Smith to Skipper All Whites in China
Wednesday, 14th Nov 2012 10:09

Tommy Smith is set to skipper New Zealand today as they take on China in a friendly in Shanghai. Smith again takes the armband with regular captain Ryan Nelsen missing the trip.

The All Whites have only trained together once since meeting up for the game in which Smith will win his 21st cap.

The 22-year-old is unlikely to be back in training with the Blues until Friday morning ahead of Saturday's game at Leicester.

Smith has all the makings of being a class player for us, every season I think it's going to be his year but, so far, each season he's kind of faltered. I still remember Magilton starting him ahead of Bruce in the first game of the season and thinking he was going to be our stand-out youngster coming in, but he just doesn't seem to kick on.

The fact that he's captaining NZ and Mick McCarthy seems willing to play him will hopefully show us once and for all if he's going to make the grade here, or end up in League One.

I suppose I forget he's still really young, he's probably our longest serving player now isn't he?

I really hope he gets a decent run in the team now, and delivers like he did at the back end of last year.

Good luck tonight

Best of luck Tommy. Shame these internationals disrupt clubs.

Sensible comments alex. I dont think he has kicked on with ITFC due to being put int he firing line week after week, but he has for new z. His first couple of games was patchy, but now considered the heart of a defence that left the WC unbeaten.
