McCarthy: Further Additions Likely to Be Loans
Monday, 25th Aug 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy will weigh up whether to further add to his squad, but says he’ll not be making any “major signings” before the transfer window closes a week today.

Asked whether he’s looking to add to his squad, McCarthy said: “We’ll see. But we’ll not be going out and making any major signings.

“We’ll probably assess it afterwards and if we have to use the loan window then that’s what we’ll do.”

The Blues boss says Premier League clubs will have been holding on to their youngsters: “They wait until after the first few games and then the international break comes.

“I think some have been keeping their younger players who are excess to their squads that they would normally loan out because of World Cup commitments and people who have played there and are not ready having come back.

“You might find that there will be a few more available that we can take, if we need to.”

McCarthy will similarly assess whether to make changes to his team for next week’s trip to Derby - who beat Fulham 5-1 on Saturday - over the course of the the next few days.

“I’ll see in the week,” he said. “It’s not like I’ve got a 30-man squad to be rotating to keep everybody happy. I’ll have a look.”

Meanwhile, Town's U21s start their their Professional Development League 2 South Division campaign against Swansea City at Playford Road this afternoon (KO 1pm).

The Blues' U21s coach Mark Kennedy was spotted watching Cambridge United's 2-1 home defeat to Morecambe in League Two on Saturday.

MM doesn't get it at all. We sell Cressy and he's not saying a word about signing new players. Obviously loanees cost money but we need players for rest of season not just to Christmas! After saturday's performance I'm not intending to visit PR again until there's a real improvement in results and style. We could so easily have lost all 4 games so far so I feel we're a long way before team is mooving in right direction

MM should have loaned out skuse and hiam (but he wont because there his type of player, back pass or sideways pass) and kept taylor who runs with the ball and wordsworth who can make a forward pass.I thought sats game was the worst i have seen from our midfield and forward line.
I hate to say it but if Norwich had stepped there game up they could have had many more goals.

And why cant we purchase players from lower leagues, other teams do, we always have to have journeymen or castoffs.

Very disappointed in mm.

Staff wages = McCarthy's £1M bonus and 'well paid' salary, nobody asks what he is on? that's probably where the Cresswell money's gone on MM's wages. All too desperate start to the season although only 4 games old and yet gain financial woes rears it's ugly head.

Need to know I thought the Geezer s who took over from Clegg said mm would get Funds if and when required so whats all this ffp rot got to do with it if all the players we have got were on Frees cant work it out.

marcusevans - I am actually beginning to believe you are the genuine article!

Guthrum - Both of your posts are cohesive while detailing the clubs financial accounts so, today, I decided not to give you a negative tick. However, you do seem to be missing the point. We are discussing Ipswich Town Football Club which, as the name implies, is in the business of selling football and when you are selling you need to have something a bit special to catch the eye and encourage your supporters to come along and purchase your product and, in todays environment, catch the eye of the TV moguls so that will want you to appear on their horrible little screens and the larger company's wanting their name to appear on your shirt, etc., etc. Well to do that you need to play exciting, scintillating, football not the dour, depressing, unexciting, defensive dribble our club are presently serving up so there is little wonder that the crowds are steadily decreasing and will, in the very near future, reach an all time low. That way you will not be able to balance the books so your (closed) accountants mind will be to no avail. There is only one way forward and that is to change the type of football being played but to do that we will need to appoint a fresh Manager who will get rid of the current crop of carthorses (excluding the one on the badge), bring back the loanees and start building the team from the Academy. It will take at least three years but you just watch the crowds come back, full of enthusiasm, to support their team.

For the MM lovers - Yesterday when my post calling for MM to go ended the day it had three more pluses than negatives, that has to be set against the avalanche of negatives I received when I first posted that comment! Times are moving!

Notts tractor - people still slag off Sheepshanks as you put it because it was his arrogance which ultimately brought us to where we are today!

Initially he did fine but then he began to believe his own publicity, that he could do no wrong, and his ego began writing cheque's the club couldn't meet ultimately authorising massive expenditure which, by his own admission years ago, he took no financial advice over. Administration followed and the rest is history.

Yes the Evans era has been a complete disaster but if Sheepshanks hadn't screwed up as spectacularly as he did there would have been no need for an Evans era!!

Just going to be another dull season, why does he seem so content with not going for promotion, loans are for clubs like us with no money, the like of dos santon, Johnny Williams, dj Campbell, mark noble, they single handedly made our team better why don't we get a couple of awesome midfielders and go for it!

It is depressing when we make several summer signings and not one of them are in the starting line up. Okay, so Parr and Stewart have had injury set backs, Henshall is young, and Bru and Bajner were punts, but to see the likes of Tabb, Skuse and Anderson making up our midfield after all three were disapointing last season doesn't inspire confidence. I will forgive Hyam, as I think we need a ball winner and he could be useful with more quality around him.

It'd be little short of a miracle if we got promoted with our squad and being limited to loans and free transfers. We will have to wait a few years I'm afraid to see the results of the youth academy as that has to be the way forward.

This just gets worse, we beat a poor Fulham side, very lucky to get a point at Birmingham. These loans are not the way forward. We need to build a side with permanent signings. ME invest in players or sell up.

@marcusevans quote"Did George Burley get us promoted in a year or two? No."
but then again did George Burley play decent entertaining, creative passing football? Yes.

