Hutchings: Senior Players Let Me Down
Saturday, 27th Oct 2012 18:33

Caretaker-boss Chris Hutchings felt he was let down by his more experienced players as the Blues slumped to a dismal 3-0 home defeat in what’s likely to be the former Chelsea full-back’s only game in charge.

Hutchings admitted that it was very much a below par display: “It wasn’t very good, obviously there was a lot of anxiousness about.

“Any manager or coach will say to start the game brightly or sharply, and we conceded after 46 seconds or whatever it was. That puts you on the back foot straight away.

“Then for 10 minutes we came under the cosh a little bit and as the game wore on we got back into it a little bit, but didn’t create too many clear cut chances and were wasteful with a few freekicks.

“In the second half, it was pretty even. I thought they scored a little bit against the run of play in that particular phase. I’m not saying we were dominating the game in any way shape or form because we weren’t.

“Then we’ve obviously tried to make changes to try and get back into it and it opened up a little bit more.

“The things that we’ve been working on very briefly in the last couple of days, about trying to get down the line, we’ve let their wideman cut inside and score, which is very disappointing.”

He says the more senior players were outshone by the youngsters: “One or two of the older players haven’t performed anywhere near what they can do, but I was pleased for Luke Hyam and Josh Carson, they were the only bright sparks, showing a little bit of effort and commitment.

“I don’t think we got it from one or two of the older players, but we conceded in the opening minute and confidence in sport is a massive thing. Whether that affected one or two remains to be seen, but it was very disappointing.

“I thought Josh and Luke stuck to their task well and showed a little bit of enthusiasm and a little bit of workrate.

“Sometimes when you put younger players in you could ask for a little bit more quality but I thought those two did all right today.”

He says words were had in the dressing room: “I was angry, disappointed, that should go without saying.

“The players are disappointed, one or two things have been said that will remain in the dressing room. It’s not good getting beaten 3-0, I’ve got to come up here and defend that.

“I told them they need to look at themselves in the mirror. I don’t pass it out of play, I don’t pass it to the opposition, and the players that haven’t performed anywhere that they can know that.”

Asked whether the players are waiting for the new manager to come in, he added: “I don’t think they’re waiting for something to happen because they should be professional people and have that desire and drive to perform for anybody. It’s their job, they get well paid for it and that’s what they should do.

“They haven’t [performed] for a while, and that’s why they’re four points adrift at the bottom of the table.”

He says they should be able to cope with the speculation that’s currently surrounding the club, and believes that self-belief is the biggest issue: “I think what it is is a lack of confidence, like in any sport.

“When you’re down you’ve got to show a bit of balls and come back. Some can, some can’t, sometimes it takes longer than others to come through periods like this.”

The Sir Bobby Robson Stand chanted ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at one point in the second half, and in some cases Hutchings found it difficult to disagree based on that performance: “I didn’t hear that, but that’s their opinion. They probably are right for one or two.”

He admits that whoever comes in has a difficult task: “It’s going to be very hard whoever takes over, but you have to grind it out.

“If you can get new players in, I think that’s what’s needed, if I’m totally honest. But that remains to be seen.

“You never want to take over a team at the bottom of the table but it’ll be an opportunity for someone.”

He says he’s yet to decide whether to bring the squad in for training tomorrow, as has often been the case after defeats and is in the dark about where things go in the immediate future: “I don’t know. I was just told to try and prepare for the game. We’re just taking things day by day as all the staff do.

“That’s what happens at football clubs. The manager goes and someone has to take charge of the team and the day to day running of it, the training, and you get on with things. It’s not a nice scenario, but that’s how it is.”

Massimo Luongo played for parent club Tottenham’s U21s this morning, but Hutchings says he’ll be back at the club on Monday: “Being a loanee, they have called him back to play as he wasn’t in the squad and we’ve allowed him to do that, but he’ll be back on Monday morning.”

Wednesday boss Dave Jones believed the result had been coming: “We’ve felt that for the last five or six games. We’ve stuck to what we believed in and kept believing it would turn and unfortunately for Ipswich today, they probably got the full force of us.

“On Wednesday [against Blackburn], the one thing we didn’t do, and the only thing we haven’t done over the last four or five games, is put the ball in the back of the net. We’ve dominated games.”

Today, i can say hand on heart that was the worst Ipswich team i have seen in a home match for 45 years. The players are not fit to wear the shirt & to man should donate their wages (far to high) to a local charity. As posted above, it was gutless, spineless drivel, no one took any responsibility on the pitch, no leadership from anyone, this is my lowest point in supporting the club i love. I could weep buckets right now. Whoever takes over will need instill some bo***cks into this bunch of no hopers. If they then don,t show passion & desire, get them out of our club.

