Campbell Set to Go Back to QPR But McCarthy Hoping He'll Return
Monday, 31st Dec 2012 14:41

Striker DJ Campbell will play the last game of his loan spell with the Blues against Brighton tomorrow but with manager Mick McCarthy hopeful that the 31-year-old QPR striker will return to Portman Road. The Town boss says the frontman is keen to join the Blues permanently with a fee having been discussed with the Premier League club and a contract offered to the player’s agent.

McCarthy says Campbell, whose spell ends on Saturday, will return to QPR at least for the short term: “I’ve spoken to Harry and what he will do is he’ll go back first, this will be his last game because whether we’d got permission to play him in the cup or not I wasn’t going to play him.

“He’ll go back and then we’ll see what happens after that. I think Harry in his position will justifiably want to have a look at him.

“That was always the case, he was going to go back and we are trying to do a deal to keep him. Hopefully we can, fingers crossed. We’ll see.”

He says personal terms have already been discussed: “We’re speaking to his agent and I’ve spoken to DJ and we’ve offered him a permanent deal effectively — there’s a permanent deal there for him if that’s what he wants to do.

“But it’s not only him, it’s agreeing with the club. Ts and Cs, terms and conditions for everybody. I haven’t spoken about terms, I don’t get into that, it’s down to the club to decide that, down to Marcus and Simon to discuss that.

“I’d advise and prompt and probe and suggest what we do to what level, but I think we’re capable of getting a deal with him. I hope so anyway.”

McCarthy, who confirmed that a fee has been discussed between the clubs, says Town’s 10-goal top scorer wants to remain at the club: “DJ wants to stay. He wouldn’t want to be playing for QPR because he’s not been playing for them and the way things were with him.

“I’ve never asked him that question, but I guess if he was to go back and Harry stuck him in the team and he played well and he scored and he’s happy, he’d want to stay there. And why wouldn’t he, playing in the Premier League?

“If that’s not the case, then he loves it here and he’s be happy to stay provided we could do a deal with him and his agent, and with QPR, for him to stay. There’s a lot there to be dealt with.”

Campbell is set to rejoin his parent club in time for training on Thursday morning and could play in their FA Cup third round tie with West Brom on Saturday.

You'd be surprised Mick at how many deals we seem to lose out on, just ask Jewell. These transfer windows we have to offer more funding for Mick to work with because I bet not all his deals will go through swiftly when at the club having a medical.

Harry will play him in the Cup against WBA to get an idea if he is worth keeping. No points at stake.

Hopefully DJ won't perform

I honestly cant see Harry wanting to keep DJ at QPR. At 31yrs and hasnt been part of the original 25 man squad , I doubt he will get a look in when Harry starts wheelin n dealin

I think i speak on behalf of many fans when I say how respectful we are of what DJ has done here regardless of whether he returns. He came in at a time where the club was really struggling and even in the early stages of his spell when we were at the bottom he showed great fight and a willingness to do well. So often loan signings don't seem bothered but he seemed to genuinely care for the club and scored some vital goals and without his goals I am not sure where we would have got them from, seemed popular amongst the group too. cheers for your efforts DJ, would love to see you come back but the club will always have a warmth to you.

It's not about what DJ wants, it's about what QPR want and if they're not going for broke with expensive new strikers, we won't be seeing him back here.

Would like to see DJ stay but I'm afraid I have my doubts as I think that someone else will want him more than we will.

I truly believe that DJ will eventually come back to us and quickly, what's he got to lose. QPR are in such a mess at present which even Harry will not be able to stop them going down. Harry has two very good stirkers already and although they are sidelined at the mo; will want a younger striker to get them off the bottom. We'll know within a week. COYB!!!

Not an Ipswich type player, scored some goals but done nothing for the club as a whole. Good riddance DJ

Although this was inevitable, it still gives me this feeling of disappointment. It means that Harry has told DJ he wants him back at the club. And that means that it's going to be a long month of January without DJ, 'cause QPR will have a busy transfer window I reckon. Just had a quick look round the QPR fansite forum, and it ain't a pretty sound you're hearing there about the current squad. Fans don't manage a club, but my guess: a couple of players out, a couple of players in, and DJ going nowhere until the strike force up front is up to Harry's standards. Only then and not before we are in with a shout of signing him up.

Still hopeful on signing him up, but the in the next few weeks, it'll probably be up to Chopra/Murphy. No disrespect to Chopra, but DJ has been on fire!

Just be a tiny bit wary of the Clegg factor,in this and other player personal terms Mick. Charlie Austin had all but signed(according to Keane) till he walked into Cleggs office. Just might have been a whole different ball game for Keano if he had signed.

I am quite sure, that Mr. Evans and Mr. Clegg will do whatever possible to keep DJ at the club. However, we should all be thankfull that they manage the club in an economically sensible way. Nobody want us to follow Pompey or beeing sold to some asian pineapple producer! A happy new year to everybody. In MM we trust and in Evans and Clegg. I do!
