Edwards Sad to See Jewell Leave
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 15:12

Skipper Carlos Edwards was sad to see Paul Jewell move on but says he and the rest of the squad are right behind caretaker-boss Chris Hutchings ahead of Saturday’s game at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Edwards told the club site: “It’s sad to see Paul leave because he’s a nice guy but unfortunately things haven’t quite worked out for us.

“But life goes on and the guys are just going to roll their sleeves up for Hutch now in preparation for the game against Sheffield Wednesday.

“We will give him all the support he needs and everybody is rallying together at this sad time. We are going out there to play for him and hopefully we can get a good result.”

Meanwhile, Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson says he doesn’t fancy being Paul Jewell’s successor: “I have no interest in the Ipswich job.

“It’s a great club obviously, but I am very happy where I am as everyone is committed to a project that I believe in completely. I was coming to work with a smile on my face even when we were losing every game.

“Paul Jewell is a good man and a good manager, but sometimes you go to a club and it just doesn’t work out for you. Something similar happened with me at Preston.”

Why is this bloke allowed to talk to the press? First job for new manager, take captaincy off him and ban him from speaking to the press! His comments have hardly helped the present scenario.

If all your mates had rolled your sleeves up from the start of the season, we wouldn't be in the s*@t now, would we!

You and the rest of the squad are a bigger disgrace to our club than PJ ever was. Concentrate on your football fella and getting the rest of them over paid, over rated and uncaring team mates of yours showing a little bit of passion and desire on the pitch.

I don't quite see what Edwards said to cause you all to get so upset... Not sure why Darren Ferguson thinks he'd be offered the job, too.

Read Edwards comments a couple of times. It almost sounds like ... 'now he's gone we can start concentrating on our football again'...

I'm sure he didn't mean it like that as some times the written word can be interpreted differently to the spoken word, but it does make me wonder whether Edwards is the right man to be talking to the press.

He certainly is not a strong enough Captain on the pitch to make sure "sleeves are rolled up" and everyone is pulling their weight.

Would anyone else consider having hope Powell (England manager) here? She is very successfull in women's football so I can see no reason why she and others shouldn't be given a go in men's football.

One fundamental thing that the manager needs to address is WE NEED A LEADER

We haven't had one since Jason De Vos.

No offence Carlos, but in your own words you are so laid back you could sleep in water ...hardly the stuff of a captain.

I've been really disappointed with how Edwards has handled the media in recent weeks. He's an honest and hardworking guy, but he doesn't seem to understand how his comments in the last week or two undermined Jewell. Comments like (I'm paraphrasing here) "Jewell has to win against Derby or he's out", or "Some players don't like him", really don't help. As club captain, he has a responsibility to toe the party line and not rock the boat, give us a bit of stability, and have loyalty to the club, manager, and owner.

Even this comment can be seen in the context of "We haven't been working as hard as we could have done, but now we'll put some effort in." That's not what he means, but people will take it like that. He needs to be more careful in picking his words, or the press office need to give the responsibility to someone else.

At least with Darren Ferguson we wouldn't lose because of the six minutes stoppage time at the end of every game....

I think Carlos has done a good job for us at full back, when he isn't a full back... But he must be worried as surely anyone who comes in gets the defence sorted first? Then where does Carlos play? He would not get in my first choice eleven if we had a nailed on right back....
I think that if he has the character that cresswell should be captain, yes he's young but he is the sort of quality player we need to build a team around..,

Some of you need to stop whinging and get behind the team. Jewell is gone, we're in limbo until the new manager comes in, so just get behind the boys for a change rather than getting on their backs. Who knows, maybe we'll get a reaction and a result on Saturday.

We still need to sort out defence big time, as what we have are too likely to collapse with a decent striker challenging them. I believe a youngish centre half who can boss the rest of the defence is whats needed, and he should be made captain. The captain needs to know whats going on all the time, a central position at the back is really the only place that can happen. Mickey Mills was the exception.

Stop talking Carlos; you're the captain on the field not the spokesman off it.

less talk and more action on the field please and that includes mr chopra!! all the players need to take a long hard look at themselves for this current mess too.yes paul jewell made many a mistake but some of the mistakes and lack of fight in certain games has left me amazed, and angered.i wonder what millsy mathie and co really think of the current crop of players!they have to be pc on the radio. half of them dont deserve to wear the badge!

“But life goes on" .........................yes, you will still be an overpaid shower, alongside your overpaid shower of team mates, regardless of who is in charge. Although, through gritted teeth (as I think you're one of the worst right backs to ever play at this level of football) you do appear to put in just a tiny bit more effort than some of the lazy gits around you.

Nothing against Edwards comments but some of these so called players at the club need to wake up as I hope whoever does come in clears some of them out as some of them just arent up for the challenge and, to put it frankly, dont have the balls to work hard for the team and ultimately the club.

Some need to wake up or ship out as I have had enough of some of these players, they have no excuses and makes me angry that the manager goes (which I agree with) but players stay picking up a good wage irrespective of their attitude or performance.

Be fair Edwards will get questions fired at him about this all the time, he may not be astute at handling the media but at least he is talking and trying to step up to the role of captain and we need leadership now. I imagine many of the things written are taken out of context or just made in passing but fans are unhappy when there is no news from the club or there is no see through to what is happening behind the scenes.
