Woody Not Out of Favour Tuesday, 29th Oct 2013 06:00
Boss Mick McCarthy says midfielder Anthony Wordsworth is still very much in his plans despite having missed out on a place on the first team bench in recent matches and also having been left out of the U21s side which drew 1-1 with Bristol City last week.
McCarthy, who bought the 24-year-old from Colchester for £100,000 in January, says Wordsworth has dropped out of the matchday squad to allow Jack Marriott to come into the 18.
“I’ve just put another striker on the bench, so somebody had to sit out for it,” he said. “I’ve got Tabby and Tunners and I’ve got midfield players on [the field].
“He played in the U21 game the week before, so we just gave him some extra work in terms of physical work. It’s worked well. He’s not out of favour for any reason, I just wanted to put somebody else on the bench.”
The Blues boss says Wordsworth, who has scored one goal in two starts and seven sub appearances for Town, two of the latter this season, was unlucky to miss out on last week’s U21 match: “I can only play three [outfield] overage players.
“Carlos didn’t play against Millwall [in the previous week’s U21 match] and nor did Tabby. Frank did, but Frank is the next in line to play.
“So, if you analyse that, the ones that really needed to play, needed to have 90 minutes, were Carlos, Tabby and Frank because he’s the first port of call.
“Murph’s had a bit of a groin problem, if he’s not playing, Frank’s my next shout. Woody isn’t really. He’s got to make himself that, hasn’t he? But he’s had a couple of double sessions and worked hard.”

So why should Nouble be next in line to replace Murphy every game i am sure Marriott would do a much better job and bring something different to the team instead of being so predicable as would Woddy so drop Nouble out of the squad and bring in Woddy with Marriot as well but it might not happen for a month or two seems like Mick likes to work in slow motion, hoping to see a slick attacking game on Friday against Barnsley but we will most likely play for a draw and hope to sneak a winner
I am a big fan of 'Woody' and on ability and general commitment and play, don't understand why he isn't playing in the team more (except there are several midfielders competing). So far he hasn't played much for Town but when he does play I think Town play better. I want to see him in the team regularly. It seems lots of people are asking for more creativity in Town side and imho Woody is more creative than the other Town midfielders and deserves to play more. Please let him play more Mick... :-)
When Taylor comes back Marriott is going to be sent out on loan and Taylor will take his place on the bench, so Wordsworth is still not going to be involved unless there is an injury to another midfield player.
The Doctor. You suggest Wordsworth might not be training well. If you remember when MM signed him there was a lot of talk about him being lazy or having a lazy attitude. His previous coach, who was then at Bristol City, spoke about it and said he definitely was not lazy and backed him as a very good player. The probability is that MM cannot see past the attitude just as he seems totally unable to see past his favourites
As someone who follows the fortunes of Colchester (alas only by way of papers,tv and the odd game ) nowadays as can only afford to follow itfc just & also works with col utd fans, unfortunately wordsworth is every thing mick loathes..creative, pick a pass from midfield and weigh in with more than his fair share of goals but also lazy (aka jet ) seems like we may not see him in the near future !!
McCarthy wasn't too impressed with the way his team played at Bolton;but will he change it for the first time in some 7 games,I doubt it.Would be nice to see a change of formation occasionally as well just to keep opposition Managers on their toes as they hardly need bothering to send scouts to watch as they know how Mick sets his team up which hardly changes regardless of circumstances
It great reading comments from so called fans who have been to one or two matches in the life . Why don't you leave MM to pick the team as his the manager! and start going to games your pathetic.
MM has to start being more flexible in the way the team is set up. Bolton had already worked out the obvious before the game started on Saturday - all our attacks come down the left hand side and we offer little or nothing down the right. They filled their right hand side and largely negated the threat of Cresswell et al.
Same old story on Friday I suspect. If Barnsley do the same we will again struggle. I think Chambers is great, but he is no more a right back than Carlos. Bring back Hewitt to give us more going forward down the right.
Like many on here I can't understand why Wordsworth doesn't get a run out. As for big Frank, he is JET without the firepower.
4-1 to Town on Friday DMc on the score sheet again
Blue moon I see you're spouting off the same naieve dribble you have done previously. What makes you think people dont go to games?! Think theres only 1 person thats pathetic.....
We want you back Woody! Our most creative player by far, I hope you're reading these comments, it's obvious which posts come from fans who go to the games though!
He's proven he can get goals - if he starts - when he played against 'boro last year he had a couple of great chances, was really busy in the pre-season against Colchester! Play him MM and he'll do well for us, I'm sure of it - mind you, maybe if we'd have stuck with hat-trick hero JET . . .
Am I missing something? Everyone keeps saying 'he's our most creative midfielder/player' but on the few patches he's played for us in between injuries and substitute appearances I haven't seen too many signs of that. Are people basing this on his time at Col U!?
We are not going to see creative, passing football, formation changes and flair under this manager, so stop calling for it. Fans are split between those who want to see attractive football with an element of risk and MMites who are quite happy to pay good money to watch a 4-4-2 'grind outs' with the aim of being a solid mid table side. I know which side I fall on....
When he came on second half against Hull last season he did a pretty good job I felt, he scored but then made a mess of a corner and they scored from the resulting cross, but what I saw of him he did ok.
