Edwards Eyeing Soca Warriors Retirement and Coaching Future
Thursday, 8th Aug 2013 19:02

Carlos Edwards is already looking to finish playing at Ipswich and would like nothing more than to stay on board to launch a career in coaching. The 34-year-old skipper was in action for Trinidad & Tobago at last month’s Gold Cup but admits he could have played his last game for his country, having won 87 caps and scored four goals.

Edwards said: “I’m the most senior, the oldest, guy in the team at the moment. If I need to I will take a back seat then maybe call it a day.

“My main focus at this present time is Ipswich Town and I am looking to strive for us to do well. This is my family now and Trinidad & Tobago is my adopted family because for 95 per cent of the time I am here.

“It is hard being away from my own family. Even when I’m getting ready to go off to training my daughter wants to know where I’m going. I tell her I need to work for her to get food!

“I have younger twins and as soon as they see me walk through the door they are all over me like a rash. That’s what I love because I’m a family guy and I want to be around my kids as much as possible.

“Sometimes I can’t be around because of my job but I hope they understand when they get older. I want to help Ipswich in any way possible and if it means I have to call it a day with Trinidad then so be it.”

Edwards has already decided he would love to turn to coaching once he does eventually hang up his boots but he hopes that day is still at least a couple of years off.

He added: “I’m 34, almost 35, now and to be fair I might have lost an inch of pace. But the body feels okay, the legs feel okay and if I don’t get too many whacks I think I can maybe carry on for another two years or so.

“Time will tell how long I can take the physical battles, the pre-seasons, things like that, but I’m doing okay at the moment. If anything the pre-season has been a bit easier because they take more precautions with the players. My ticker feels good, touch wood.

“I’m contracted until the end of the season so who knows after that? Maybe I’ll score 20-plus goals this season and Ipswich will give me an extra year. I’m happy here and I’m not looking or playing for another move.

“If I have to move, fair enough, but I’d like to see out my time here. My family are happy here and if they’re happy I’m happy. If they’re not I will have to find a new job.

“If things fall into place I am going to start my coaching badges sometime soon. Maybe Mr Evans can get me a job in the academy and I will work my way up from there.

“I have already spoken to people like the academy coaches and Mark Kennedy and they have given me a heads-up on what to expect. I want to take the first steps while I’m still playing and if that opportunity arises I will jump at it.”

Go for it Carlos.
Incredibly paced for his age and in good shape.
Seems to have respect of all players, hopefully will make a good coach in the future

Credit to Edwards for still playing at international level at the age of 34. He is still very fit and one of our fastest players, so will be useful to have in and around the squad for the next couple of years.

Respect to Edwards too for being the only Keane signing still at the club! (unless you could Murphy who came on loan)

Go for it Carlos. Been by far the best servant to this club from the Keane era. I do think we should start looking at alternatives for right wing but he can still do a decent job when required.

I cannot fault Carlos for his commitment to the club. He has been a great servant for us. However I am thankful that this is his last season with us. Unfortunately the time when he would have been best for us (ie still at his fastest and most useful on the right of midfield) was about 2 or 3 years ago, when that clown was playing him in defense. This is the season we need to bed in his replacement - which I hope is Anderson. I wouldn't start Edwards these days as I don't feel he has an end product, but he would be a definite player I'd be looking to bring on from the bench. Cute kids too (from the end of season lap).

Complete respect for carlos, solid professional, hardworking individual throughout the game and has great ability.
Hopefully has a couple of years left in him.
Don't know if people class him as a legend, but has been a great servent for our club.
All the best for the future :D

How many ex players do we actually need on our coaching staff then? They must nearly outnumber the playing staff

I still hope he gets 100 caps.

Despite not quite living up to expectation and price tag, Carlos has been a very good servant to the club. I'd love to see him get a job on the coaching team in the future.

Think his first team place should be under threat this season, but would say he's still an important member of the squad and of course club captain.

He has been one of the better players in the first two games, getting on the ball, beating his man and getting the ball in the box. He still has flair and enthusiasm and I think he's the best winger we've got at the moment. Hopefully Anderson will live up that! From what I've seen Anderson can pass a ball incredibly well and puts his crosses where he wants them, just needs to get on the ball more and work harder off the ball.

I believe in you, Carlos. You're our 20 goal a season man.

Carlos is a joke, all the support the club gave him when he got caught driving without a licence (twice) and then tried to lie his way out of it. How did he pay us back, by travelling to the Caribbean for a footballing holiday (for a friendly) during last season when we still weren't safe! How is this guy still captain of our club.?
