McCarthy Has Long List of Potential Targets
Friday, 4th Jan 2013 06:06

Manager Mick McCarthy says he, assistant Terry Connor and their scouting staff have a list of potential targets as long as the Blues boss’s arm as they look to add to their squad during the January transfer window.

McCarthy, who added Leeds defender Patrick Kisnorbo on loan yesterday, said: “I need to get some players in, we’re talking about loads of them. We’ve been sat in there with [new scouts] Dave Bowman, Taff [Ian Evans] and [chief scout] Steve McCall and we’re going through a list of names as long as my arm."

The Town boss was asked whether there had been any developments regarding striker DJ Campbell, who is back with QPR, and also Richie Wellens, who was on loan with the Blues from Leicester earlier in the season. But as ever he was keeping his cards close to his chest: “I won’t talk about individual players who are at other people’s clubs.”

However, he did feel that life at Loftus Road will have been dramatically affected by their 1-0 defeat of Chelsea earlier in the week: “Everything will have changed at QPR this morning, although I don’t know because I haven’t spoken to Harry since.

“I saw them on the TV this morning saying it’s changed - Harry might be able to get players in, that will have given then a lift, that he’ll probably be looking to have Shaun Wright-Phillips playing in behind Jamie Mackie, it’s not so bad after all, they’ve just beaten Chelsea, the Champions League winners. But they’ll still want to have a look at DJ, I’m certain."

Suffolkpoker to quote mick and other town managers "we would like to bring players in early but clubs don't want to sell untill they get reinforcements in" look at us we never let players go until end of the window.

Good news. A list as long as Mick's arm. So if we end January with no significant signings then there will be something wrong. It is still my biggest worry that the club will fail to secure the signings McCarthy wants, just as happened with Jewell. Remember the Portsmouth three a year ago? We hoped to get two or three of them, and ended up with none. It seemed that every time another club was interested in a player, we lost out to that other club. Has that changed now? I really hope so!

MARK .... I think the difference now is that players might want to come.We are looking a bit brighter of late and there seems to be a good feeling about the place for a change.I do believe a creative MF is badly needed and a pacey winger might get us near the playoffs...COYB

It's clear that in the past both Roy and PJ struggled to sign players - although Roy was perhaps more successful. It will be interesting to see whether Mr Clegg and Mr Evans are able to improve on previous failings - as both previous managers commented that they had identified targets, but the club were 'unable' to do the deals.

What I do like about MM is he doesn't just talk the talk. With PJ we often heard week in week out that he was going to sign players within days / weeks - but as the weeks went by we rarely did. MM lost an experienced CB and immediately acted to ensure someone was in to provide much needed cover. Loans are not ideal - but at least we have CB options for the next few games.

Exactly we have a whole month to get faces in. As long as the club dont go down its fine. We are never going to do a Reading this season.

What puzzles me the most is the lack of rumours about who we're looking to sign, under Jewell there was rumours non-stop about our potential targets. Not a bad thing though IMO, because Mick has already shown he can move swiftly in the transfer market without much hype.

I have been one of the biggest critics of Clegg but credit where its due can someone name me the last target we DIDN'T land. In fairness the club have been very much improved for some while now and even the last few loan signings under Jewell were made without fuss. I was really disappointed with the number of players who came to portman road and didn't sign but there is no point in banging on about it forever.

BossMan. I would say George Boyd at a guess? A player i still think we should go for. We are crying out for a creative central midfield player who would assist a number of goals and also score a reasonable number too

Unfortunately the try before you buy system in place ( a la the loan market) can only provide us with young players who are too good (Dos Santos, Townsend,Livermore,Noble, Colback), old players who are soon to be past it (higginbotham, Wellens), or recovering or injury prone players ( Barnett, kisnorbo,Dyer etc.). For whatever reason (money) no-one wants to sign for us. However if you ask the players that have, they tell a different story. Take Cresswell and Jet for example. The absolutely love it. Loach loves it. All three have got stick for performances, but love the club. I don't have a point...

Such a shame about Taylors injury... he's exactly the kind of attacking option we could do with and are probably looking to get in right now in my opinion.

I'd still like us to sign George Boyd, he'll make Lee Martin push harder for a place and an automatic replacement if he doesn't sign a new contract. We could do with a central midfielder to replace Reo-Coker (I PRAY!!!!)

Two wingers cos we are no threat down the wing with LM and CE someone who can take that player on and have an end product. And not go backwards and slow play down the Brighton game showed us how uncreative we are so another creative player like Andy drury with bit more pace

Let NRC go more money for a better replacement

In the papers today, it appears Spurs are willing to replace Livermore. Could be a good bet if his expectations for wages are not too high.

I know MM said that he would prefer early business, but we are no longing able to have first pick. Other players have to change clubs for our realistic targets to become available. Nothing MM, ME or Cleggy can do about that.

Can't believe people are moaning already. Wait til the window closes and see who we have or haven't got. Then moan if you have to.
