McGoldrick Impressed With Summer Additions
Saturday, 17th Aug 2013 06:00

Town striker David McGoldrick is impressed with the players that manager Mick McCarthy has added to the squad since the end of last season.

McCarthy may not have been able to splash the cash available to some of his fellow bosses but McGoldrick likes the look of his new midfield recruits.

The ex-Nottingham Forest player said: “Cole Skuse has come into the club and he’s a great footballer. He passes it around and we link up when I drop into the hole.

“Jay Tabb is a little warrior who likes to get to the by-line and dink the ball back for me and big Murph. It’s early days but there are definitely assists — and probably a few goals as well — from the midfield.”

McGoldrick has no doubts that Town boast sufficient creativity and firepower to make their mark in the Championship this season.

He added: “Cole has come in and the boys appreciated what he had to offer straight away. Luke Hyam is getting forward more and more so I imagine he will chip in with a few more goals this season.

“Tabby has already got off the mark and I played with Paul Anderson at Nottingham Forest so I know he gets among the goals too. You saw at the weekend for our third goal against Millwall how he gets across his man.

“As for the strikers, Paul Taylor is a great player and we have seen signs of it, while big Frank [Nouble] is a handful, a young lad who is a good player with a lot to offer. You add me and Murph and there is definitely firepower there. But we can’t just say it — it needs to happen.”

McGoldrick, who arrived on loan from Forest in January, signed a two-year deal in the summer that had already been verbally agreed but could not be completed in writing until his City Ground contract had expired.

He said: “When I joined on loan I regarded it the same as being a permanent signing. There was a deal in place and it was always going to happen. That helped me with regard to settling in straight away.

“When I came back in the summer there were a lot of new faces and it made me feel like I’d been here longer than I actually had.”

I would like to see taylor in the team, that means dropping McGoldrick as he is woeful in the air, he did not win one header last saturday, not even the free ones. With Micks brand of football you need someone to present an ariel challenge up front and McGoldrick is not that threat. great with the ball at his feet though.....COYB

McGoldrick is a more intelligent footballer than Murphy and Nouble put together. he brings people in to the game, works the channels far better then these two, holds the ball up extremely well, takes defenders out of position and is a more natural finisher. If he is fit then along with Chambers and Smith then he is one of the first three names on the team sheet for me.

Im sorry to say i think you're very much mistaken if you think hyam will be amongst the goals. He has only scored 1 goal in a town shirt!!! Not that kind of player im afraid. A good defensive, holding midfielder yes, a box to box, attacking, creative midfielder sadly not. However im confident there are goals in the team, could do with another striker tho in my opinion

@jimmy86 Hyam was a box to box player against Millwall and got in some good positions and think goals will come from him this year
