McCarthy: No Arguments With Martin Red Card
Tuesday, 5th Mar 2013 23:11

Boss Mick McCarthy had no complaints about Lee Martin’s red card during this evening's 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, but was less sure about Richard Stearman’s dismissal. Away from the two sendings off, the Blues manager was delighted with his team’s battling display despite the loss.

McCarthy said: “We were unlucky not to hold out, it was a poxy deflection that has cost us. They didn’t look like they were going get it any other way.

“As for the sendings off, Lee Martin, I’ve no arguments with that. As [Henri Lansbury’s] tackled him, he’s knelt on him and stood on him and messed him about, but it’s the one that retaliates always gets it.

“I don’t think Lee Martin elbowed him that hard [for him] to be down on the floor as long as he was and rolling about, that annoys me, but it’s a sending off. I’ve no argument with that.”

He added: “Whatever he’s done, he’s deserved it because he threw his elbow.”

“The second one, I’ve tried to look at on our view. At the time I thought he was going to book him but I’ve just looked at it and he seems to have shooed him off the pitch.

“If someone shows me an angle where he’s hit him in the face, then he deserves it. But I can’t see that yet.

“I don’t think he did. Andy [Reid]’s rolled around, the crowd are baying for blood and he’s gets another sending off. I’m a bit pissed in the manner of them, of course, but, as I say, the first one I’ve no arguments with and maybe Stears doing it having been booked was a bit reckless on his part.”

McCarthy says he’s spoken Martin and will have a longer talk with him later on: “Very briefly, I’m not going to stand and have a long-winded chat about it.

“It’s cost us the game, the two sendings off. One was bad enough, the second cost us. Of course, I’ll be having a discussion, I wouldn’t tell you what I’d said anyway, even if I had.”

The Town boss felt his side might have had a penalty in the first half when Martin was fouled, referee David Webb awarding a freekick just outside instead: “It could have been, it was right on the very edge. Maybe if you’re at home you get it, if you’re away you don’t.

“And that’s the truth of the matter, I’m not bitching about it, that’s the way it is. I haven’t really seen a slo-mo replay that tells me. I saw it very briefly at half-time and I thought that he could have given it, he might not have given it.”

Overall, despite the result, the Blues boss was full of praise for his team: “The really are fabulous, I was really proud of them, the way they went about their job and it was a fantastic effort, but we’ve lost and they’ve got the crowing rights because they’ve beaten us.

“It doesn’t matter how, it won’t say that at the end of the season, it’ll just say three points. Disappointment, but proud of the way we went about the job.

“It was a great effort, we gave them a couple of scares near the end, even with nine men, but it wasn’t to be.”

Martin now faces a three-match ban and Stearman a one-game suspension, which the Town manager admits gives him a problem ahead of Saturday’s trip to fellow strugglers Peterborough: “Sure does. We’ll have to get our thinking caps on and see what we can do.”

McCarthy says he didn’t want to risk skipper Carlos Edwards: “His pubis symphysis is sore and I don’t want to play him in this one and then lose him for three games. Maybe that looks an even wiser move now.

“Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was just poorly today, but that was irrelevant because we’ve played well. It doesn’t matter who was on the pitch, the lads have done great.”

Forest manager Billy Davies was pleased with the win, particularly with the match coming so soon after Saturday’s early evening victory at Sheffield Wednesday on a heavy pitch: “What we got tonight was a grinding team that looked completely leggy and they dug in and eventually got an excellent three points.

“It was very frustrating for fans. It was very frustrating to even watch the game because at times it was quite difficult to see what was going on [due to the fog].

“Don’t ask me about the penalty because I don’t know, I haven’t seen anything. Don’t ask me about the sendings off, I don’t know, I genuinely don’t know. I haven’t seen anything.

“All I can say is that they deserve a lot of credit for the way that they just keep working away.”

Very proud of the boys tonight can't fault them. Absolutely hate Lansbury, shame Martin didn't punch him in the throat and give him something worth rolling around for!

Proud of our team - shame Billy davies doesn't acknowledge that his leggy team struggled to win against 9 men...

Good effort lads. Unlike at times during the previous regime, we are really trying 100%. With this attitude and work ethic we'll be safe.

