Chambers Proud to Wear Armband
Friday, 27th Sep 2013 06:01

Luke Chambers has spoken of his pride at captaining Town while regular skipper Carlos Edwards has been out of the side, but admits he is not a fan of the pre-match huddle.

Chambers said: “The gaffer has given me the job and it’s something I’ve done throughout my career, so it’s not anything new.

“It’s always a great honour, especially captaining a side like Ipswich with the history they’ve got. It was the same when I was at Forest and I’ve been very lucky in my career to captain two massive clubs.

"I feel I’m doing a fairly good job at it and if the opportunity arises I’ll happily continue to do it.

“While I’ve been captain this season I don’t think we’ve done too many huddles. I think talk is cheap at that time of the day. Everything has been said that needs to be said. If we’re not ready at that point and my words are going to inspire people…I’m not really sure that has to be done to be honest.”

Meanwhile, Chambers has admitted he would consider extending his present contract, which expires in June 2015, because he loves life in Suffolk.

He added: “I’m very, very much enjoying my football and I very much enjoy living in the area so if that opportunity arose I’d be 100 per cent in favour.

“I’m really, really enjoying myself and if we continue to do well, continue to perform the way I know we can and the manager stays then it’s something that I would definitely look at doing.”

With the necessary paperwork completed Chambers is also hoping to graduate to senior international football with his adopted Republic of Ireland.

He said: “They approached me a couple of years ago and it has come up again now. It’s not me going out begging for a call-up. I’ve had my Irish passport now for two years.

“They approached me to apply for it and I did, so if things happen down the line, great, but at the minute I’m just fully concentrated on Ipswich climbing the Championship.

“I qualify through my grandfather on my mum’s side — he’s a proper Irish boy! The gaffer has known about it for a while but I didn’t really make a big thing of it and I still don’t want to.

“Every time I read that I’ve said I want to play for Ireland I think I don’t want to make too much of it. For me it’s an option if they want me to go and play for them.”

A far better choice of captain than Carlos imo who I is far too laid back to be the regular captain.

Don't waste your time playing for a country with which you have only a tenuous connection, although I can see that in some cases it can be career-advancing e.g. Matt Holland.

In my opinion need to get him signed up on a new long term deal, hasnt been one for moving clubs too much and is a real asset to the club!! Real tidy player

I'd like to see him given the armband no matter if Carlos plays or not. Although I think Mick don't want the fuzz with changing captain and perhaps unsettling Carlos, who knows.
Not the daftest of ideas

What a ridiculous statement Radlett. Should that apply to all sport? Rugby?? Cricket???
Career advancing Matt Holland? How very disrespectful to one of the most honest and genuine players to ever play for Ipswich or Ireland.

The last 3 reports about Luke Chambers are verbatim to that in todays EADT except the bit about Ireland.
Interesting that when he is talking about signing new contract mentions that he is happy to do this if Manager stays!Does he know something we dont?
