Chambers Surprised to Be Senior Man
Thursday, 16th Aug 2012 06:00

Luke Chambers admits he was surprised to find himself one of the elder statesmen of the Ipswich squad upon his arrival last month.

The former Nottingham Forest skipper is still only 26 and said: “It is strange in a way — and I was talking about this the other day — that I do seem a little bit older than most of the other boys.

“I’ve come in and found myself one of the senior players. I’ve played a lot of games in my career so it’s something that I might have to take on and try to help them as much as I can.

“But they are a very good group, all with good heads on their shoulders, and I don’t think they will need too many arms round them on the way. They are fully focused on the job in hand and they have the ability to go with the mindset.

“There are some very good players here. They feel they under-achieved last year and at the back of their minds as they go into the new season they are thinking they have a point to prove. They definitely want to improve on where they finished last season. The quality in the dressing room is of a very good standard and there’s no reason why we can’t go out and make an impact in the new season.”

Chambers is also pleasantly surprised that he has settled into his new surroundings so quickly after only checking in at Portman Road last month.

He added: “I feel I’ve been here a lot longer than just a few weeks and it’s been a good pre-season for us. Obviously the results during the early part weren’t what we wanted but we were working our way to the level we’re at now.

“The last few results have been decent but at the end of the day pre-season is about being fit for the first game of the season and that’s been our main aim all the way through. Performances have improved and we are very positive going into the new season.

“I wanted to settle in as quickly as possible. I’m not one to shy away from meeting new people. We sort of knew each other from playing against each other and it’s a fairly easy dressing room to settle into.

“I’ve really, really enjoyed the first few weeks. I owe a big thank-you to the rest of the lads for helping me to settle in so quickly. They have been first class and I’ve seen very quickly that we have a very good group of players here.”

Thanks for posting that Oldbri.

Not a whole lot of substance behind it though.
The fact is football is a business these days, every single owner of a club wants their club to do well and compete at highest level possible, in our case (and every other Champ club) to the Premier League with its mega bucks (benefits club and owner).

Im not accountant or tax expert by any means but Im sure what ever Marcus Evans is doing is ligimate (I hope so anyways). Evans is a football and ITFC fan. Dont forget David Sheepshanks helped negoaciate the terms to bring Evans on board. Following the nightmare of Administration he & club endured, Sheepshanks would only do whats best for the club.

Back on topic, glad to see Lukey Chambers has settled quickly and is getting on well with teh group. He will be a vital player for us for the next few seasons!!

Us town supporters have been crying out for youth to be given a chance, and tuesday night i was quite impressed with the boys. The movement and general passing game we played was very pleasing on the eye.Sure as PJ states we are short of 3/4 players to give us that little bit more experience, but hey i would rather he got the right ones permanent would be great otherwise loans will do..
Cant be there saturday (gutted) but as they say work comes first.Blackburn will be a tough opener but one we can win so get behind PJs BABY SQUAD it just might be a very interesting season.
I am now off to have my anual wager on town in a more confident mood than normal

Good to hear that Chambers is settling in at Town. He's right about us being a young squad and whilst that's going to present some challenges during the long season ahead hopefully it's a good sign for the future of our club.

Now that we have a permanent keeper I hope that our young backline (apart from Edwards but we do have Hewitt as the RB deputy waiting in the wings) can start building a good understanding together and have a good season ahead. However it's not going to be perfected overnight and so as fans we need to have some measure of patience.

Not everything will go according to plan in every game but hopefully the more games our backline get to play together the stronger they will become. We need to try and stick with the team and not jump down their throats with snide comments from the crowd the moment one slip is made. If we back the team with fantastic support hopefully we can help the team to gain a few points this season as the 12th man.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can keep hold of Cresswell hopefully we can keep the likes of Loach, Chambers, Cresswell, Smith and Edwards fit as much as possible throughout the season.

Can't wait for Saturday, COYB!

Seems that Chambers knows that he is good - and PJ has obviously praised him up and bigged up our "need" for him in order to get him to sign .... good man management with Luke - but beware others' noses aren't put out of joint ... If Tommy gets dropped again his confidence will plummet again ....

That said - Luke chambers is a MASSIVE signing for our club - and if he stays friends with everyone ... not only being right, but being right in the right way (read it again - it does make right good sense, right?) ... if he can do that they he IS the player to build round

BUT --- not a negative, but a widening of the issue .... Luke himself says it is not only about the back four ... and he is right. I have been VERY pleased to see Luke Hyam and the guy from Spurs playing in front of them - our "back 6" are very solid in front of Roach (who I am yet to see prove himslef ... had no opportunity against BR) and on Tuesday I had to pinch myself a few times when i saw Chops, Scotland and even JET getting back to defend so often.

This is looking SO MUCH BETTER than last year!

An interesting read, oldbri, even if the title sensationalises rather more than the article itself suggests. I am glad financial fair play has come in and it will be interesting to see how that affects the whole game. It is good that Sheepshanks and Evans appear to have the interests of the club at heart and it should be remembered there have been question marks over both. I don't see how Evans' desire to remain out of the public eye really increases these for some. At some point, for some reason, Evans will no longer be owner of the club. It is what happens then which is probably most critical but at least the impression is that he is in it for the long haul.