Once again, Lee Martin shows how much of a moron he really is

I was going to write something insulting about Billy Davies as, however silly Martin may have been to retaliate, Mick's line about Lansbury kneeling on him, stamping on him and messing him about stood out. However, it seems we won on Saturday by getting Wes Morgan to lose his rag, so it's swings and roundabouts I suppose.

It's a shame that what sounds like a really gutsy performance didn't get a reward and that all the other teams down there with us picked up points. Mick has yet to lose two games on the bounce, let's hope that record is maintained for the rest of the season.

Landsbury was a disgrace, I was there with my dad and he made a very valid point that if you were in a club and with his girlfriend and you gave him what Lee Martin did. I'm not sure he's roll around then. And to add to that I would be ashamed if Lee Martin floored me. About 3 stone and boney

I take it not everyone knows that footballers persistently roll around like they've been shot on the slightest impact these days, you can't swing your arms about, gonna be a red

As much as Lansbury rolled around on the floor Lee Martin is a professional, and when your team is fighting relegation you need your best players to get up and get on with it - not react to something so stupid.

Quite frankly if the guy eventually signs a contract to remain here next season then I won't exactly be jumping around for joy. Martin has cost us in games before for silly or reckless behaviour, he must learn and cut it out of his game!

Martin is an idiot, and not that great a footballer, either. I really hope he goes after this season as he flatters to deceive too often and end product is woefully lacking. Overall, I'm so impressed with the progress we've made in the last few months defensively. Tommy Smith is my player of the season, he was immense tonight. I'd like us to sign Richard Stearman permanently, too. If McGoldrick had been able to play tonight I think we would have won the game. I thought Forest were very poor, but the luck they had tonight will probably take them up if it lasts.. I do think we'll stay up with something to spare, but Saturday's game is huge and if we get nothing there it makes it very nervy.

Ludicrously tight at the bottom of the table now. Next game now becomes critical.
A Boro win now would move them out of the relegation zone for the first time in about 4 months.
Pressure is very much on. We simply can't afford to lose the next game. If we get a point its a good result at this stage.
They will be all out guns blazing for a win. It could be our biggest game of the season so far.
COYB! Make us proud and get a win....

we now need to have a right go on the attacking front , try and score some goals. 12 points should be enough from the next 10 games. However points are hard to come by .

Lee Martin's testicles might get a little squeeze in MM's office this morning!

He said earlier last week (Lee Martin) he didn't care about what the supporters thought of him but it only mattered what the boss thought of him, well Lee you won't be in his good books this morning! Time to get back in his and our good book so start doing something on the pitch!

I haven't seen the incident so can't comment too much, but surely the lesson to be learnt here is that if Martin had been knelt on and stood on, he would have been better rolling about, screaming in agony rather than retaliate.

Raising your hands/arms to another player always results in a red car, no question about it, regardless of the provocation that went before.

Still as someone pointed out we were not whiter than white in gettiing Morgan to lose his rag Saturday. Swings and roundabouts.

Well at least Lee Martin won't be getting sent off at Peterborough, which will be a good start to a game where we need at least a point!

Ditto regards Smith, in fact Chambers has also been solid beside him.
Also hope we can sign N'Daw in the summer, he adds great presence and strength to our midfield. Nice to Hewitt get some game time.

Was also great to see MM change to a 4-4-2 in the first half, it shows that Town were on top and gunning for a goal! Again the red card changed all that.

Im not a big Lee Martin fan and there is no excuse for his behavior but the guy is a hot head & a commited player. if his quick free kick was allowed for Murphys goal and if he was awarded that penalty we would have been signing his praises. But these decisions went against him and with Landsbury mauling him its not surprising he boiled over and lashed out. He should have know better..

@ Cheshire Blue

He was looking at fog by the sounds of it. I think the fog must have been supernatural maybe it did strange things to Lee Martin, the ref and Billy Davies!

I feel for Lee Martin. I really do. He's looking for a new contract and I would guess the outside options are less appealing than what he expects we might have to offer. There is therefore a degree of pressure which prompts the frustration he inevitably feels when things don't go his way.

That said there is no excuse for any kind if misbehaviour on a football field and as a professional Lee would know that there is no margin for error. There does not appear to be any grounds for appeal and his future now hangs in the balance. Before last night the consensus seemed to be swaying to the view of releasing him; I think that's probably inevitable now.
