Clegg: Tipping Point Was Reached
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 16:19

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says the tipping point which ended Paul Jewell’s management of the Blues was finally reached after last night’s 2-1 home defeat to Derby County. Jewell, whose time as Rams boss was coincidentally ended after a 1-0 defeat to the Blues in 2008, left the club by mutual consent this morning.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Clegg said: “We’re very disappointed that we have parted company with Paul but we’re in a very results-driven business, a very public results-driven business, and the results speak for themselves.

“The table makes it very clear that the performance of the team over this season hasn’t been what we would have aspired and hoped it would be.

“Regrettably the manager needs to take a lot of the responsibility for that and Paul and ourselves have separated today.

“Some fans may wonder why [the decision hadn’t been made before], but at the end of the day the decision has to be made by the owner and myself. We reached a tipping point. We had conversations with Paul and that culminated in his departure today.”

Clegg says last night’s last-minute loss coming so soon after such a similar defeat at Hull City marked the end of the road: “That was a very important tipping point.

“We thought that after the defeat at Hull at the weekend - which was a bitter pill for us all to swallow, particularly in terms of the way we came away with nothing having been 1-0 up - that we should give Paul two home games as a final attempt to turn things around.

“Obviously, to lose in the way that we did last night in a similar fashion having been 1-0 up again, was bitterly disappointing.”

Asked why he feels the last two managers haven’t worked out, Clegg said: “It’s difficult to put your finger on it.

“We’ve appointed two successive managers who had a good pedigree and background in terms of being experienced team managers who have both been responsible for taking clubs from the Championship into the Premier League. But it’s just not worked here.

“Ultimately you get to a point where you reach a tipping point and you decide it’s in the interest of both parties to part ways, and that’s where we are today.

“I do accept that the owner and I are the only two people at this football club who don’t make the appointment with the benefit of hindsight and we have to shoulder that responsibility, and that’s what we do.”

If the lower North Stand is now so poisonous - which i contend it probably is - then don't associate.... move.
Mind you, you will be nearly as disappointed elsewhere. They might not be many but the vitriol is profound wherever you sit.
The days of being able to wander away from thepompous, the verbal, the idiot and the drunk are now gone - football sold it's souland with it the Corinthian spirit thatTtown used to imbue in its club, team and ground.

My concern is that while this man (for want of a more suitable description), is still in a position of power and decision making, could very well c**k it all up again by appointing another cheap, uninventive, has-been!

Lets have a sensible appointment of someone who knows this league, is hungry for success and who hasn't been out of the game for years! Billy Davis, Owen Coyle or Mick McCarthy had better be near the top of your list ME. Failing that Hoddle bringing his brand of football would be nice but again, think he could well have been out for too long now.

What a load of management speak twaddle Mr Clegg. If this is a results based business as you put it, how should we judge you? Both your managerial appointments had to be sacked, your interventions in player transfers have been counterproductive, attendances are their lowest for years, and we're bottom of the table. If you really do accept some of the responsibility then you should resign too.

what an arrogant pompous p***k you are Clegg, if you had any bo**ocks you would fall on the same sword that PJ has but you are far to obnoxious and full of your own self importance to realise that you have a big part to play in the demise of Ipswich Town Football Club

I can not believe the tripe written on here about Sheepshanks. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't be in this mess. Clearly he knew how to charm the more intellectually challenged supporter with a friendly smile and a handshake. While with the other hand he was shafting our club with a hot poker. I don't want sheeptits back and if it wasn't for ME then we would've been Portsmouth.

I appreciate that Clegg and ME seem distant but they aren't Mr Cobbold and never will be. And besides where did sheepsh*ts disappear to when times were hard — that's right he hid and sacked the manager....hang on he blamed someone else who he managed for his failings....sounds familiar.

I cannot believe people are talking about Redknapp or come to think of it any other manager with Prem experience - i think we need a hard working younger manager with an experienced /Ipswich man next to him sign up Taricco or Venus to work with the teams and start playing football with passion
A manager with experience of getting out of league one would be good start as well

Mr Evans - 'Your' Mr Sheepshanks made it happen!

His mis-managment ensured we will never again be the 'family club' we loved in the past, from now on we will always be a rich mans play-thing!

