Villa Linked With £3.5m Move for Cresswell
Villa Linked With £3.5m Move for Cresswell
Tuesday, 24th Jul 2012 23:05

Aston Villa are looking to sign Town left-back Aaron Cresswell for a fee of £3.5 million, according to reports. The 22-year-old was the Blues’ Player of the Year last season having signed from Tranmere last summer.

New Villa manager Paul Lambert is claimed to close to agreeing a fee with Town for the Liverpudlian and hopes to get the deal done within 24 hours.

In October, having impressed in his first couple of months at Portman Road, Cresswell extended his Town contract until June 2015 with the option of a further year.

Cresswell cost the Blues tribunal-set compensation of £240,000 rising to £520,000 based on appearances and promotion after he left Prenton Park at the end of his contract last summer.

Tranmere would be entitled 20% of Town's profit if and when the full-back is sold. In addition to the £240,000 initial fee, the tribunal awarded Rovers £45,000 after Cresswell makes 15, 30, 45 and 60 appearances for the Blues, plus a further £100,000 should Town reach the Premier League by the summer of 2014.

Cresswell has so far made 46 appearances for Town, scoring one goal, taking the fee Town have paid up to now to £375,000.

If we sold Cresswell, it'd be a big mistake! His a great player, with a bright future at the club. And Lee Martin at left back? PJ won't try that at all. If we sold Cresswell, which we won't, the only acceptable manner of replacing him would be through the transfer market. Whight isn't ready for first team action, with Town anyway, and we have no sustainable cover either.

Every player at any club has a price. If Villa or whoever come in with what the club think is a decent offer then they would be foolish not to consider it.

Cresswell is a good player - not the great player some on here keep banging on about. Lets be honest he did not have much competition for player of the year last season. The tea lady could have won it!

If Cresswell wants to go to Villa and the price is right then the club would be silly to stand in his way.

There is no such thing as loyalty with footballers. It is all about money and Cresswell will move on because it involves a very big pay rise - irrespective whether he warms the bench or not - because he is not good enough for the premiership just yet!

The worst kind of news that we all antisipated and dreaded. Three and a half million less payouts is nothing for a player of his quality and potential.
Didn't Paul Jewell say last week that the club had recieved no offers for players ? Then presumably the French guy's appearance should be viewed as coincidence ?

I dont want him to leave but getting 10x what we paid for him in one year is not a bad return and lets be honest he is not that good. Delaney can play LB as well as Wight.
BlueBadger, who are a class A muppet if you think Martin should play LB, whilst your at it lets put Bullard in goal as we all know he likes to hang round bars

Oh dear. It's a shame if the story is true because lets face it you would expect Cresswell to want to play in the prem and it would be very difficult to turn down a few million (or more if some of the local news is correct) profit on him so quickly. There is not really much we can do

For me Cresswell was the model Ipswich player and a rare highlight of last season. He worked hard and was keen to prove himself by stepping up and this year e even started pre-season training early to make sure he was ready. If he goes I want to see replacements of this standard young and hungry.

Not sure how Clegg and Jewell can be blamed for another club showing interest in one of our players! Of anything they showed great foresight renewing his contract already when he established himself in the team. Whatever the outcome I hope it's quick and avoids as much disruption to pre-season as possible.

Personally I wouldn't sell for £3.5m because the likelihood of finding a young gem for less than that would be tough or it means gambling on the lower leagues which can go either way and the money can soon be wasted. If I was lambert I wouldn't pay more, he is offering silly money for a fairly unproven quantity and villa aren't rolling in cash. If a player wants to go though....

"Loyal" Lambert had his eyes on Cresswell already before he jumped ship at Carrot Road. I really hope, for our sake and his, that Cresswell stays, but it's unlikely we won't get bids for some of our best young players, just at we are trying to do the same thing to clubs lower down the leagues. If he goes, the young French lad looked pretty handy at left back in Holland. We could do worse, although I see his performance against Braintree was only described as "tidy but not spectacular." I hope Cressie, who seems to be a sensible lad, will realise that there are many instances of young players who moved too early and didn't necessarily immediately advance their careers by doing so. Stick with ITFC for a year or two, and then see where we are!

Villa obviously looking for a young defensive back line, they've already signed Matt Lowton from Sheffield U. Hope that this is only paper talk, if they do make a bid it should be turned down straight away!!

If he did go (I hope not) it is a possible he could go down the same road as Wickham, way down the pecking order and still dropping because Martin o"Neil is still looking at strikers,, and we all rated Wicham highly ??
It is only my opinion any way hey ??????

If it is true, £3.5M is a lot to turn down for a club trying to be financially sustainable in tough economic times. It is roughtly the amount Jewell has spent on transfer fees in his entire time at ITFC! (remember we got £8M+ for Wickham during Jewell's time too)

Well Im really hoping this does not go through very backward step if it does his settled in very very well here and I see him a a big star of the game in future for us.
P Lambert must be thinking ill help the tractor boys out with an offer but Im afraid 3.5 M is poultry offer for this talent I wouldnt blame Cresweel if he stepped up to the challange of the Prem though his going places but I would hope he would take his time a bit.

sigh... if it's true I don't think we have a cat in hell's chance of keeping him. If not this season it would have been next so let's get it over with and move on quickly. Assuming it is true of course...

He's not going anywhere. He is loyal. For once. He bought his first house in the town and has a young family. Player of the season! I'm searching the bins for an earlier posters season ticket if he does go though. £6 million would buy us Gio (guffaw!)

we struggle to pursuade good players to join ITFC , we should be trying to hold the few we have if we are going to be seriously chasing promotion .Having money is ok for teams that attract players ,but its some time since we ''the team'' to join .Yes we'd get a good price but the money would be frittered away again on fading players or misfits .Look at the good players we have sold in the past and regretted it .Lambert move on please theres a good lad .COYB

Rremember we are a selling club the money will be more than handy, and you just can't stand in the way of the lad good luck to you Aaron.

Lets hope this is just 'paper talk'.
Really hope he stays but there is no way the club will turn this down if true. Just begining to think we would have a decentr defence this year with Chambers and Loach signed up...oh well
We could seriously struggle this season if he goes, championship will be stronger than ever.

Wouldn't like to lose cresswell but it would be easier to take if the money got put back into the squad. Unfortunately recent history suggests that wouldn't happen! We are & always will be a selling club.

blueandrew19 added 08:58 - Jul 25
I really hope this is not true, if it is, then it is an indication that we have become a selling club with little more ambition than yet another season of mid table struggle. I dont for one minute think he is the finished article but he is a player we found and one who seems to have rich promise for the club.

As has been said, the £3m we might end up with seems a lot until we have to go out again looking for a replacement.

As much as I don't want him to go £3.5m is a lot for him in my opinion.

hadleighboyblue added 09:15 - Jul 25
NO NO NO . If we are seriously building a team for the future , he is very much part of that . OK , if he continues to shine he will go eventually for more than this , but not yet .
Why can't the club just come out and say he's not for sale and kill this straight away , this could seriously affect our plans for the season and unsettle the player and the team and totally p**s off supporters just when our recent transfer dealings have looked positive.
