Jewell: A Rude Awakening
Saturday, 25th Aug 2012 18:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell says his side’s 6-0 defeat at Blackpool was a rude awakening after their good start to the Championship season. The Town manager didn’t think anyone could have foreseen the eventual result during the first half.

Jewell said: “I don’t think that in the first 44 minutes you could see that coming. I thought we had as much of the ball as them. But we didn’t do an awful lot with it and we gifted them goals.

“The second goal came at a crucial time, right on half-time, and it meant it was going to be an uphill task in the second half. But once the third goal went in, we capitulated, I have to say.

“I think it’s a rude awakening,” he added. “I think the spirit in the squad is good, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s a test what happens out there.

“We played exceptionally well on Tuesday, battled away against Blackburn and in a week we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. That’s been our Achilles’ heel for a long time. On our day we’re good but when we’re not on our day...

“I wouldn’t say that it was one-way traffic in the first half today, we were definitely in the game but we didn’t do enough in their box and when it came in our box we just gave silly goals away.”

The Blues boss thought his side were particularly susceptible on the break: “They counter-attacked us all the time. It wasn’t as if they had bouts of pressure and were banging on the door and banging on the door.

“The sixth goal was a classic. We’re 5-0 down a we’ve got four players out the game with a minute to go. We lose it and they’re back at us.

“Counter-attacking’s hurt us badly today and when we’ve had the ball in situations, we haven’t done enough with it, and when the ball’s been turned over we’ve been exposed.”

Jewell had praise for the opposition: “They’re a good team. You can’t give teams like this goals like we did and expect to win matches.

“They’ve got a lot of flair players in their team, who work exceptionally hard and they’re a good team. But to lose 6-0 feels horrible.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway thought the result flattered his side: “This time of year you get the odd freak result, and I think that was one, to be perfectly blunt.

“I think to go in at half-time the reflection of the game was wrong. I didn’t think we deserved to have a two-goal lead. Our goalie made a brilliant save.

“I thought they got out too easy, I thought they passed it, they looked dangerous and it flattered us at half-time, to be perfectly honest.

“I went mad at half-time, I didn’t think we understood how to win the ball back, they had too much time on it. They caused my back four too many problems because the midfield didn’t get it right.

“In the second half I was delighted. I thought we were much better. And we needed to be. Goals change games, that’s what I keep talking about, and so far we’ve managed to get them a the right times, at vital times, in the early games.”

This is my first time writting a comment but feel the time has come to voice my opinion!! i have been a town fan all my life and attend as many home games as i can afford, the past few seasons my expectations have totally changed i used to expect us to be challanging for promotion and in most cases we were! when super Jim was in charge i liked the way we played and the players he got in, he just needed more time which he didnt get unlike Jewell who for some reason is given time and money! 7 game loosing streak last season how could he have kept his job??? but this seasons expectations....... im hoping for a mid table finish, and this is not just because of sats result, i just dont think we have the depth in our team! if we lose Chambers or Chopra thats it season and possible championship football gone!! Delany is awful at best and Smith is way too inconsistent! the only way forward in my opinion is to bring in a young hungry manager i wonder if Matty Holland would take the role??

Best hope is that the managemnet team stay in the north west and our team comes back for say Klug to sort out. I have followed this team since 1958 amd Jewell is the worst since Jackie Milburn.

watched the low lights on TV. Realise that Smith made a weak header for the first goal , but felt that Cresswell should have done better & avoided the goal Also thought he was at fault with the second goal. Hopefully this will put off Villa As he is one of our stars for the future but not in the league of Burley & Mills yet

had about 45 comments when we won, 155 comments for when we lose. Says it all about the fanbase of ITFC really! Some 'supporters' just love it when we fail. Quite depressing really.

I went to the match, but have only just gotten round to commenting. I expected some reaction on here, but not 16 pages!

An observation. I got to the match with about 30 mins to spare and watched the warm up - as did most other Town fans, didn't see too many arrive after me. Blackpool were drilling their players with short passes and games of keeping the ball in tight spaces. I looked over at Town and our drills were quite different. Lot more longer passing and not really much pressure.

On to the match. As Blackpool got into gear, especially in the second half, they looked way more comfortable under pressure and managed to connect a lot more of their passes, especially in tight spaces. They didn't look pressurised as they seemed to have confidence in each other. I think everyone who went will agree they are a very good team, who if kept together, will go back up this season.

Given the above, I didn't see it all as doom and gloom. I went to Burnley away last season and trust me it was a lot more depressing. At least we tried on Saturday.

My verdict on the players:
Luongo - outstanding. I wish he was a permanent signing and not a loan. Can't see Spurs letting him go easily.
Hyam - I'd love to see an Ipswich lad succeed, but he looked out of his depth on Sat against a good midfield. Hope it doesn't knock his confidence too much. I see he's got hamstring probs. Didn't see him struggle with it, so not sure that's an excuse. A bad day for a young lad. Hopefully he'll learn.
Smith - bad mistake for the first goal. I'm a Tommy Smith fan, but I worry he makes too many mistakes. Even though we shipped 4 in the second half he played well in the air.
Chambers - sloppy for second goal, but looks a solid CB to me.
JET - sorry, but every time I see him he looks like an expensive luxury in this division. For a big guy, he does little in the air and he loses possession too easily and doesn't track back. If Fulham really did offer £3m+ for him I;d bite their hand off!

To me our biggest problem was lack of confidence (from players of all ages) . We looked panicked all too often once Blackpool got on top. You could see it on the players' faces. I think signings won't sort the root issues in themselves. The coaching staff need to address some basic issues before we can progress. I'd rather they did that with young, hungry players either brought through or from the lower divisions, plus the odd gem from abroad - I was very impressed with Gomes on Sat. Sticking plaster loans aren't going to do it (and before anyone points out my contradiction re. Luongo, I'd happily have a permanent signing than a loan - preferably him because he was class!)
