Edwards: We're Playing to Keep Boss in Job
Wednesday, 10th Oct 2012 06:00

Ipswich captain Carlos Edwards has laid his cards firmly on the table to own up: “We are playing to keep the manager in his job.”

Successive away draws at Barnsley and Brighton may have ended a depressing run of three defeats on the trot but Town are still second from bottom of the table with Saturday’s defeat to Championship leaders Cardiff continuing speculation regarding Paul Jewell’s future.

Edwards admitted: “It’s all down to the players once we cross the white line and whatever team the manager picks we must go out and give 100 per cent.

“We can only do what we can when we are out on the pitch to help his cause and make the owner and the board of directors give him a bit of extra time. We can only do so much to try to make sure his job is safe.

“He will accept his fate and even if I would love to see him in the job for some time to come I am just one player.”

Edwards said the manager’s position is not proving a distraction and added: “It is not a big topic among the players and they tend to just get on with their jobs.

“We hear the whispers but the last thing we want to do is talk about whether or not the manager is going to be sacked. We don’t want players in a corner of the dressing room speculating about what is going to happen.

“We come into training every day and yes, we do have our concerns, but we just keep them to ourselves. Once the games come round and the manager picks his team we are all in it together.

“We are a good group of lads and when we lost three in a row recently we did not think it was the end of the world. We knew it would get better and we came back with two good away draws.”

“He will accept his fate and even if I would love to see him in the job for some time to come I am just one player.”

Does this mean others want to see him gone then?

Carlos your playing to keep the boss in a job you all seem to be doing a god job then.
Its not the end of the world when you lost 3 games on the bounce!!!
Yes it is for the fans we are tired of keep loosing games. Yes ok we got 2 good draws away but then we loose at home again.
You all need to get your finger out of wherever and start playing football for this football club.
Its a too big club to be where it is in the table, then saying that no club is too big to go down.
Sort it out if you want Jewell at the club and Jewell please start playing 4.4.2 again we might get somewhere.

For Gods sake when will people on here get over blaming Keane for jewels inability to manage and have some form of strategy.? It's two years nearly. he is so used to losing, his record at derby was appalling! Take a step back look at the stats since he's been here. They are beyond awful. He contradicts himself with every utterance. First it's experience with loaners then youth, then no more of each . Then back to old guys on loan replacing each other! Most town fans would rather watch a youthful town team give it a go than an aged bunch of mercenaries playing with one up front at home. Just go Paul or relegation is assured.

"We can only do so much to try to make sure his job is safe."

Well the fans can only "do so much" as well.

The frightening thing for me is that our captain was happy with 2 away draws. where have we ended up. what next? happy to get relegated as 3rd from bottom rather than bottom??

@ FATCATEVANS, totally agree with you m8, the worrying thing is - it looks like they are gunna stick with the fatman !! i would rather watch a team of youngsters giving 100% & playing with pride, than a loan player working on his fitness & collecting his weekly wage packet.
people are saying its still early enough to turn our season around... i agree, lets start by getting another MANAGER & get rid of CLEGG as well, i pray that its sorted sooner rather than later

'We come into training every day and yes, we do have our concerns, but we just keep them to ourselves'

Thats because if appears to us fans that you don't really care Carlos, you and most of the others that wear our shirt. You earn so much money that you are cut-off from reality and the daily hum drum that we all endure that is called work. Your job is a luxury, a pleasure, yet most of you take it for granted and think you are hard done by when you have to go training.

The captain of the team should be getting the players together to lift the squad and go out there are give 110% - not stick your heads in the sand. Yes, you have personally played ok lately but there are many that need to take a good look at themselves.

A manager gets the sack, the players keep their jobs. Where is the justice in that?

@fatcatevens,
Well said and a brilliant post!!!
I too am sick of people blaming Keane!
Apart from Edwards and few others all the other playing staff, coaching staff, fitness staff, and scouts are all from the Jewell era not keane!
As much as keane was a rubbish manager he still has a better record than Jewells!
Thats how bad it it!
Jewell out.

Norwich beater... You really really need to get with the times my friend, two away draws in this league IS a good haul! Especially on our recent form, i just give up commenting, you are all too pigheaded to see sacking ANOTHER manager will do NOTHING, we are what we are, if you want constant success, cash and marquee signings, im sure you will find season tickets at the nou camp or old trafford very reasonable.

As per usual a player once a week is wheeled out to say they back the boss and its up to the players to get it right.

