Tunnicliffe Joins Wigan
Tuesday, 25th Feb 2014 16:21

Former Blues loanee Ryan Tunnicliffe has joined Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season.

Town boss Mick McCarthy was keen to bring the 21-year-old back to Portman Road from Fulham, his previous spell having been cut short at the end of January when he was sold to the Cottagers by Manchester United.

Over the weekend, both the Blues and Latics had been given permission to speak to Tunnicliffe, who made 24 Town starts and five sub appearances without scoring during the first half of the season.

Wigan manager Uwe Rosler says he sees Tunnicliffe as a replacement for Ben Watson, who recently suffered a broken leg: "Ryan is a very promising prospect player who has experience in the Championship, and after we lost Ben, I am delighted we have got someone who is so football-educated, having come through the ranks at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.

"He is a different type of player from Ben but will definitely add a new dimension to us."

Tunnicliffe says he is looking forward to helping the Latics reach the play-offs: “It’s an exciting new chapter in my career, the new manager at Fulham has allowed me to come here on loan and my aim is to just get out there and play as many games as I possibly can.

“I’m hoping to add a few more to the 60 or so games I’ve played so far at this level and I’m hungry to help the team achieve its aims.

“Being a North West lad I recognise that it’s a great time to be here, especially with the play-off push on right now and I’m just looking forward to playing.

“I know the surroundings at the DW Stadium already having played here for Ipswich earlier on in the season.

“I’m fortunate enough to have played here and got a feel for the place before arriving at the club and I could sense back then that it was a good environment.”

Just put green in the middle and give anderson a run of games on the right

I think Green instead of Tunnicliffe is a slightly better bet to be honest.
Bit of a kick in the teeth to go to Wigan but sh@t happens!

I don't think this is a problem, I think we were all a bit surprised by his move to the Prem. Totally agree Brazilnuts, ando on the right, hunt on the left....Green and Skuse in the middle. Play people in positions, simple.

Football is a funny old game isnt it? Recalled from a loan, sold to Fulham to meet up with old youth team manager, starts a few games in the top tier of England, old manager leaves, new manager joins, immediately loaned out to a club in the league below.

My mate at work is a Fulham fan and actually asked me why we didnt stop it from happening!

What an odd world we play football in!

Not too bothered about this but I seem to recall some rule. about not playing for 3 clubs in 1 season - or am I dreaming it?

We only have SSN's word that MM was actually interested in re-signing him. I don't think there was any official word from Fulham or from MM. Didn't MM sign Green to replace Tunnicliffe?

the only benefit of resigning tunnicliffe would have been to get Tabb out of the team. If MM opens his eyes and realises that the smartest thing to do would be to get Tabb and Nouble out of the team and experiment with other players who havent had much of a chance this year we might see a few exciting displays and results before the end of the season. not really got much to play for now so come on mick shake things up!!!

Just great ! Good luck Ryan ... Losing patience now .. We obviously don't have the appeal factor anymore. Never thought I would see the like !! It's like treading stagnant water .. Oh dear!!!

Exactly as I had expected, why have I become so pessimistic lately ? I wonder if he had any choice in the matter as I believed that he was happy with us !

No problem for Ipswich?? We have the potential already there and i have a sneaky feeling MM will sign someone far better (No disrespect to Tunners) and with the footballing experience and knowledge. Were perfectly fine with out him.

Hmm, seem to remember him saying in an Ipswich Player interview that he wouldn't go to another Championship Club because he was loyal.

How can people judge Green after a single game. Don't know how these "fans" expect players to ever get on at a club where the fans do nothing but judge quickly and moan.

That's a real surprise that is!

elizabeth. what the hell are you on about? we don't need him. we signed green to replace him, who, once match fit, and played in his correct position will do well for us. tunnicliffe wasn't that good neway, plus, is there really any point in loaning players at this point. we're not going up, or down. so lets just play the players we have to the end of the season, save the money, and strengthen in the summer. its nothing to do with us not having the appeal factor(we signed 14 players this season), its purely due to the fact that wigan is closer to his home, they are well on course for the playoffs too.
