Jewell Says Goodbyes
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 14:22

Departing Blues boss Paul Jewell said his goodbyes at Portman Road this morning, still frustrated that things didn’t work out for him at Town. The Liverpudlian’s time as manager of the Blues was ended by mutual consent on Wednesday.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with Ipswich Player, he said: “I’m gutted it hasn’t worked out and even now looking around the place, it’s so frustrating that it hasn’t worked out.

“I could not have given any more because I was desperate to see Portman Road packed and the club being successful and it’s the right decision for me to leave.”

He says he’s given Town a glowing reference to prospective successors: “I had a few managers on the phone to me yesterday and I told them don’t hesitate as the job is now available because it’s a great football club and I really hope the club goes on to great things because it deserves it.

“Ipswich is also in very good hands with the owner. Marcus doesn’t interfere in any decisions football-wise and is right up there with the best chairmen I have worked with — and I have worked with some really good ones.

“I know there might be some people out there knocking him but sometimes people need to be careful what they wish for. He’s 100 per cent committed to the club and wants success for Ipswich as much as anyone.”

Agree with most sentiments. He tried his best but not quite good enough. A shame really as a lot was expected of him. Perhaps he should have ditched Hutchings and co, who I believe is totally inept, and bought in some decent back-up staff. Hey Ho, onwards we go!

Good luck Paul. Kind words in there.

I hope he knows/someone let's him know that he's going with a lot of respect from a large group of fans, and not the disrespect from morons that sung "you fat scouse b*stard" the other night. I was ashamed to call myself an Ipswich fan that night.

It was definitely time to move on and he leaves us in a terrible position, but I will try to remember Jewell for what he did when he firs

i had high hopes when you came here but you have left us in a very poor position we have to have either JOE JORDAN AND HARRY OR JOE OULD BE AN EXELLENT MANAGER ON HIS OWN OR MICK MCCARTHY THESE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO MOVE THIS CLUB FORWARD NOONE ELSE CAN POSSIBLY BE CONSIDERED OR IT WILL BE THE SAME OVER AND OVER AGAIN AGAIN THESE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE.

Good luck Paul! Maybe he would have turned it around eventually, we will never know. In modern football there is no "wait and see", unfortunately sometimes.

Thanks for the effort, but obviously your best means last on the league table after a quarter of the season gone. Thats very poor. NThe next manager can only bring us up the table

Maybe some on here should take note of his comments about the owner. Im not interested in what he looks or sounds like, only that he makes the right decision this time.
All the best PJ.

It really does sound that out of the last few managers to leave he is generally upset about it
but while I do feel sorry for him I think that him, the fans, and the club all new that it was his time to go.

If anyone has a subscription to Player, you need to see the interview. Proper heartfelt. I'm gutted for him that it didn't work out. Said some absolutely great things about the club and the supporters. Morons who insulted him personally should be ashamed.

The interview reminded me why we are a excellent club and why I'm proud to support it

Absolutely gutted that it didn't work out for Jewell. He really is one of football's good guys, and it's such a shame to see it end the way it did. With Keane I was celebrating the day he left, but that's not at all the case with Jewell. Sadly, though, I think he's lost his touch as a manager and it is a career as a pundit that he might have to settle for now.

I haven't watched the interview Phil, but did he mention working with Simon Clegg. He seems very quick to jump to ME's defence, but odd (or not!) that he didn't say what a good bloke SE is to work with. Am I reading too much into this.

Anyway, good luck PJ, I believe that you did try your best and I'm certain that the Dark Lord didn't get too many good wishes when he left, so take some comfort in that!

It was never going to work was it? Simon Milton made a valid comment though about what can happen if a manager is successful at one club and then not always able to carry it into a new job. Picking a new manager is a minefield for the person making the decision.

bluey123- no one is arguing that Jewell failed as our manager, but im pretty sure he is as disappointed at that as much as you and i but quite why you have to show such hatred toward him i do not understand. Says more about your own shortcomings than PJ's.
He could quite easily of released a statement slagging ME or SC but has come out and praised them, he also could easily (and justifiably in some cases) blamed the players, but he hasnt.
He has shown class and respect toward the club, shame you cant return it.
