McCarthy Could Make Loan Move
Wednesday, 7th Aug 2013 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’ll assess the condition of midfielder Jay Tabb before considering a move into the loan market with five of his left-sided players currently under treatment. Tabb hurt his shoulder during last night’s 2-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Stevenage, while Aaron Cresswell (thigh), Tyrone Mings (knee), Anthony Wordsworth (calf) and Jack Doherty (ankle) have also suffered knocks.

McCarthy says his squad would be left very short if Tabb was sidelined and he would have to look at making loan additions: “I would have to. Let’s see who we’ve got first, but I would have to because we’d pretty depleted if we’d got him out as well.”

However, the Town manager says the former Reading man is confident that his problem isn't too serious: “Tabby, although he thinks he’s got away with it, we’ll see in the morning. He’s just jolted it, he hasn’t dislocated it.”

McCarthy says Cresswell is on his way back from the thigh problem which affected him throughout pre-season, but there’s less good news regarding some of the other injured players: “He’ll train on Thursday with a view to playing on Saturday. But Woody won’t be back and Tyrone’s probably out for a month.”

With so many of his left-sided players injured, McCarthy quipped: “I don’t know if any left-sided players will sign for me on loan, they’ll maybe think we’re jinxed.”

The Blues boss said he was particularly disappointed with his team's defending for Stevenage’s second goal last night, scored by debutant Jordan Burrow: “We just didn’t defend the second one.

“The penalty I can’t do anything about, I don’t know if it is one or not. The lads are chewing a little bit in there, but you’d expect them to be.

"The second one was a poor goal from us. For 45 minutes it was all right and then it all changes on a penalty.”

McCarthy didn't feel that the fringe players who came into the team made a solid case for their involvement at the weekend: “I can’t say they did.

"Having been beaten 2-0 at Stevenage, I doubt very much that the players who have come in are going to be knocking on my door suggesting they should be playing.”

After two defeats in the first two games, the Blues boss is keen to restore the pre-season positivity against one of his old clubs at the weekend: “We’ve got Millwall on Saturday, so if the enthusiasm’s going to be pricked then we’ve got to make sure whatever we have to do to heal it again we do it.

“I’m looking forward to the game, of course I am. I’d like to make sure we’ve got a few players back. Cressy will train on Thursday, as I say, but whether he’s fit enough or not I don’t know yet.

“It’ll be nice to play it and win it and have a week and recover a little bit. It will be another tough game because Millwall were beaten as well on Saturday.”

Little bit of bad luck on the left sided player front. However have we got good cover in all positions from our squad of 22. I think not. We also do not have a plan B if our high tempo work ethic related style is matched by the opposition. Central Mid worries me in terms of creativity. However WITH 10 NEW PLAYERS IN it will take a while for the squad to settle. How good they are time will tell.

Surely there has to be a little bit of money in the bank to make some signings. Yes on a serious note financial fair play has a negative effect , but when you make a signing generally speaking the transfer fee is spread over the period the contract is over. So as an example 500k spent on a player offered a 3 year contract would 500k divided by 3 ie 166k per year paid to the club who sold the player. Any side having a successful season needs to have goals . I found Nigel Adkins comments about targets really interesting. 100 goals scored and 21 clean sheets. That will get us promotion he said. A modern way of having players focus. We need a little bit of that

I suspect both Tabb and Wordsworth would prefer to play in the centre than on the left, wouldn't they? I think Tabb would can a decent job there as he has shown, but we are certainly short of cover for that position when he is not available.

As for defending, I feel sorry for Smith being moved to left-back and think we should return him to the centre with Chambers this weekend.

bluefeast - although I see what you are saying about the 10 new players; in fairness several of them were actually with us last season - and only ONE new player started on Saturday - so the gelling excuse can't really be used.

Concerned about the injuries and feel we need cover. It's unfortunate - although apparently Wordsworth has a reputation for missing more games than he plays. A striker a must for me.

