Edwards: Loan Move Went to Plan
Tuesday, 9th Sep 2014 17:52

Former skipper Carlos Edwards, who will be back at Portman Road with his current club Millwall on Saturday, says last season’s loan move to the Lions went very much to plan after he had drifted out of the picture at Town.

The 35-year-old joined the Blues from Sunderland for £1.35 million in the summer of 2009 and went on to make 170 starts and 21 substitute appearances, scoring 10 goals, but had dropped out of the Town matchday 18 by the end of January.

“I don’t know what the issue was at Ipswich,” the Trinidad and Tobago international told the News Shopper.

“The manager kept saying be patient. The games were running out and I don’t know whether he wanted me to be patient with him come the last game of the season, so when the opportunity came for me to come on loan here I jumped at it.”

Edwards, whose Blues contract was up at the end of June, moved to Millwall on loan in March and the Lions were unbeaten during his eight games as they escaped relegation with the former Luton and Wrexham man - who scored one goal - largely playing at right-back.

“I didn’t just come [to Millwall] to play games,” he added. “At the same time I wanted to prolong my career and to do that I needed to play games to put myself back into the window so people could see I was still available.

“Fortunately I came here to Millwall, helped the team stay up and was offered a new [one-year] deal.

“I’ve still got a few friends at Ipswich who I will relax and chill a bit with afterwards, but Millwall is my family now.

“I’ve had great times at Ipswich, fond memories and a few bad ones, but I would thank them for all the things they have done for me on and off the pitch.”

Millwall have started the season well, they are currently fifth in the table, and Edwards, who has started every league game, says they are targeting the top six: “We did set goals for the season and [reaching the] play-offs is one of those goals, to be there come the final day of the season.

“I don’t think it is beyond us. It is going to be tough, but at the same time we have what it takes in this squad to push for something good this season.”

> “I don't know what the issue was at Ipswich,”

Probably that he is soon to turn 36 and Ipswich wanted to look to the future, bringing in the likes of Henshall. Edwards was a good servant, but can't go on forever.

As I mentioned the other day, before McCarthy came here under Jewell and Keane he was probably our most consistent midfielder quality wise, had a good engine, passer and crosser though question marks about him as a full back. Just strange that within a few months of MM being here he 'drifted out of the picture' - a coincidence or not?

Was a decent player, likeable guy and left us at the right time and glad things are working out well for him

I said it last season and i'll say it again now. How Edwards got pushed aside for Anderson was mystifying.
Age cant be blamed he's been ripping it up at Millwall in the same division he was deemed not good enough for.
Far far better player in every department.
Think it was just a case of justifying the JET/ Anderson swap if you ask me.

hahahaha! - some people are clueless, 2 people give me down marks from a genuinely honest remark about Carlos Edwards and what he brought to us on the pitch.

....... another player who had a rough time with McCarthy - played out of position for so. so long - and effectively became disillusioned here. Sounds rather familiar !!

Good for him. I liked Carlos.

Good right back, player of the year remember. Attacked from deep and defended well using his pace (defended badly at times too being out of position).

Very average winger. For the time he served and the effort and commitment he put in you could say his price tag was justified by the end, but quality wise he wasn't really, especially not in terms of what he was bought to do by Keane.

Bit sobering to think his transfer fee alone cost us £7000 per game he played....another one moved on for no return........liked him on his day...let's hope it's not a usual case of old boy coming back to haunt previously club....all the best Carlos but only after next Saturdays game

I wish Carlos well and his performances were often one of the few consolations we could salvage when travelling home from games during the Keane and Jewell years.

That said, he definitely will need watching on Saturday. He has been highly and consistently praised by Lions, and has not lost his habit of going on his trademark marauding raids late on in games, as he did to set up Millwall's equaliser at Sheffield Wednesday a few weeks ago.

suspect he was still on pretty decent wages as captain, and given his original transfer fee, even after his contract was extended. so probably just economics, his move freed up cash for joniesta.

Agree with all who say he was a loyal servant during the dark days of Keane and Jewell. He obviously had some gas in the tank but i guess MM needed to plan for the future.

Hope he gets another couple of years playing football....better not score against us!

Carlos is a player with far too much natural ability for a McCarthy team.
Good luck to him.

TimmyH thats cus u dared to question MM's judgement on Edwards.
If anybody thinks Anderson gave us more last season than Edwards would have then they should start watchimg snooker or darts cus they know nowt about football.
He was pushed out simply to play Anderson hoping he would come good just to justify getting rid of JET.
It clearly didnt work.
