McCarthy: Should Have Put Them to The Sword
Saturday, 24th Aug 2013 19:13

Boss Mick McCarthy was disappointed that his side didn’t finish Leeds off when they were ahead and on top in the first half and with the visitors’ winning goal just after half-time. Keeper Scott Loach held his hands up to making an error on Ross McCormack’s distance strike which beat him down to his right.

The Blues were hugely impressive in the first 20 minutes during which time David McGoldrick put them in front and McCarthy felt his team ought to have secured the three points during that spell: “You’ve got to make the most of it and put them to the sword when you’re playing as well as that, and I thought we could have done.

“Cressy hit the bar, then they got a fortuitous break. [Luke Varney]’s got to finish it and he finished it well, but I don’t think the [initial] shot’s ever going to trouble Loachy and it bounces into Varney’s path and he scores.

“It changed the course of the game, it was a bit more even after that. Then their second is a really poor one, that gave them something to hang on to, changed the course of the game and maybe how people felt on the pitch.”

He added: “They’ve got some good, experienced players. I thought their front two and McCormack were a real handful, although I thought in the first half we dealt with it fairly comfortably.

“They’ve got good experience in there and I thought they defended doggedly and defended well. But we had our chances even in the second half.

“We had enough corners if we’d had good enough delivery, if we’d got something on the end of them. But it was disappointing, of course.”

McCarthy said keeper Loach held his hands up to the error: “He came in and apologised and coughed it.

“If he had come in and said it was a deflection I might have had a different view on it. He should have saved it, he knows he should have saved it, no point dancing around the issue, it shouldn’t be in our net.

“For all the other bits that should have been repaired there, that shouldn’t have gone in our net.”

McCarthy was able to take some positives from the defeat: “I know what the good things were in the game, the start and the way we played.

“They’re a great bunch of lads, but it never feels like there are any pleasing aspects when you’ve just been beaten at home, or away from home.

“We needed to win that game or certainly not get beaten in it. That goal that they got from a lucky deflection, unlucky on our part, and it ends up as 1-1, so be it, but we shouldn’t concede that second poor goal. Right from us giving the ball away to it ending up in the net it was just poor.”

The Town boss felt full-backs Aaron Cresswell and Elliott Hewitt had done well before the break but that his side didn’t make the most of their threat: “If you analyse the way they’re playing, they’re playing a diamond and they’re playing very narrow.

“There’s width on the outside and the width on the outside comes from your full-backs and if you’ve got full-backs that can get forward with the energy of Cressy and Elliott, who I thought was good in the first half going forward, that’s where the room is.

“Tactically, if you know that, that’s where we’re going to get a bit of joy. And we did but we didn’t make them pay.”

Leeds boss Brian McDermott admitted his side was very much second best in the early part of the game: “First 20 or 25 minutes they were on top and they’ve scored and they could have scored again when they hit the post.

“Then we got ourselves back into it. We had to change our shape in the second half and I thought we got to grips with it and we’ve got a quality player who scored a quality goal.

“We then threw our bodies on the line at the end with lots of corners coming in. I thought we were decent value for an away team to get the result.”

Didn't we bring in Keane and Jewell in to fend off relegation. I think they both did the job. What did they do after that initial 'success'?

When McCarthy was made manager my heart sank. He did the job that was needed last season to keep us in the division but God do we have to put up with this utter crxp. Admission prices are iniquitous, the entertainment nil and does any one understand what the xxxx he talks about. He has cobbled together a side of misfits it seems, OK maybe there is no money but why let people go who might just entertain or do something out of the ordinary and win a match for us. I think MM is summed up when he talks about clattering the goal keeper, the football is from the dark ages. As a tactician and coach unless it's belting the ball up field he really is dire. Bring back John Duncan.

Pinstripe blue - keane wasn't brought into fend off relegation. Jean excess brought in on the back of out best championship finish in the last 8 years! Keane never had initial success or any success for that matter...

Also think that's quite harsh hegansheroes. I'd hardly say this side or the mentality is from the dark ages! I'd say this first 11 is carrying three or four players at the moment and that's it. How can you not understand what mick talks about? It's pretty straight down the line and direct!

Couple of season long loan signings before the window closes and a reshuffle against the Brum is all we need. Edwards, Hyam and Murphy to make way for Taylor, Tunnicliffe and Nouble for me. Unless we sign Doyle that is! He's 6ft, mick likes a big man up front. McGoldrick and Doyle? Like the look of that!

Keaneish ,Doyle is to similar to McGoldrick , movement , hold up play etc. We need pace coming off McGoldrick in my opinion.

Lukrybluey, you mean you want Joe Royle in charge? Where we concede 2-3 but score 4-5? That would do for me!

I've confidence that MM will make a turnaround of this poor start to the season but we need a better keeper than Loach, I didn't rate him last year and I don't rate him now. Being a Town fan is not enough, bring Hendo back, if only on loan please.
Also drop Hyam, Edwards and Murphy and I say go 532, bringing Berra, Wordsworth and Nouble/Taylor in.
We need 3 players, a GK, CM (playmaker) and a striker.

