the stadium is called Portman Road, and the other three stands are the Cobbold Stand, the Sir Alf Ramsay Stand, and the Sir Bobby Robson stand. We cannot accuse the club of chasing the fast buck here and they are respecting our traditions. Good on them.

I think this is a great idea, local company who sell decent food at sensible prices. Perhaps they ought to be invited to run refreshment outlets at the ground then we could benefit from reasonable prices and quality products.

Could be worse, we could have had a sloshed Clegg on countless tv adverts showing the nation how to boil an egg and looking a right tart!

Why don't we just rename the whole ground. The morrisons ground would fit quite nicely and the cobbold stand could be renamed the asda stand. Just saying :)

Good god people, we do have the moans today. This funny name means only one thing, more money coming in to the club, meaning investment into the team. I say well done Cleggy!

bluelady - agree with your comments about the ethics of the Co-op, and their sponsorship is obviously most welcome - but the name is certainly a mouthful for a stand. Obviously it will be termed as The Co-op Stand by everyone. I'm sure some name refinement could have been negotiated, but after all it was Clegg's doing - so what more can we expect really ? It is indeed pleasing to know that a company is still interested in Sponsoring the Club - to whatever level, and should be appreciated accordingly.