Well said Sam white spot on mate.
What had we to lose today, why play one up front.
Why give Hutchings the selection when the mess is half his fault i'm sure there is someone in the coaching staff who has got some idea.
Why leave it till we go two down to change things, when we were rubbish from the very start of the second half, not just after we conceded the second goal.
At half time we were one down try somthing different may be five up front lol least we might have seen a decent shot yes a shot on goal.
What a easy day for kirkland needed a rest after his punch in the face in mid week.

Another shambles, just shows how the relationship is between Hutchings and the players. With Jewell it seems there was some kind of division, once Jewell goes his number two who is perhaps even more unpopular takes charge, a formula for further disaster. Palace number 2 seems to be doing alright, beating Leicester today, it shows you have a group of players willing to listen to whoever is in charge. You dont get that here because there are two many players with bad attitudes and not willing to fight. Pay whatever it needs to get Holloway who has always been my first choice. Will get us playing and will also be ruthless, if not big Mick because he will get results and push us forward. I understand the patience Clegg and Evans but too much patience and I fear we may be too adrift.

And why Luongo is not in the sixteen is beyond me, he would start for me but there you go.

'Senior players??' we dont have any.. The dross can buzz off and fester at other mugs of clubs.. we have been taken for a ride by these feeble half-wits

Perhaps now the club may reflect that they were absolutely wrong not to bring in some decent permanent signings during the Summer, who could have helped us settle towards being a decent team by now, instead of several loan players who couldn't give a toss.

Matt is out of the country that is why he wasn't on Radio Suffolk.

The problems at Ipswich go deeper than the manager will take many years to sort the problems at town so in the mean time let's all get behind the team COYB

Just because some of the players didn't like Jewell or Hutchings does not give them the right to bring down the club by playing rubbish or having a bad attitude. Professional pride should dictate that they perform. A lot of people do not like their bosses but we still have to perform in order that we stay employed.

I wonder what odds Chopra got on a 0-3 scoreline. Either way he'll be out on the tiles tonight.

So much for flying fethers eh? Hutchings, by all accounts, won't be in charge for long, but I personally think he should have been shown the door along with Jewell, with Klug taking on the role of caretaker.

Hopefully the board settle on a sensible choice of replacement manager. With a bit of luck, their first action will be to ship out some of the superfluous loanees and then use the January window to bring in some lower league talent, preferably starting with the back four.

This promises to be a long, painful season, one that could well end in relegation. We've just got to soldier on and get behind the incoming manager.

COYBs!

Complete waste of space and money. No imagination, no drive, nothing creative, and above all no will to win. You can't just blame Jewell and Clegg for this situation, when there are players that don't deserve to wear the shirt, or for that matter any professional footballers shirt.

One blessing for whoever comes in a manager, it can't get much worst - can it?

Well the next step down,,,, is to be top of div. one !!!

Cresswell just isn't the same player as last year. However, there is no pressure on him. The cover at RB and LB has not been addressed for 15 months and he and Edwards have no pressure to perform.

For all his attacking prowess, Edwards will never make a left back. He has no defensive skills whatsoever. The new manager has to address this problem as a matter of some urgency.

Got our tickets for Birmingham, hope the new manager is in place by then and Hutchings and his team are long gone.

You jest but the sad fact is it will be true. The sooner Chopra goes and makes waves somewhere else the better. --trouble is he owes Clegg £250000, --0h thats why he is still here!

Thank you for your efforts Mr Hutchings, I wish you well in finding a new position of employment and I appreciate you did your best for our tremendous club. However, we need a new broom and we need one fast to sweep out the ideas and philosophy that yourself and Mr Jewell have left us with. To me now there can be no gambling we have to go with proven success. That means McCarthy, Davies, Redknapp (don't think hes interested) or at the outside Burley. Much as I would love a young up and coming manager I dont think we can take that risk. We are up **** creek and we need someone with a paddle!

Like the team i feel the lowest i have ever felt following town in 35 years but please can anyone tell me what good it does to berate the players and abuse them during the game? How in any way do you think it helps? There are some fans, sorry, so called fans who really don't have a clue. I'd go with Sir Bobby's description back in his day but also just add that they can stay away because if that's your idea of supporting your team we don't need you.

Matt Holland was actually at the game today, he said he would not do the show because he did not think it was appropriate???? Read in to that what you will.. Saw him in the pioneer or whatever it is called now with his son, there is also a bit of a rumour inside the club that its him and Curbs to come in.
