McCarthy: No FAI Meeting
Saturday, 26th Oct 2013 18:14

Town boss Mick McCarthy has dismissed reports that he is set to meet FAI headhunters Ray Houghton and Ruud Dokter next week.

Asked whether if he had anything more to say about the Republic of Ireland manager’s job, he retorted: “I haven’t said anything about the Republic of Ireland job.”

Any contact regarding the job? “Yeah, they came and stayed with me last night at the hotel, all of them. I had a good meeting with them,” he quipped. “Did I bollocks! No, nothing.

Quizzed on reports he is due to meet FAI pair Houghton and Dokter on Monday, he added: “Somebody better book me a f------ flight then!

“I’ll tell you where I am on Monday. I’m at a signing session at the David Lloyd [gym] down in Ipswich at 10.30.

“I’ll be in the training ground at a quarter to seven. Me and TC will be watching the game again. If you all want to come down and have a chat with me then at a quarter to seven, please feel free.

“Then we’ve got a game with the Nike Academy and I’ll be involved with that. And then I’m flying to Ireland!” he joked.

All very amusing, but is the big fella digging himself a hole? I mean I would never say someone should not go for an international job, but after all this fandango and these non-comments, if he were to get the job and take it, I could understand why Town fans might turn on him. The real people to blame though are the FAI and the media.

Even when he's talking about leaving us, you have to laugh at what he says. We all need this distraction dealt with quickly.

I expect MM is really bored with this.Let's hope Martin O'Neill takes the job next week, then we can all concentrate on ITFC and what a great job MM has done so far, taking us from relegation certainties to possible play off contenders in just 12 months without spending any money of note.

jimmy juan. don't agree that this the faukt of the fai and media at all. as at the end of the day, mm could have ended all the speculation by doing what others have done and ruled himself out. but he hasn't, and wont because he wants it. don't blame him for that as its his adopted country but he should simply be honest about it instaed of hiding behind saying he cant comment on speculation. others did, so why not him?

I think MM is taking the P**s. He reminds me of an arrogant mercenary …...and actually MM, despite you talking up a Play Off campaign this year, all you have produced is mid table mediocrity. Yes, you saved us last year, yes its true, and we will always be grateful for that; but what's the plan now? Are you just using last years success for attracting a better offer for yourself? Come off the fence and commit yourself to ITFC …. the fans deserve a committed manager.

Of course he could have ruled himself out of the Irish job but only if he really didn't want it. I think it's clear he does want it, but like anyone considering a career move, he wants to be certain that the terms and conditions are right. If the FAI come up with the right package MM will be gone. But until that time comes why the implied (or not so implied) criticism? And why does everyone think it so wrong to want to be considered for another job? The average job in football management lasts less than two years and an international team job with a guaranteed 4 year contract to the 2018 World Cup would appeal to most managers. The whisper machine on this forum is already spreading the message that he is not up to managing us, that he can't provide us with stylish football and that he is tactically inept. To some people it might look like a self fulfilling prophesy; we think he's on his way, so he must go, and we can't bring ourselves to believe that there is a different end to this particular story.

I say give the guy a break; he is doing a job for us at the moment and his approval rating amongst most fans must be at the higher end of the scale. At the end of the day he will leave the Ipswich job either because he wants to or because he is sacked. Why pillory the man because there might be an alternative to the latter?

blues041273. that was my point. he clearly wants it. so why not just say hes interested rather than say he cant comment on speculation. hes taking us fans for fools. I, for 1, am not falling for it. and nor are most including u it seems

my feeling is the fAI are looking to O'Neil.....O'Neil is looking for a club job preferably and may stall on a deal with the Irish until after january once the usual round of managerial sackings have been completed...... If O'Neil does not become Irish manager then I would expect Mick to be installed in June next year before the world cup finals begin.

Then we look to rebuild for next season with a new man at the helm....unless we get promoted this year then Mick i think would stay for at little while longer.

It is a little unsettling at the moment but thats the modern game....if he goes he goes, we will always be here, we get a new manager and go again!

The level of complacency on here is unreal. We haven't finished in the top half of this league since 2008/09....when ME sacked Jim straight after beating the Budgies and effectively relegating them. And replacing him with Keane. We all know what happened next!

Mick has spent virtually no money on transfers since he arrived, totally overhauled the squad and managed to save us from certain relegation. Plus he doesn't talk utter guff like his two predecessors. Why should Mick respond to gossip in the media? For crying out loud folks, give the guy some respect!

And for everyone slating him / the team last week for the Burnley result. Anyone see their score today? We are where we are, but we'd be in a whole lot more trouble Mick and Terry's common sense and nous!

he might just want to be asked so he can boast to roy keane that he got offered the job first.

We are not in disagreement here. The point I was trying to make was that he could rule himself OUT of the running for the Ireland job and the fact that he has chosen not to do so tells you all you need to know. He cannot rule himself IN as he is under contract to Ipswich and can't go looking for employment elsewhere without incurring contractual penalties. Besides, what would the Ipswich faithful really think of MM if he promoted his talents in actively pursuing the job?

We can all read between the lines here. We don't need the sub text to be highlighted in fluorescent yellow and underlined in red. As said before let's just leave him to do the job he is paid to do and leave the future to the FAI. He may be the favourite for the job, but the FAI have not yet definitively indicated that he is their preferred target. All this type of discussion achieves is a) demean MM's achievements to date and b) de-rail any future progress.

But I agree that we all understand what the situation is and that the sooner clarity comes, the better.

Blues 041273. Agreed. That was part of my point earlier which blues 1 took exception to. The speculation is not helpful, and now there is another article on here which says the FAI may be trying to fuel the speculation. I hope blues 1 reads that. I have said before it is understandable that MM might fancy an international job again. Lots of us strive for a job at a higher level. The damage as you say is in the speculation and how long drawn out the saga is.
