Hutchings: Senior Players Let Me Down
Saturday, 27th Oct 2012 18:33

Caretaker-boss Chris Hutchings felt he was let down by his more experienced players as the Blues slumped to a dismal 3-0 home defeat in what’s likely to be the former Chelsea full-back’s only game in charge.

Hutchings admitted that it was very much a below par display: “It wasn’t very good, obviously there was a lot of anxiousness about.

“Any manager or coach will say to start the game brightly or sharply, and we conceded after 46 seconds or whatever it was. That puts you on the back foot straight away.

“Then for 10 minutes we came under the cosh a little bit and as the game wore on we got back into it a little bit, but didn’t create too many clear cut chances and were wasteful with a few freekicks.

“In the second half, it was pretty even. I thought they scored a little bit against the run of play in that particular phase. I’m not saying we were dominating the game in any way shape or form because we weren’t.

“Then we’ve obviously tried to make changes to try and get back into it and it opened up a little bit more.

“The things that we’ve been working on very briefly in the last couple of days, about trying to get down the line, we’ve let their wideman cut inside and score, which is very disappointing.”

He says the more senior players were outshone by the youngsters: “One or two of the older players haven’t performed anywhere near what they can do, but I was pleased for Luke Hyam and Josh Carson, they were the only bright sparks, showing a little bit of effort and commitment.

“I don’t think we got it from one or two of the older players, but we conceded in the opening minute and confidence in sport is a massive thing. Whether that affected one or two remains to be seen, but it was very disappointing.

“I thought Josh and Luke stuck to their task well and showed a little bit of enthusiasm and a little bit of workrate.

“Sometimes when you put younger players in you could ask for a little bit more quality but I thought those two did all right today.”

He says words were had in the dressing room: “I was angry, disappointed, that should go without saying.

“The players are disappointed, one or two things have been said that will remain in the dressing room. It’s not good getting beaten 3-0, I’ve got to come up here and defend that.

“I told them they need to look at themselves in the mirror. I don’t pass it out of play, I don’t pass it to the opposition, and the players that haven’t performed anywhere that they can know that.”

Asked whether the players are waiting for the new manager to come in, he added: “I don’t think they’re waiting for something to happen because they should be professional people and have that desire and drive to perform for anybody. It’s their job, they get well paid for it and that’s what they should do.

“They haven’t [performed] for a while, and that’s why they’re four points adrift at the bottom of the table.”

He says they should be able to cope with the speculation that’s currently surrounding the club, and believes that self-belief is the biggest issue: “I think what it is is a lack of confidence, like in any sport.

“When you’re down you’ve got to show a bit of balls and come back. Some can, some can’t, sometimes it takes longer than others to come through periods like this.”

The Sir Bobby Robson Stand chanted ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at one point in the second half, and in some cases Hutchings found it difficult to disagree based on that performance: “I didn’t hear that, but that’s their opinion. They probably are right for one or two.”

He admits that whoever comes in has a difficult task: “It’s going to be very hard whoever takes over, but you have to grind it out.

“If you can get new players in, I think that’s what’s needed, if I’m totally honest. But that remains to be seen.

“You never want to take over a team at the bottom of the table but it’ll be an opportunity for someone.”

He says he’s yet to decide whether to bring the squad in for training tomorrow, as has often been the case after defeats and is in the dark about where things go in the immediate future: “I don’t know. I was just told to try and prepare for the game. We’re just taking things day by day as all the staff do.

“That’s what happens at football clubs. The manager goes and someone has to take charge of the team and the day to day running of it, the training, and you get on with things. It’s not a nice scenario, but that’s how it is.”

Massimo Luongo played for parent club Tottenham’s U21s this morning, but Hutchings says he’ll be back at the club on Monday: “Being a loanee, they have called him back to play as he wasn’t in the squad and we’ve allowed him to do that, but he’ll be back on Monday morning.”

Wednesday boss Dave Jones believed the result had been coming: “We’ve felt that for the last five or six games. We’ve stuck to what we believed in and kept believing it would turn and unfortunately for Ipswich today, they probably got the full force of us.

“On Wednesday [against Blackburn], the one thing we didn’t do, and the only thing we haven’t done over the last four or five games, is put the ball in the back of the net. We’ve dominated games.”

'Feathers will fly', well we were well and truly plucked today. The longer this sad and sorry saga continues the more costly it will become - fans more disillusioned, team ethic more fragmented and the chances of getting in a half decent manager to turn this club's ailing fortunes around are fading by the day.

Welcome back to Jas0999, to tell everyone 'I told you so about PJ' and well done to DozzellsBobblehat, to point out why everyone found his posts so tiresome.

Lets hope that the right man is appointed this week to sort out this mess....and QUICKLY!

I'm afraid Mick McCarthy may be the answer - it's just the question I don't like (who can save us from relegation?)

