McCarthy Wants More Than Goals From Marriott
Tuesday, 19th Aug 2014 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he wants striker Jack Marriott to be more than just an out and out goalscorer. Yesterday, the 19-year-old joined League Two Carlisle on loan for a month,

“Jack wants to play,” McCarthy said. “He loved his time out at Woking last year, just playing. Whether there’s 500 fans, 5,000 or 50,000 there, if they’re all singing your name because you’re the goalscorer, it’s a nice feeling. Well, I think it is, I never had it!”

Marriott scored 13 goals in 23 starts during two spells in the Conference with the Cards last season with a short stint at League One Gillingham, in which he appeared only once as a brief sub, sandwiched in between.

McCarthy believes the striker is up making the step up to League Two football: “He’s capable of playing at that level and if he gets chances, he’ll score.

“We tell him that you can’t just be a goalscorer. I’ll explain that. David McGoldrick didn’t score for 11 games last year but I never considered leaving him out because he did all the other stuff.

“He held it up, he ran in channels, he came back and defended, it stuck when it went up to him and he set things up for other players.

“He was an all-round player and it wasn’t just goals that he got. And he got back to scoring goals and he was terrific.

“So, that’s what we’re saying to Jack, be the goalscorer but look at Luis Suarez, he scored all the goals but didn’t he work and do everything else?

“There are other sides to it and he’s getting there, I think he’s done well. He didn’t play at Gillingham just because of circumstances with the team, but hopefully he’ll get games at Carlisle and he’ll score some goals.”

Could the initial spell be extended? “If he does well Kav [Carlisle boss Graham Kavanagh] will want to keep him.

"If he does well and we’re not doing well and we haven’t scored goals, I’ll probably want to bring him back. But let’s see what the month brings. There’s no agenda, no plan on that at all.”

Michael Owen was just a goal scorer and he didn't do to bad.

You do need players that will defend when needed thats obvious, but I would much prefer, a lets score more than the others approach ( like Big Joe's ) than MM's lets concede less than the others approach.....COYB

From a fans point of view I would love to see an out and out goal scorer putting them away for us. I wonder if MM would contemplate lineker? Definitely experienced enough.

I do understand where he's coming from, but at the same time it's a bit daft too. Look at Jordan Rhodes for example, he can go 90 minutes without barely having a kick but then he'll score a goal that wins the game. He doesn't run the channels or hold the ball up very often but does it really matter if he scores 30 a season?

Owen played in a relatively underachiving Liverpool side- when he lost his pace (due to unfortunate injury) he diddnt have much else in his game to offer teams.

MM wants Marriott to develop the other aspects of his game so he can make the team and contribute consistantly in all games. At Championship we cant afford to carry any players if we want to seriously challenge for top 6.

MM had acknowlegded that Jack is developing well and L2 will be a good test for him to check his progress. If Jack makes the improvements to his game there is no reason why he wont be a first team player by the end of the season. The fact that MM has decided to offload Frank and Taylor while keeping Jack is a clear sign that MM & TC clearly rate his ability and his potential to make it

That makes sense Mick but dont forget he did get a few assists for Woking last season and i seem to remember their manager saying something like, he also runs the channels well!

Well that's all fine and Dandy, but we're not over blessed in the goals department, especially when you take out those scored by defenders.

If a striker can bang in a couple or three goals in a game I don't really care if he spends the rest of the time sitting in a deck chair drinking pina coladas.

Well maybe not quite that but if he was that much of a goal threat him not tracking back would mean that was at least a couple of defenders the opposition wouldn't dare to send forward.

Take MESSI for instance he does not run the channels, but he watches the game from the centre circle, then when the opportunity arise he pounces on the ball and heads for goal !!! you see little of him in a defensive role. His goal scoring record is proof enough

So were comparing jack Marriott to messi and Owen?

Really?

I like the lad and want him to succeed but if we ever gave a teenager even remotely comparable to either of them we won't have him for long......

Not necessarily a clear sign they clearly rate his ability and his potential to make it because unless they think he's not up to it (presumably they don't ...) then he's a much cheaper option than the two being allowed to leave. Economics has seemed to play a large part for a few years now.

It concerns me that MM has to point out that he's capable of making the step up to league two. I know he's one for the future but I'm wondering if its going to happen at championship level for him.

Defending from the front and applying pressure to the back 4 is the modern day forward.

Mick are we in fantasy land again? McGoldrick does "all the other stuff" cos he has to, he gets no ball from midfield so constantly has to come and collect it.....if he had somebody creative in the side he probably would have banged in 20 before he got injured last season and done far less around the park and we'd all have been happy with that!!

Every Striker is NOT the same and trying to turn everybody into McGoldrick will not only not work, but actually likely hinder some players progress in the game!! They all have different attributes and sorry for pointing out the bleedin obvious, but the remit of the job is to score goals Mick and as long as they do that, I couldn't care less what they do in the rest of the game......

Why do you insist on making everybody defensively minded, totally negative football!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

David McGoldrick came back and "defended" on saturday Mick and set up the Reading winner.

As far as i'm concerned strikers are there to put the ball in the net first - if he's a big guy then send him back to defend corners/set pieces..I can't for the life of me understand why you'd want your strikers running back into their own 18 yard box when A - they should be conserving their energy for the other end of the pitch and B - we've got 9 other players on the pitch to be doing the defending.

If you said to me that Marriott couldn't tackle to save his life but he'll stick the ball in the net 15-20 times this season then i'd take that all day...I like you Mick but there are times when you are living in the dark ages of management..goals win games, not just clean sheets.

Afcfee - I totally agree, Marriott is no where near ready for first team Championship football yet. Good luck to him though.

Marriot and also Henshall against West Ham were making premier league defenders look silly running at the with their pace and going round them, both unlucky not to get a goal each, so why not give them a chance at this level even if it is 20 minutes off the bench?

I also hate this approach from Big Mick.

It appears Big Mick wants a "Jack of All Trades". And we all know how the rest of the saying goes - "Master of f..." I wont finish that as this is a family-friendly post.

An out-and-out goalscorer is EXACTLY what we need. We are not Chelsea where all their forwards interchange, we don't have the players. We already have 9 grafters playing outfield - we can afford to carry 1 player with that.

work work work, defend defend defend and maybe the odd goal thrown in and then maybe you won't go out on loan young Jack. Really can't see this bringing again entertaining football to Portman Road this season.

Sorry jack, you have great technical ability and a sharp eye for goal but as your not 6ft tall and dont weigh 15 stone then see you later :-(

Some of you cannot see why I do not like Mick, well this is one of the reasons why! What do you want Mick, your strikers back in our penalty box trying to play as full backs and giving goals away just as happened last Saturday? I wish you would just disapperar in a puff of smoke!