Apologies if I missed your irony

If you know what the 'tipping point' feels like then why haven't you sod off yet Clegg you hypocrit! At least Jewell had the decency to leave when he knew his time was up!

Why on earth would Venus and Taricco leave their current positions and come to Ipswich?

Recruiting an experienced person has failed us with the last 2 managers but seemed to work Ok when Royle arrived. We need experience to guide us out of the mess and deal with managing a very expereinced squad but we also need to have new ideas, new energy, new enthusiasm - new belief - qualities that you may only get with a manger on the up.
It really is a massive appointment -go with a safe pair of hands and we will probably stay up but may be typing the same points in 2 years time, take a risk on a young Robson/ Burley type charachter and get it wrong and we will go down, get it right and I think we can get quickly get out this league if Evans gives the backing to the new man that he has given to others.

The last 9 managers to go up:- Adkins, McDermott, Allardyce, Lambert, Rodgers ,Warnock, Houghton, Di Matteo, Holloway.

This man is a complete cretin. Totally out of touch with the basis of our football club and in my opinion is the main reason for the clubs current plight. Of course he doesn't pick the team etc but feel he let PJ down a lot and has done his utmost best to alienate the supporters with the club.

He should also do the honourable thing and walk !!!!

Now I wonder why that might be Mr Clegg!

What really concerns me is who will Clegg pick next

Why do people think that clegg picks the new boss. Obviously Evans would ask somoeone with some knowledge. Why would Clegg have a single clue?! He is purely here from a business perspective and rightly so. Unfortunately he doesn't know about football and in turn this has prevented his business decisions from being pertinent. I would imagine that if Keanes "all football" ideology had produced the results that he had hoped, we would be in a very different position both in terms of the league and financially. Keane wanted the players to want to win. Jewell thought the players should win. Both have failed drastically because the people they bought or loaned couldn't give a toss. Please may the next manager nurture the youth and those players with heart not "character".

Love football.

I hope you're next for the chop Clegg!

"Asked why he feels the last two managers haven't worked out, Clegg said: “It's difficult to put your finger on it."

Is it?

It's only difficult from the point of view that you'd have to shoulder a lot of the blame, you Muppet!

“I do accept that the owner and I are the only two people at this football club who don't make the appointment with the benefit of hindsight ..."

Or any knowledge of the game, the club and it's supporters!

Clegg, you are the real infection within this club and the only cure is for you to get your marching orders.

It's time you were put out of our misery and made to walk the long walk out of Ipswich and back under the stone you crawled out from

CLEGG OUT, CLEGG OUT, CLEGG OUT!!!

just like to say didnt find the constant slating of paul jewell by certain people on here very impressive. whatever you may think i believe he gave job 100% it obviously hurt him as much as anyone and he didnt try for a big payoff. i thank him for his efforts and wish him well in future pursuits most decent fans will see it this way but a handfull of morons at last nights game made me feel ashamed to be town fan . bring in billy davies

Completely agree with Mr Evans.
While I couldn't agree with many of PJ's decisions I would never abuse a manager of the club I support.
PJ was in a no win situation last night - if we'd won 4-0 people would still be calling for his head.
The personal abuse towards PJ last night left me feeling sad and a bit embarrassed to be an ITFC fan.
Not a game I was pleased to take my young children to as the atmosphere was just plain ugly.

Any one know or hazard a guess as to what the "tipping point " will be for Clegg to get the push? Please God let it be soon. The success of the next Town manager will depend upon Cleggs departure from this great Club.

The right decision for Jewell to go has now been made and ME and Clegg have to now make the appointment of their lives for this club.
Lets hope lessons have been learnt and whatever we think of Clegg he isn't going anywhere so lets get behind the management team to make the right decision.
I hope and pray this is the time we finally move forward.
Jewell's gone so time for the players to be counted and lets have 3 points this Saturday.
The team owe it to the best supporters in the land. COYB.

Its a shame the tipping point was when we reached rock bottom, its not as if this has suddenly happened its been coming a long time .However Jewell 's departure dosnt and wont put things right if Evans and Clegg dont also get their act together. It realy is important that the right man is appointed and there realy is the backing [not just words ] to get ITFC back to a Club with credibility and prospects .Lets see some real positivity from the outset of this new era .
