Mings Only Senior Player at Chippenham
Friday, 12th Jul 2013 14:07

Tyrone Mings will be the only member of the senior squad in action for a Town XI against his old club Chippenham at Hardenhuish Park on Saturday afternoon (KO 1pm). The friendly was agreed as part of the deal which saw the 20-year-old move to Portman Road in December.

Manager Mick McCarthy says U21s coach Mark Kennedy will be in charge in Wiltshire: “It’ll be Sparky that will be taking them down.

“There’ll only be Tyrone Mings that will be involved from [Wednesday’s] squad. I haven’t got enough players, they’re not playing down there. The U21s will be going down there.”

The rest of the travelling party is set to be made up of first-year pros and academy scholars.

Town's next first team friendly is at Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday (KO 7.30pm).

It's always been a game for an Ipswich XI, even though that might not have been the expectation of CTFC when the transfer deal was first done. Sad if CTFC have advertised it differently, and worse still if they have presold tickets on that basis, but it's not Town's fault.

Stretchy boy - I get that but it's worth pointing out that Chippenham also have a friendly with Swansea which they are clearly staring as a Swansea XI, yet not doing the same with Ipswich.

If it was a usual friendly I'd get us sending kids but as part of a transfer deal I just think its bad bad form

This is not the Ipswich way and I am disgusted. For you people talking about an Ipswich 11, have you no idea of right and wrong? MM this is your first black mark from me.

Stretchyboy/Dozzells_Bobblehat an Ipswich xi usually means a mix of youth and first team, a couple of years ago a spurs xi at PR included Ledley King and Younis Kabul, at Braintree last year an Ipswich xi included ALB, Ellington and Bullard- I agree not first choice players at the time but names people would recognise.

Slightly disappointed. But hey, I don't get the chance to watch the U21s very often, will be able to see some of the up-and-coming ITFC talent.

A bit aggrieved about this, from experience when Town play against local sides the first thing I do is find out who is playing for Town hoping that some of the bigger names are in the side. Usually there are a reasonable amount but to take just one is demeaning to Chippenham who I'm sure await the friendly eagerly. It's almost like "well we have to play the fixture, lets get it out the way and send the kids down, I don't want anyone getting injured" The only positive is that it's a chance for some of the younger lads to impress, and sometimes the younger players are more enthusiastic and the senior players laze around the pitch.

In fairness Ipswich said they would take an 'Ipswich XI' to Chippenham. This is well known speak for a 'reserve side'. Having said that I expected one or two of the senior fringe players to be involved. Also wonder if MM is using it as an opportunity to say to ME that he wants more players ...

As this is first mistake MM has made,as presume it is him, suppose we should forgive and forget;but definitely bad for ITFC image

A little disappointed as I was hoping to see a few first team faces, but it's not going to put me off going. Never seen the U21s before, and they're still a Town team so they'll still get my full support. I will admit, it must be very disappointing for Chippenham fans if they were expecting a game against a team comprising of a mixture of academy and first teamers - that was my understanding of a team fielding an 'XI' side.

One would assume that an XI is composed of a range of players. Otherwise the game would be billed as against "Ipswich U21s" or "Ipswich Reserves" so I think Chippenham fans are entitled to feel disappointed.

Good lord - what is the problem. This game has always been billed as an Ipswich XI which always means the reserves. Yes Chippenham could have hoped for one or two first teamers but it hasnt happened. Get over it.

I too live about 20 minutes from Chippenham and was really excited to hear about this fixture. I actually teach Tyrone's cousin too, so find it all highly disappointing. I have been talking to my children this week about seeing the likes of Smith, McGoldrick and Murphy who they have only seen on the T.V and to hear that NONE of them will be playing, well it's nothing short of a disgrace. My 7 year old actually cried when I told her. The posters round this way have not said Ipswich XI, so that argument is B******S and the whole thing is just downright disrespectful. I won't be going now, which is sad for Chippenham really. I've a good mind to write to MM on this one...

Yet another PR blundered from Portman Road to follow on from the failure to withdraw from last seasons Suffolk Cup. As for not having enough players to send that's absolute rubbish and to suggest they could get injured - they could do that in training so whats the difference. The great Sir Bobby Robson would never have done this nor would the Cobbolds have allowed it to happen.

I'd turn this one on its head if I were you. I see this as good development for our youth set up rather than a spurn against Chippenham. We owe Chippenham nothing!

Mick McCarthy stated that he hates pre season friendlies and doesn't see the point in them. We have 6 new signings and a lot to work on on the training pitch. Sending any of our already weakened squad would be suicide in what is going to be a very hard campaign. The ONLY reason MM is even sending Tyrone Mings is because he has to. We don't exactly have an abundance of defensive cover.

So support the team and take your kids to watch an entertaining friendly with two teams that have a slim chance of being on a par with each other. Would it have been fairer to send the first team to give Chippenham an absolute hiding and embarrass T. Mings old teammates?

I think we should take Chopra . . . and leave him there!!

The main reason that this is poor is yes: we've shafted Chippenham. What happens when another low ranked team have a quality player that we want? We offer them a friendly and they say . . . Oh no. We remember what you did with Tyrone Mings.
Very poor . . . and little foresight.

Town are a disgrace. This shows contempt for Chippenham and for Town fans in the area.

I love Ipswich fans, decent people mostly and rightly a bit miffed, a few of the first team could have been spared couldn't they :)

I think that a good looking Town team should be put out at Chippenham, they deserve it if Mings is to make it.

Difficult one as football clubs obviously need to do things that are in their best interests, and this is in Ours to do this. However, on the flip-side Chippenham and teams like that are teams that need supporting as they support football clubs like ours as we can take players, hence Mings arrival. Teams at a lower level than Chippenham support them at real grass roots level.

Where that tiered system fails is at times like this, but it does happen as mentioned to us as well. In an ideal world it would be a team with more first teamers in, but football and ethics don't always go hand in hand and thats just the way it is.

But I'm gunna make my way there today to see a bit of footy and see what Chippenham is all about! :)

Big game for chippenham, not for us. Why risk the competitive nature of non league try hards against first teamers on that terrible little ground 3 weeks before the season starts? Much better for the under 21s and the likes of marriot to show what he can do.

If chippenham really need the cash, they'll get the likes of yeovil, rovers, city, cardiff, swindon, swansea involved. Storm in a tea cup this one! Im with MM. Under 21-s is a good shout. Throwing in a few first teamers and separating then from the squad would immediately make then think they're not part of his plans for the upcoming season!!
