Ex-Manchester United Man Trained With Town
Friday, 12th Jul 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy has revealed that former Manchester United and Manchester City central defender Frederic Veseli trained with the Blues in Ireland last week. The 20-year-old from Switzerland, who was first mentioned in connection with Town last month, was released by the Red Devils at the end of last season, having joined them from their local rivals in January 2012.

Speaking after Tuesday's game at Crawley, McCarthy said strengthening his backline is currently his main focus: “I’m getting calls about lots of players they want to push to me and I keep saying that it’s defenders I’m looking for, quite clearly.

“We had Veseli, who was with us in Ireland. We’ve had Bongani Khumalo and we’ve had Dan Seaborne [training with us as well].

“I’ve only got five defenders, Elliott, Cressy, Tyrone Mings and my two stalwart centre-backs, Tommy and Chambo at the moment, so I need some more.”

Despite Veseli not having been involved against Shelbourne or in Tuesday’s friendly at Crawley, we understand that Town have not yet ended their interest in the FC Renens and FC Lausanne-Sport youngster.

McCarthy has made five signings this summer — with Waterford’s Jack Doherty looking likely to be the sixth — but the Blues boss wouldn’t be drawn on how many further additions to his squad he’s looking to make: “I need some more recruits quite clearly, but I’m not going to give you a number.”

Sign him up, young, cheap and hopefully hungry. He could learn from tommy or chambo.

Good to see that he doesn't count Edwards as a defender, much more effective as a winger. (Shakes fist the air) damn you Jewell!

Think experience is important at centre back so would want more cover than Veseli for a serious push at the play offs
Can he play at full back as well?

LankHenners added 09:05 - Jul 12
I'd rather have an out and out full back than someone who can play there if asked personally.

Mitchthelitfcman he's probably been training with two of the best centre backs in the world in rio and vidic so what the hell will he learn from smith and chambers?

think it might be hard to get an experienced cb, Smith and Chambers clearly, and rightly, first choice. Not sure how many experienced players would want to play second fiddle and wait for a chance

This lad is good by all accounts and has apparently not been happy with his chances in the Man Utd first team thus wanting to leave which shows he has ambition at least. Of all the released players, Utd fans are most surprised by his departure which says something. That being said he has had to play defensive mid or right back in their U21s last season as two solid CBs have generally been in ahead of him but rather than the flawed "old heads" defensive argument or signing players without potential for development like Brown, this is exactly the type of player we should be aiming for.

From a Man Utd forum-It has been announced that just 18 months after arriving, Frederic Veseli is leaving Old Trafford.
“Manchester United has a long history of young players coming through and hopefully I can follow and do the same.”
Those were the words of Swiss defender Frederic Veseli following his move to Manchester United from rivals City in January 2012. And yet just 18 months later, the 20-year-old is one in a long list of footballers seeking pastures new, having been released by their clubs.
Veseli's switch from the Etihad to Old Trafford may not have generated the headlines that similar moves have done in the past. But Blues' officials were said to be shocked at the decision, reportedly made due to the player's frustration at a lack of first-team opportunities.
And yet now, the player doesn't have a first-team in which to break into; a fact that will no doubt come as quite a shock to the fans who watched him in United's Under-21 side last season.
Just two months ago, we ran a piece hailing Veseli's performance in a 1-0 win over Southampton. Having failed to usurp Michele Fornasier and Tom Thorpe at centre-back, the young Swiss was growing used to playing as a defensive midfielder before he was switched to right-back for the match against the Saints. And he excelled; to such a degree that he was beginning to be hailed as the ultimate utility man.
So what happened? Why was a player who had been a regular in the Under-21 side until his injury against Tottenham back in April suddenly deemed surplus to requirements?
That is a question that may never be answered. United's Under-21 coach Warren Joyce certainly didn't seem to have any problems with the player when he commented on his absence through injury.
“It's frustrating for him as he's had a good run of form recently,” Joyce said.
And while not overly effusive in his praise, the player's appearances up to that point had not suggested he was set to leave.
The fact that he was consistently played, regardless of the position, spoke of someone it was hard to leave out; someone who

Sign him up! He has right back experience from united u-21. Guess he can tolerate being on the bench 50-60% of the season.

Garv ; AFCC - Sorry, what? You must be joking?

Edwards clearly demonstrated he is not a defender in the Carling Cup replay when he left the door wide open for their first goal & again was absent for their third, If they had left Jamie Peters, a defender, in the team ( Paul Jewell's first mistake) we may have gone on to win . Having pace when you've dropped yourself in the brown sticky stuff doesn't make you a defender!

& badgeritfc : Rio one of the two best defenders in the world.............Have you been tested for drug abuse!

Chambers is a good player But I feel he is the weak link in the town defence, when I said last year that Smith was the better player very few could see this, yes Chambers will start the season and good luck to him but he won't be a regular on the right hand side of central defence, we need someone far better than him in that position who makes less mistakes.

Beattiesballbag, Jaime peters wasn't a defender either

Beatiesballbag do you really think he'd still be playing for Man U if he wasn't still a great defender. Think you may well need to be tested for drug abuse.
Comments like yours are the reason I don't normally read people's comments on here. your bloody clueless!!

Scribble

He was good enough to keep the door closed in the first leg.
Both played on the wing one showed he could defend the other that he couldn't.;<)

I'd take him, IF he is as good as he turns out on FM2012...

In all seriousness though, I like solid Swiss centre halves. I'd take a Philip Senderos/Stephane Henchoz type player any day. Anyone know how tall Veseli is?

degausser added 12:48 - Jul 12
Could easily break him in and give him 20-30 games this season.

Can you remember a game against the Germans when Lampard had a perfectly good goal dis-aloud, If you asked the German team if they could name the English players that were playing do you think any of them would have noticed Rio whats his name! ............He certainly looked world class then didn't he!
Maybe he's taught young Veseli how to go shopping ............ instead of ..........what was it he was supposed to do?

Beattiesballbag your attempts to justify your claim that rio is not a world class defender are getting embarrarising.
badger is correct of course he is. you dont play for one of the top 4 clubs in the world for as long as rio and your country if your not.
i could find a bad game to reference for any player in the world but on thw whole rio is class and fergie clearly agreed so I think il take sir alexs judgment over yours.

we should sign this lad up simple as that--cover that could progress on the cheap

( not just world class but the best!)

They should't be surprised if someone starts firing back!!