It a little worrying that the fringe players did not perform.
Two games in and our squard is too small and out of one cup.My worry was the fact we signed 3 players from a club who got relegated and then one more from a relegated team who could not get in that side
Lets hope we get it right soon and not wait till November again or we have another season which is over before we even start.
Still think we should have stuck with the same sideaswhy do players need a rest after one game and 3 months off

Let us all hope our strikers can fire bullets and not blanks on Sat. ????? because even a draw would be a poor result for us !!

what is so wrong with playing october?
surely he would not have been offered a deal if he is not good enough.
he is a specialist left back so lets just play him there we have to give these young players a chance when we have injuries or I cant see when they will ever get a chance

Play five in mid when away from home. Lets not forget Taylor had great success at his previous club on right midfield. So Hyam and skuse holding. Tabb Anderson and Taylor supporting mcgoldrick. Away from home this type of set up could exploit on the break football. Plus we would not get done as we have 2nd half v reading when our mid dropped deeper and deeper and could only thump the ball forward. We would have 2 natural holding players that protect and some flair to cause problems in front of them.

If Cresswell and Mings aren't fit then i'd like us to sign a left back on loan for a month or so too. Didn't like seeing Smith there yesterday. As Mick said last season, 'You can't stick square pegs in round holes'.

Think we desperately need a goalscorer though. McGoldrick's a superb player but he looks more like a number 10 kind of player to assist goals as well as score them. We need someone who will constantly poach around the 18 yard box.

I was at the game last night. Wouldn't disagree with what MM has said. I think we lost momentum when Tabb went off, he seemed to be one of the only players with any decent creativity and desire. Didn't rate Vesili (the lad playing right back), looked well out of his depth. What I would disagree with in regards to fringe players not being involved is GERKIN. Thought he was fantastic last night. Commanding, great distribution and kicking, didn't miss a cross or 50/50 that I saw and made a couple of great saves, very solid. Didn't rate Taylor to be honest, guess you can put that down to lack of games and fitness, but was certainly not outstanding. McGoldrick showed flashes of brilliance and think for a freebie we've got a bargain there. Strikers need to be fed and if they are getting nothing from Midfield then half their battle is lost. Nouble looked like he was a lone striker to be fair (something everyone said about Chopra when under PJ) like I said, Taylor didn't seem to be in it much from what I saw, hence Frank seemed to be on his own. All in all, there's a good nucleolus of a squad there, they just seemed out of practice which is worrying as they've had all preseason to get ready and suss each other out. Ohhhh... and on a separate note, p**s poor management from the staff at SBFC last night. 1 turnstile open trying to get the Town fans in, big queues and no one seeming to know what was going on.

I dont think we need a new defender. Hewitt-Chambo-Smith-Cressy is a solid backline, but a CM and a winger with some creativity and flair? Yes please!!

From what I saw last night I'd like so see the below starting 11 for Milwall.... (if Jay Tabb isn't fit).

Loach

Hewitt Chambers Smith Cresswell

Edwards Hyam Skuse Taylor

McGoldrick Murphy

As a Herts Boy this was nice n local
Stevenage was always going to be tough - Westley , their Manager is back for a second spell and is a decent manager - they are a big team and play to their strengths
Alot of aerial football and we got sucked into it abit unfortunately
BUT ... Nouble was picked off every time too easily - for a big man he has no strength
I thought Taylor started to get more involved when Tabb unfortunately went off - I would have moved him onto the right , switched with Anderson - who needs game time - and bought McGoldrick to partner Nouble
I hope Frank doesnt go the way of JET !- He needs to step it up but maybe a goal on saturday will help
As far as the rest agree with above
Gerken looked solid no fault for the goals
Smith is not a left back and should be bolted on with Chambers - who was solid
Veseli and Barra were jittery and seemed a little behind the pace
Anderson needs to start running at people
Hyam was industrious and did make a couple of good foward runs - One particularly great move
Tabb was good until he went off
Skuse is a good player and did try to get ball down
Edwards crossing was poor when he came on but at least he made it to the byline or looked to deliver it
McGoldrick and Murphy look like they have a decent understanding - and def when they came on initially offered abit more
Overall though we looked abit devoid of ideas in second half and Stevenage were good for the result
Not great but I do think we have enough in the squad to do OK this season but injuries are a concern and we may need a LB and possibly a Striker

Bluetone - Jack Marriott is a long way off being a decent Championship striker.

That still leaves Anderson who could play left side midfield with Carlos Edwards on the right. Alternatively he could move Daryl Murphy back there or even recall Josh Carson. Left back is slightly more of a problem. I suppose McCarthy could always move to 3-5-2 playing Chambers, Smith and Berra as centre halves, Anderson and Edwards as wing backs, Skuse, Hyam and Tunnicliffe in midfield with McGoldrick and Murphy up front.