I'm afraid Carlos and the rest of this miserable lot at PR have forgotten the objective set out five years ago when Evans turned up, it was to get us into the Premiership. To be fair at the time this was achievable with Town having more funds than other Championship teams. In reality I would settle for a season where it was possible just to have a battle to get into sixth place.

But judging by the three defeats followed by the two draws remark (no wins in eight), it seems that success will now be to avoid relagation. This is totally unacceptable, not helped by constant remarks form Clegg and Jewell saying we can no-longer compete on the finacial playing field. Ok if this true then find a manager who can get that bit more out of the players we have.

No victories in the second division (yes second division) since August is no-longer acceptable - time for a change!

Poor start to season. Drury out on loan. Bring in loans - good winning streak ooops teams work us out, Bullard out, long losing streak, injuries mean Drury and Hyam get their chance and bring some solidity and passion to midfield. We stop long losing run. Start winning games. One bad performance and Hyam dropped. Leadboots in. We start losing again.Dismal end to season. Leadboots walks (what a surpise). Bring in new central midfielders (eventually). Ok performances but bad results. Drop Hyam. Bring in N'daw. Midfield solidity. Bring in Wellens. Drop N'daw completely.

Just one part of the team, albeit an important one. All of it under Jewell's management. Please can the Jewell apologists tell me when and where in this sorry story Paul Jewell shows us that he has a plan, a style of play and a sense of what he wants from our midfield. Where does this illustrate he is the man for the future? Yes Keane was the worst thing ever to happen to Town imo, but persisting with Jewell is not far behind if that is what we do.

Two away draws is only a good haul if we win our home games and we're not. The overall results in 2012 are pitiful. When will all you PJ lovers realise that this slump is not a recent phenomenon. We are where we are, the second worst team in the league and things are not going to miraculously improve until a new management regime is installed. Just read Carlos' comments; the players know that a change is imminent and are keeping their heads down. If you cannot see the extent of the problem it is because you, my friend, have buried your head in the sand.

Come on everybody there's 36 games to go. That's 108 points. That should keep us out of the relegation zone. The squad has until the 20th to rediscover the net and work out how to play together. Should be solid by the time we play hull. Whereas hull players will just be chillin out thinking how rubbish we are. More fool them.

Mwahahahaaaahaa. Unlikely. But we live in hope.

I agree that PJ did a very good job in sorting out Keanes mess...but from his first Summer transfer window it has been clueless.

This to me says it is a topic, might not be a big topic but still a topic.

Football is a game run on results and no matter how people put it we have yet to pick up results. At this time I would be happy to play badly and pick up some valuble wins but if your playing well and still not picking up a big "W" you hve to ask whats going on behind closed doors.

"We're playing to keep Boss in a job"

Really?? So why havent they been trying for the last 2 years then?
The buck stops with the players NOT the manager. And this has always been the case.

Stand up and be counted you players. I for one am sick and tired of watching half hearted performances from you utter shower , in the full knowledge that you will be pckcing up more in a week, in wages, than most fans who watch you, would get in a month

Whithout trying to seem flippant, when i sit and consider the football i have watched at P R so far this season, the only premier league we are bound for is the Blue Square. I cannot think of any positives whatsoever.

So just so we have this right then. Edwards is hearing whispers but has not spoken to Jewell. Jewell is off at a family wedding , Hutchings and half the trainers are playing golf with a few of the players and the rest are off.We have less than 8 days before a vital game against Hull , looks like no one cares to me.Who knows where Clegg is ? This club is falling apart and needs leadership, they are all swanning around doing their own thing, while they get paid exhorbutant salaries that we help pay. This club has been my life and the current crew need to shape up or ship out .

After two relatively solid games, the Cardiff result at home really put everything back into perspective. quality of football is dire and we are at the moment deserving to be where we are. Jewell has had his time and a victory at Hull will only cover up the problem and prolong his reign for another few weeks.

on another note, i have just seen Owen Coyle has been sacked at Bolton. he performed wonders at Burnley with a small budget and had a very good season with Bolton in PL before last season, and surely a young, hungry manager who instills a winning mentality would be ideal right now?! should get him in before someone else does i.e. Blackburn!!!

OWEN COYLE has just been sacked by Bolton how about that for an option Mr Evans?

Edwards was our best player on Saturday. I was surprised the difference DJ Campbell made. Scotland came on and the difference was horrible.
After Scotlands performance I would hope Murray would be ahead of him and given a chance but he won't be because PJ seems to have no confidence in Carson, Hyam, Murray..........or anyone he hasn't bought.
