Blues in Heskey Talks
Blues in Heskey Talks
Friday, 20th Jul 2012 10:50

Town are in talks with former England international Emile Heskey. The 34-year-old is out of contract having left Aston Villa earlier in the summer.

A national newspaper broke the news of the Blues' interest in the veteran striker earlier today, with TWTD sources more locally backing up the report.

Last night, Blues boss Paul Jewell revealed that Town are close to making their fourth signing of the summer with a big frontman in the Heskey mould very much amongst his targets.

Heskey started his career with Leicester City before moving on to Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan and then finally Villa.

Jewell previously signed 6ft 2in tall Heskey whilst at Wigan during the summer of 2006.

Poll: In favour of Emile Heskey joining the Blues?

I forgot to add his wages would be higher than the majority of the squad, he's played the majority of his career in the premiership, god knows how but he has.

My stance is that i would welcome here as a good signing at this level but think there are better acquisitions out there that may complement the squad better. My point was that i can't understand why Heskey gets such bad press and i don't understand why lots of people on here wouldn't want such an experience player at the club!?

You don't win 62 caps and score 40 goals for Liverpool and be a crap player. Plenty of poor international selections have happened in the past, Palmer and Thomas being too perfect examples but they never sustained a place in the squad. 62 is a lot of caps for a rubbish player and so what if the managers didn't live up to expectation, he was still there on merit for his goalscoring returns and ability as he offers something different to most.

Well this has certainly split opinion hasnt it, and to be honest im not sure.
If he came i would hope only on a pay as you play basis as he is injury prone, but i can see him causing problems in this league , but then again i thought Bowyer would stand out in this league so what do i know.
Those saying he has always been rubbish....IMO you are talking it, i have always rated him. He is the sort of player who other players love having in their side, ask any striker who has played with him, they all sing his praises. He makes space for other players and i can remember a one all draw at PR in the Prem when he was absolutely unplayable.
He is obviously not a long term solution but i agree with PJ that this is the type of striker we need to compliment Chopra/Scotland.

Couldn't be more undecided about this. Very good arguments for yes, and very good arguments for no.

No thanks. No doubt he'd be on substantial wages. The money would be better spent on a young, hungry striker instead.

A big striker who causes defences problems...? Get Wickham back on loan for the season? Surely a better shout that Heskey for a season.

That said I think he could offer us another option up top. All the managers who have signed him in the past must have seen something in him

There were lots of people wanting us to sign Murphy. Some of the quotes included that he was an outlet and we could lump the ball over to him on the left hand side, good in the air etc. In 32 games, he got 4 goals and 1 assist though.
I would back Heskey to do much better than that at championship level, so I'm not sure why so many people would back Murphy, but not Heskey.

so we are interested in 1 older player & all the whingers reappear in here. strange isnt it?where were you when loach & chambers signed? but to the facts. those of you suggesting hed be on substantial wages? no, hed have to fall into line with our pay structure the same as any other signing we make. for those questioning pjs comments about may not be able to have 3 keepers yet can pay heskeys wages(refer to previous point), the fact is for 1, whether it heskey or ne other striker for that matter, the point pj is making is that if we have 3 keepers on the books then we may have to forego signing 1 of the players we want as the wage budget would not allow for that. in other words we have a choice, either we sign all the palyers we want this season & have 2 keepers or we have 3 keepers & dont sign 1 of those we want. i for 1 think that for a 1 season deal he could do a good job for us. as long as he comes here because he wants to play, then i say go for it. may not score loads of goals but will cause defenders no end of problems allowing others to take advantage.

I for one am slightly undecided, but the more comments from other fans I read the more I think, for a year, why not give him a go! However, the one sticking point for me is where that would leave us regarding getting another striker in, namely Davies and Baldock. Personally I don't think there is enough room in the team for Heskey + another striker, and if push comes to shove, I think I'd rather have a younger striker for the long term future such as Davies and Baldock. But there you, we'll see. "In Jewell we trust".

How is it that some of the same posters on here who have slammed PJ/SC/ME, in previous stories, as useless because they will balls up making a signing, now seem to think they'll have ni trouble at any bringing in a forner England international who has been on big wages elsewhere?
A bit of fairness, consistency & logic would be great from time to time. Or else perhaps you could just trot out the same comment for every story, along the lines of "I am a negative person, I want to blame somebody for everything, irrespective of if there is fact or reason behind it. I don't like Paul Jewell or Simon Clegg so I'll never give them any credit for anything, but I will find some excuse to have a go at them at every opportunity. I am more to be pitied than taken seriously".
You know who you are.

Who says he would be on huge wages? He transformed England when he was brought into the team, anyone claiming differently is claiming black is white, and if you are going to judge a striker purely on the amount of goals he scores, then basically you have a very limited understanding of football

It depends on what you're brought into the team to do. If it's score goals, you SHOULD be judged on that and that alone. If it's to be a target man for someone else ie Owen, then be judged on that aspect of your game. Fact is, he's had his day. Last season at Villa was an ideal opportunity for him to reignite his career with Bent being injured. He failed to take it IMHO.