The first mistake was sacking Jim and installing Keane to, essentially, raise the profile of the club. That incompetent fool stripped the heart out of the club and destroyed the progress of our youth policy (selling Rhodes, Trotter etc, letting Klug leave).

The second mistake was appointing a Manager who had been out of the game too long and whose most recent experience was unsuccessful (Derby).

To rectify this my only conclusion is that the club appoint someone with experience of stabilising a club, ridding them of over-priced detritus, providing some defensive backbone, and recent proven (relative) success. To my mind Mr McCarthy is our only hope of surviving in this league. And that fills me with very little joy or excitement.

oh dear the club is in crisis - wake up Mr Evans and Clegg, this needs to be sorted NOW , a new manager has to be in place by Tuesday latest and the right man who will kick ass!! to find out who really wants to play for this club. There is still time to save this season, the fans deserve much better and all they really ask is 100% commitment from the players. Training in this situation should be easy, it is a dogfight now and see who wants to work hard then picking the team from players who show the desire to fight for this club and earn there place on merit, no matter who they are or what age!

If this was 13 games till end of season then we would be in serious trouble but still early enough for any new manger to think he can turn things around; also
we are only a few good results from getting out of bottom 3 and a few others are beginning to sllde down to make that slightly easier. If, as it seems, a few of the squad had turned against PJ (and Hutchings?) surely a new man will galvanise them to turn it around? And if any still not up for it the new manager has been promised funds in January to bolster things. All in all I can see us getting to some mid tableness eventually.

No bright spots today, just the grim reality of the results of relying on journeymen and loanees. I thought Hyam and Carson gave it their best, Creswell looks completely devoid of confidence. As for the rest - least said, but we need to give the captaincy to someone who gives a toss and Henderson may as well have been playing for Sheffield.

From being a previous season ticket holder in seasons gone by, to only being able to make games when work permits, and I can afford it, I decided to take my 3 year old to his first ever Town game today. My first ever game was at home to Nottingham Forest in 1985, and Terry Butcher scored a towering header for a 1-0 win. I was hooked. Today My son said to me and his Grandad with 10 minutes on the clock, "I want to go home now"

I couldn't blame him, as the football on display from Town was frigging awful.

Whoever comes in to take over has got a massive job on their hands. I'm afraid that I fully expect us to be league 1 next season, and struggling in that division too.

Why have we brought in so many god damn loanees. Henderson, pointless. What message does that send out to Loach. I feel sorry for him, makes a couple of errors and he's dropped for someone who's not better than him.

Edwards looked woeful, and for how many years will I have to scream that he's not a god damn right back!

I could go on and on and on, but I'm so disgusted with the rubbish i saw today there aren't enough swear words in the dictionary.

I'm afraid that until things start to look up, I.T.F.C. won't be getting a penny more of my hard earned money. I want the £50 back I spent today!

For me they need to bring in McCarthy or Coyle. It's too much of a gamble to go with Di Canio or Robinson. If we could tempt Holloway away from Blackpool that would be awesome

With PJ gone, there was no where today for the players to hide. They had to give a good account of themselves. I predicted they wouldn't. Got that right. Because th problem was never just PJ. It was the players too. I think the new manager needs to sort out the wheat from the chaff in short order. Which will include several 'big names' being shown the door. As regards the new man/managment team, I think it must be from a short list of proven experienced managers. So, put aside dreams of pretty football as the focus has to be on performances, results, commitment and courage. My short list from those being discussed, in no particular order is:

Curbishley, McCarthy, Holloway.

I do think too that people like Holland and Mick Mills could add a dimension of coaching support. But once you select the number one, you have to give them freedom to select their own preferred team.

Welcome back Jas..... a lot of truth in what you say and well done for being right when many of us were wrong for backing the support of time for Jewell, however without the bennefit of hindsight i would support any manager being given time.

The club is in total disarray, a fact you seem to enjoy, Its not big or clever to play the " i told you so" card . Everyone is hurting big time especially the long suffering supporters. No one is doubting your knowledge of football, but smugness is not what is needed. You were right all along now lose the smugness and lets try to move forward....together

o man..... why can't you all relax a little ? the joy of being on the bottom (allegedly} is that the people who are actually damaging our towns club will have to do something about it or leave..either way the club will win....it seems to me that management may not be the problem here............changing managers or the choosing of managers seems to be the problem ,if jimbo had been left alone and supported financially none of this nightmare would have happened....the continuous changing of the people who are not at fault will not advance our cause....

I have nothing to add really.

The speed of the momentum that we are spiralling out of control is building and I can't see any light at the end of the tunnel. We need a new manager and the right manager quickly if we are going to get out of this. I would sack all the senior players if it would be possible based on recent performances. Admire Hyam's efforts though yesterday.