Lets face it this is good as it gets. Evans thought he could make a quick buck when he bought town, but his lack of knowledge of finding a good manager and backing him has backfired big time and the fans are the one what pay it. Im afraid the football club is like the town its lost its identity through bad management. Im sure if we got promotion Evans would get his money back and off load us. As much as i regret him buying the club i bet he regrets it more. Portman road has become like the town centre nothing worth looking at.

The goals we have conceded have mostly been from a series of annoying errors - that is, annoying for Mick, Terry and the players - but clearly they don't feature in the equations worked out by many on here!
Also, McGoldrick is not quite fully match fit, though he is clearly very keen to make the same difference he did last season, and has already opened his account. I certainly agree that we need more creativity in midfield, from a quality player who can go straight into the starting 11 and make an immediate impact, and would be astonished if there wasn't a loan signing to that effect.

I totally agree with all the comments about needing creative player but can anyone really believe MM is going to change his style of play. Sorry guys we are stuck with this.

Going down the Paul Jewell route with loan signings now.Whatever happened to our fabled youth section?

Firstly it is quite obvious MM does not have the money to sign anymore players. I am afraid RK wasted whatever money ME was prepared to invest.

We are now in a situation where we are relying on loans in and out of the club to make ends meet. MM's style of football will never be the most attractive to watch, it was needed the season before last when we were in dire straits. Now we risk a downward spiral of trying to live within declining income, having fewer big names, playing not very attractive football, result fewer attending matches and buying merchandise.

We need to try and break this cycle soon!

@BillBlue - thanks for that ;-)

Wile I agree with some of your sentiment regarding the need to entertain, football is not a pure entertainment business such as WWE (pretend) wrestling. It is also a sport, where winning is the most important thing. That is what will put bums on seats (fans still turned up en masse to watch Pulis' Stoke), will gain us TV coverage and ultimately, the chance to compete in the highest arena. Sadly, modern football being what it is, it's the Premiership TV money which is our best hope of breaking even (and in that league the bills go up as well). Even a full stadium every week would barely bring in enough. I find the fact that we're not winning at the moment more disturbing than the style of football we play (tho I particularly dislike the head-tennis sessions, too).

I don't agree that attendances are continuing to fall. Last season's average matched that of the season before, halting a steady decline of 1,000 to 1,500 ever since the previous high-point of 2009-10. Disregarding the Norwich game (which will always bring more fans in), this season's one home game is at the same level.

Building a team purely from the Academy will not only take years, but carries with it the risk of failing even to maintain our place in this division. Dropping another level would be disastrous and not only in the financial sphere. It also does not guarantee that the football will be any more exciting to watch. Nervous youths up against canny Champ and ex-Prem players is likely to be an even more defensive spectacle.

What has FFP got to do with the crap McCarthy is dishing up each week ? The debt we owe to Evans is also irrelevant as just a tax vehicle for him. Remember he is NOT an ITFC fan but a business man who had the sole motivation of making a few quid. Too many on here put him up as a modern day saint. Where would we be without him they ask ? After 8 years ? of being strangled by his lack of success in running the club properly we would of been better off going pop back then and by now we would be debt free and if not back in the Premiership then challenging for it. Don't get distracted by talk of our debt or annual losses as Mick has a similar budget to many in the Championship and none of that explains why he only ever plays 442, why he insists on one of the 2 forwards being a big lump, why he plays 2 DFM's both of whom have appalling goal scoring records and assist stats, why he refuses to try a back 3 despite our 3 best defenders all being CB's, why he failed to get the best out of Taylor who promised a rare attacking flair which is badly missing, or why our general lack of flair and creativity in midfield meant that all 4 defenders last season outscored all members of the midfield. He did really well to keep us up, thank you, but name me the entertaining performances our team have put in since he arrived ?? If Evans wants to demonstrate any real interest in ITFC then he should sack his lap dog and bring in someone who will bring more customers through the shop door which will increase the squad budget and help speed our journey back to where we belong. I hate reading on here all the comments from so called Town fans who say we have to accept we are a mid-table championship side. Are any of the following bigger clubs than us, Southampton, Leicester, Burnley, QPR, West Ham, Swansea, Cardiff, Hull, Sunderland, West Brom, Stoke and others too. Sir Bobby would be turning in his grave to think we are satisfied with mid table in the championship. I don't care how many minuses I get you won't see me join the happy clappy brigade who think MM and Evans are latter day saints, they ain't. Sir Alf, Sir Booby, Burley and Big Fat Joe all had bugger all to spend but still Portman Road rocked and we didn't need duffers playing drums out of time to try and create an atmosphere. Too many 14 year old key board warriers on here who know nothing of out history and who never saw the likes of Clive Woods or the first David Johnson never mind the dutch masters, Warky, Brazil Gates and Marriner. Mick we will games, most will be 1-0 and all the happy clappy lot will be back on the in Mick we trust bollocks. it's going to be a long dire season.

Everyone asking about the cresswell money obviously know nothing about football business or business at all! It is going to be paid in INSTAllMENTS! This means we don't suddenly have £3m to go towards players, I'd be surprised if we've received £300k yet. Ipswich lost over £9m last financial year, basically meaning they WOULD get a transfer ban in the ffp rules! They have to cut nearly £2m or more off the losses to make sure they comply with the regulations.

Do you bunch of moaners really think mm would be making do with freebies and loans if he could go spend £2-5m on player?? Yes players aren't good enough and we desperately need an attacking midfielder and another striker but we have to make do for now and see how the ffp kicks in in January, because if it does hit a lot of clubs spending millions, ipswich being "tight" might put us in good stead going forward for the second half of the season.

Don't lose the faith yet, back mm, tc and the team.
