Wordsworth Looking Forward to Big Town Crowds
Saturday, 2nd Feb 2013 06:00

Playing in front of bigger crowds at Ipswich than he was used to as a Colchester player held great appeal for Anthony Wordsworth when he was weighing up his move.

The Portman Road new boy, who can operate as a central midfield player as well as wide on the left, is eager to appear in front of the Town supporters on a regular basis.

Wordsworth, 24, said: “I can’t wait to play in front of a big crowd. I played a game here in the Carling Cup a few years ago and that’s probably the most people I’ve played in front of.

“I’m really looking forward to playing again at Portman Road and hopefully I’ll thrive on it. All footballers want to play in front of big crowds. That’s the aim and now, hopefully, I’ve got an opportunity to do that. I can’t wait to get going.”

While Wordsworth remains confident that his former club can beat the drop in League One, he is equally certain that he will not be returning there with his new employers next season.

He added: “Ipswich had a good period over Christmas and gathered a bit of momentum. A couple of results haven’t gone too well recently and the teams around us have been doing okay.

“We’ve got to pick up results and from what I’ve seen in training I think we’ll be fine.”

I see you're up and about at 6:00 a.m. this morning, Phil. What better way to start the day than checking out the news on TWTD. My take on crowds: 1) We don't get bad crowds considering what's gone on in recent years, but of course, "could do better" 2) It would be great to get back to the atmosphere of 25k+ a few years ago. 3) One thing you have to grudgingly admire Naarwich for is that their crowds didn't drop even in League 1. 4) Having said that, Naarwich is a bigger place than Ipswich, and finally 5) Come to think of it, with the prices we charge, it's amazing we get anybody at all!

I don't understand having a half empty ground? We need to get more people in however we do it if its kids for a quid because an adult will have to come with them. Surely getting some revenue for a seat is better than leaving it empty?
