Town striker David McGoldrick has praised partner Daryl Murphy and welcomed Paul Taylor back to the club after his seven-game loan spell at former club Peterborough.

Taylor, who suffered a long-term injury soon after his £1.5 million move from Posh in August last year, returned from his spell back at London Road last week and came on as a sub in Friday's 1-1 draw with Barnsley.

McGoldrick said: “Tayls is a very gifted player and it couldn’t have been easy for him to be out for a year. People seem to think you can come back and find your form straight away but it’s not possible.

“He’s been away at Peterborough and he’s got the games he needed, no matter whether he scored or he didn’t. That was the most important thing for him. He’s back here now and he has looked really sharp in training.

"He will give us something different. The one thing I’ve noticed about Tayls is that he is always making things happen. He’s got great close control, a powerful shot and he can twist and turn. Since coming back he looks a yard quicker and it’s great to have him back with us.”

But McGoldrick is in no hurry to see his partnership with Murphy come to a halt, although he knows Taylor, Frank Nouble, Alan Lee and Jack Marriott are all contenders for places in Mick McCarthy’s side.

He added: “I love playing up front with Daryl. I was delighted for him when he scored his two goals at Derby because he works so hard and does all the horrible work.

"A lot of my goals are from Murph’s flick-ons — like against Leeds and Brighton — and if I had to do that job I wouldn’t be scoring as many goals myself.

“I respect Murph for the job he does and I like playing up front with him. I think I work well alongside him but I also like Frank, Paul, Alan and Jack — they are all good players who are itching to play.”

Six-goal top scorer McGoldrick admitted he does not take his starting place for granted when asked if he and Taylor might be capable of forming a deadly double act.

He added: “You need to try things to see. Paul is a very intelligent player and I think I’m quite intelligent too. If you put intelligent players together it works sometimes.

“You have to see on the pitch because it’s completely different between training and a match day, but I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work.

“Obviously, Tayls has got to get himself into the team and when he does he might take my place, so I’ve got to make sure I stay in as well.

“Murph is a good player and Frank came on at Bolton. The boys were saying he was in beast mode and he did really well when he came on.

“Paul could take anyone’s place so I’m not worried about playing with him, I’m more concerned with making sure I keep my place in the side.

“Tayls is a naturally gifted player who can play anywhere. He can play wide — I don’t know if he likes playing there — or even central midfield because he’s so gifted. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

When he came in for barnsley i think he showed more in 10 mins than others did for the whole of the second half!!! What summed it up for me is when hyam of all people went for the same ball as taylor!!! And we all know hyam is one of the least creative players in the team. Id like to see 3 5 2 or 4 3 3 but thats wishfull thinking

yorksblue added 09:31 - Nov 7 I want to see some aggression up front, unlike the powder puff effort in 2nd half vs Barnsley. It's time to dust off Alan Lee and make us look like a strike force that'll worry defences. McGoldrick will still get the flick ons, as with Murphy, but Lee will win the aerial battles and put himself in where it hurts. We're far too light weight for my liking.

SouperJim added 09:57 - Nov 7 I read quite a bit of debate about formations, but for me it's the players in the formation that make it a success or failure. 4-4-2 is still an effective system but our midfield is just far too defensively minded. 2 holding players and 2 "wide men" who are both effort players is not working, the approach is far too negative and we end up having to play hopeful long balls as a result. I'd like to see one of the holding players gone and while it would be very harsh to drop him, Hyam is the weaker of the two. Tunnicliffe has looked the pick of the rest of our midfield so why not put him in the center and make use of at least one attacking option out wide, Edwards is more forward thinking than Anderson but is still an asset when we need to defend. Alternatively we know Murphy can do the Scowcroft role on the left side which would make room in the side for Taylor. Come on Mick, shake it up a bit at Blackpool please!

Michael11 added 11:15 - Nov 7 I'd like to see Taylor start but i don't think he'll do well for us unless Mick moves from his constant 4-4-2. Whether we're winning, losing or drawing, he never changes it. Tactically, we're so predictable to play against. By the looks of things, Mick will use him as a right winger too, which isn't his natural position.
