Chambers Improving in Less-Favoured Role
Saturday, 5th Apr 2014 06:00

It may not be his preferred position but Town skipper Luke Chambers is no reluctant right-back.

Chambers has filled the role for most of the season, with Christophe Berra, Tommy Smith and Aaron Cresswell completing a back four line-up that has rarely changed throughout the current campaign.

He said: “I feel I have definitely improved. It’s not something that I’ve always wanted to do, play at right-back, and it’s no secret that I still feel my best position is at centre-half.

“But if the gaffer continues to pick me at right-back all I can do is give my all, which is what I always do and have always done since I first arrived at the club, as well as at all my previous clubs.

“I’ll just continue to try to improve and work on things. I feel I’ve got better as a one-v-one defender in wide areas. It’s always difficult if we play 4-3-3 because I seem to find myself a little bit exposed.

“But the gaffer must feel I’m doing a good enough job if he continues to pick me in the side. I will carry on working as hard as I possibly can to try to improve and at the moment it’s not been as bad as I thought it might be.”

Chambers accepts it would be difficult for him to dislodge the Berra-Smith double act which, in addition to excelling in their defensive duties, has also contributed an impressive tally of ten Championship goals this season. He added: “That pleases me because if they are playing well it means the side is playing well.”

Meanwhile, Chambers would welcome the captaincy on a permanent basis if, as seems likely, Carlos Edwards moves on when his current deal expires in the summer.

Chambers, who has skippered Town while club captain Edwards has been out of favour, said: “It’s a great honour for me to captain a club like Ipswich and the gaffer obviously feels I’m suited to the role.

“It’s been great and Carlos has been a brilliant servant to the club. We don’t know what’s going to happen with him but every time he has been called upon he has always been a top-class professional.

“He’s been great with me since I walked in the door and he’s great with everyone. He’s an example for everyone to follow and if I can do the job half as well as he’s done it I’ll be happy.”

Yep. Captain permanently from next season for me, with Smith as deputy dawg.

He can't play at RB next season, surely this has to be sorted with a proper RB? They where would Chambers play? If he is not in the side he can't be the best choice for captain. Nothing against Chambers he has done his best at RB as Edwards did before him, but neither are/were full backs.

I don't really get the argument that chambers can't play right back, think he's done really well there all season, he does get forward when he can and his delivery is good, he pops up every now and again at the far post as well. I think the problem for him is the real lack of cover he has, with either 3 in midfield or Anderson on the right who constantly comes central leaving chambers playing against 2 when the opposition wing back overlaps, he just doesn't get enough cover IMO which also limits the amount he's able to get forward.