Think you all have it wrong, for the first goal Hewitt for the 3rd time in as many minutes had 2 men to mark with Edwards playing to centrally. This gave Leeds the space for the first goal, on the second our players did not close down Leeds enabling them to shoot and score.

We did not seem to want the ball in the second half, we need a goal scoring centre forward to play along side McGoldrick. If that 2nd goal had gone in we would be writing a different story this morning because Leeds were nothing special.

In the past I have been criticised for my opinions on Loach, well thankfully it seems people are beginning to realise the bloke is just not good enough. Its not all down to him of course but how many crosses has he caught since he has been here - answer very few. We need Henderson back and although I know unlikely Stearman as well as Hewitt still has much to learn and was another weak link along with Edwards. The winning goal was a joke with 3 mistakes culminating in a woeful attempt by Loach to save it. Sadly Hyam and Skuse just does not work either as there is no creatvity and very little service to the front men. All very worrying when we were all so optimistic pre season. Can Mick turn it around - I think he can but he needs to sort something this week as what we have does not look good enough at the moment - will it change - I hope so as at the moment my weekends are miserable.

If only, five minutes into the game Tabb hadn't tried to claim a goal for himself, by interfering from an off side position with Mc Goldrick's goal bound shot, this entire debate might have a far more Rose- tinted hue. To then be Two/ Nil up after fifteen minutes would have altered the entire game.

Alan Lee would have done more than Murphy today, looked really sharp at the open day!
Need Nouble or Taylor to start next weekwith McGoldrick, as we need to start scoring or we will be back in the bottom three ! Signing Billy Sharp and Stearman needed to turn our season round before its too late yet again !

If we hadn't played cack in the second half against Reading, if we had defended for the whole 90 minutes against qpr, if we wernt completely dire against Stevenage........if, if, if........hardly a valid point is it?

Agree debenture Dave . Billy Sharp out of favour at Southampton but on big wages and Stearman been doing well ( all be it at centre back) for Wolves, would they sell him?

Fair point bluefeast but I'd get Doyle in anyway as he can play on the left. If we had any cash we'd be smart to move for Tomlin. It's the loan market for us though.

In truth we need a couple more players, the squad is only 20 strong.

I'm just going to say that I'm gutted. But then again I've said that after every game this season, apart from the millwall game of course!

Tunnicliffe needs to start. End of. He has a passion which shows in his game

I believe Mick will turn this around and once we do get going we will be hard to beat, the potential is there. However I think we slipped up big time last season by letting DJ Campbell go, I think if we could have afforded to sign him we would be doing much better.

I wish Bluebert could tell me where you can buy tickets to watch Man Utd for £31. I have just looked online at the prices for next week's game against Crystal Palace, the cheapest I can find is £69. Not I hasten to add that I have any intention of going, even at £31.

For me we need a commanding keeper because Loach is not any where near one.

Edwards needs to be paid off because he is holding the team back because he contributes absolutely nothing.

I do not give a rats backside that Hyam is a 'local' boy he is not up to the game at the moment. Needs time to up his skill levels. Tunnicliffe needs to be in the side next week and so does Anderson. MM and TC need to bust a gut to get Taylor match fit because him and McGoldrick up front will cause lots of problems for defences.

Need to find a place for Berra but not sure where. Maybe we should go to 3 at the back and MM please go out and get Henderson back - ASAP!!!!!

Finally I still think we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season

I can tell you something - if we end up losing Cressy on the last day of the transfer window i'm cancelling my direct debit.

The positives side tells me that we have a small squad but a squad that all want to play for us and not just command lots of money like several others now departed.
The negative side of me tells me that you get what you pay for.
Much as I would really like to see Mick's budget team do well, I fear that will not be the case.
Unless we are able to spend on a couple of quality players we shall most likely drift along in mid table with very little to play for.
Not really exciting stuff and certainly unlikely to get the turnstiles moving more often.

Fact is this squad is unfortunately not good enough to mount a top 6 challenge. I feel sorry for mick because he has had his hands tied and not been backed properly by evans. Which brings me to my next point, what has evans done for this club?! He didnt pay the debt off, he put it in his name, which means we now owe him. He has also doubled the debt. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys and to only spend 20k is pathetic despite ffp!!! And to charge 39.50 is also disgracefull. Glad i got a season ticket. Back ya manager evans or sell up

I suspect when Smith goes off on his next NZ international jaunt again, Berra will come in at CB and that will be that for Smith.

Once fit , I cant see any player at the Club ousting Berra from CB .

agree with bluebet re the ticket prices
cost me 70 quid just to get me and my 7 and 8 year old lads into the ground
after grub programme etc not much change from a 100

I though we were just unlucky yesterday but am happy enough with the team altough i think we need to play with out and out wingers if we are to play skuse and hyam together.
lets get behind the team as we will do ok this year in the end

I agree with posts re Loach is not good enough i said from the start he is a liability Edwards is not up to it at the moment anyway and has not been from the start of this season so why is he in the team week in week out Anderson needs to start with Tunnicliffe and woody needs to be on the bench at least so it gives the option to bring him on for Hyam then perhaps things may look more positive also Taylor is needed at some point soon imo