Why isn't loach playing. Henderson is no better but even if he is loach is ours and probably the only player at the club who gives a sh1t

This was one of the worst displays I have ever seen at Fort Portman Road.
Gutless from the opening whistle. We could have been 4-0 down in the first 10 minutes. Totally desperate in all areas of the pitch.
We made Sheffield Wednesday look like a world class side.
Hyam, Carson and Cresswell - fit to wear their shirts
Everyone else- abysmal
Clown defending again. Felt like I was at the bloody circus again. Cross after cross bombarding our box. Truly gutless.
Fans singing on mass "You are not fit to wear your shirts"
Sheff Wed fans singing in the second half "we want 10, we want 10" as they pounded us time and time again.
If it was a boxing match the towel would have been thrown in after the first 20 seconds.
Ashamed of our team

All these managers mentioned.Like there is a line up for Marcus to pick from!!! Lets face it people, whoever manages this club has to work under the biggest muppet in footballing circles. Simon (Im right you are wrong) Clegg.

Billy Davies.......Can you really see this fella with all of his out spoken views working with Clegg? Can you see Clegg even considering him?

Same for Big Mick McCarthey....Will Clegg want to be "Undermined" under McCarthey?

This club needs a strong controlling manager who understands football and players needs and concerns. A manager who should be allowed to express himself and be critical of all things relating to his department even if this means upsetting the CEO.

Town need to dismiss our CEO BEFORE we can move forward as a club. PR is not a happy place to work, It has'nt been for some time since the dismissal of Derek Bowden and the appointment of a rugby playing ex regimental NCO who has no respect from players or their agents and couldnt close a deal if it feel in his lap!!!

There is some light at the end of the tunnel for the next manager. The situation is quite simple. The current batch of players are simply not good enough (or don"t want to be). PJ was clueless at developing a squad and this is what we've got. The team today was all PJ's players , Carlos apart (who had an absolute shocker!! and he as we all know is not a right back in the true sense ) so he is solely to blame. Hyam game through our ranks and was the exception being very ,very good. But the most of the rest are indeed not OUR players and the new manager is not stuck with them . Send them all back and start again. Lee Martin's contract is up at the end of the season as is Carlos's so don't renew if the new manager can get better( which i'm sure he can!) . So start again, Loach is good enough (remember he kept us in games many times this season which more than out ways his mistakes against Cardiff), Luke Chambers is ok i think ,hyam in the centre and Paul Taylor up front. That is a decent spine around which a NEW team should be built.
You can see why we have struggled this season with PJ and Hutch at the helm . These guys are supposed to be "knowledgable men" in the game but seem absolutely clueless! PJ gone, Hutch goes to see Blackburn V Sheff Wed, comes back and says they are a big side who will cause trouble at set pieces. So to team selection --- 1 up front (joke) and that front man is 3ft 6". and play it upto him. What an opportunity to play Moshni up there along side Chops /DJ and then at set pieces we have an also the presence in defence .Not rocket science!!!!!. Good riddence to the two of them (not a thank you from me for their efforts we are in this position because of the players they have brought in mainly) but at least we can get rid of these and hopefully start again .

Lets get one thing straight. Yesterday was quite possibly the worst performace I've seen at home for a long, long time. Management and players may well blame confidence or whatever, and that may or may not be a reasonable factor.

On that note that is where we come in. As expected the attendance was up yesterday (down purely to the fact Jewell had gone) and I personally think that is a shocker. You either support the club or you don't. Bottom line is we have way to many fair weather supporters now who think they can demand this that and the other. We are all entitled to opinions, I'm not stating otherwise, but some of the 'support' to the team is a digrace.

Football fans, whether they like it or not, have to take the rough with the smooth. Some of our fans seem to think they don't. That's not how it works I'm afraid.

Last tuesday there were chants to get Jewell out (clearly everything was his fault) whilst yesterday there were chants against the players (now their fault). I suggest we get back to helping the club get out of this mess by giving them some encouragement?? From that the results will pick up and everyone will be happy (although certain North Standers will never be)

“If you can get new players in, I think that's what's needed, if I'm totally honest. But that remains to be seen."
Well, let that be a reminder to anyone (can't be anyone can there?) who feels sorry for Jewell. Even his number two realises his signings have been poor! The reality is of course that they actually just need a proper manager. This is not a bottom of the table squad but we have had a relegation management team from the Chairman downwards.
What is the reason for the anti-Burley grumbles? Can people please have a reality check. It is not possible to recreate the Robson era; no-one is ever going to do an ITFC of being a little club at the top of the league. Becoming a Stoke is as about the best that we or any other team outside the rich half dozen can hope to be. Can we all start stop dreaming please!!!
You want the historic reason why we are in this mess? Go back to Sheepshanks after we finished fifth, the completely baseless aim to do that or even better in the next season as though it was the old millennium. You want current reason why are still in this mess? See Cleggs comments in the wake of the sacking, that the dream is still to get the club back to the old days. TWTD, they never ever will be again! Just try and hope for a team that plays nice footy again, raises kids that can be sold for good money, and that can go up and survive going down so it can go up again. I'd settle for a team playing nice footy again.
