Chambers Happy to Do Job For the Team
Friday, 13th Dec 2013 06:02

Luke Chambers insists he has no plans to talk to manager Mick McCarthy about resuming his role in the heart of the Town defence.

Chambers has been filling in at right-back since McCarthy reshuffled his pack at the end of August, introducing Christophe Berra to partner Tommy Smith in a new-look back four.

Asked if he still considered himself to be a central defender playing temporarily at full-back, or if he now regarded himself first and foremost as a right-back, Chambers smiled and said: “I think we all know the answer to that.

“As long as we are doing well, and my own performances are good enough to enable me to stay in the team, all well and good.

"I think everyone knows what sort of character I am — I’m a lad who plays for the team — and if the gaffer needs me to continue playing there and everyone’s happy with that I will carry on. But, yes, I’d love to be back in the middle.”

But Chambers has no plans to broach the subject with McCarthy, adding: “I think I’d be silly to do that because we’ve won four of our last five games, including three in a row, and I don’t think we need to change too many things.

“The back four has settled itself down and obviously Deano [Dean Gerken] has done well since he’s come in. We know each other’s roles at the minute and we’re obviously building game by game.

“Tommy and Christophe have done very, very well in there and I’m getting a relationship with Christophe on my side, so we can carry on unless we bring someone else in. If I’m playing I’m happy.”

A real player who is passionate about the club and just wants to win. One of the best attitudes from a player we have had for years.

Totally agree, Chambers always seems to say the right things at the right times, a real fans favourite and doing a decent job too.

He was incredible alongside Smith at the end of last season and we shouldn't forget that, because although he's doing well at RB, it's clearly not his favourite position.

Top bloke, superb pro. Credit to the club.

My favourite player by a country mile, as previous posters have alluded to he has a great attitude and is a great pro and an all round decent guy. He isn't primarily a right back, as we all know but has been shunted out there to accomodate berra. Chambo hasn't thrown his toys out of the pram he has played to the best of his ability and has done a job for the team. He is great with the fans with his fist pump and just shows passion for the shirt. Extend his contract!!!

Glad everyone is being so positive here. I've read so many moany comments about how he's 'not a natural right-back', etc. From the games I've seen so far this year, he's been fine. A settled back four is an essential building-block to any side and I'm glad we have that back RIGHT now (terrible pun).
