French champions Paris Saint-Germain equalled Town's 31-match ongoing European home unbeaten record by defeating Cypriot side Apoel Nicosia 1-0 in the Champions League this evening.

The Blues' record goes back to the European Cup preliminary round tie with Maltese club Floriana in September 1962, which was won 10-0, to the 1-0 UEFA Cup second round first leg victory over Czech side Slovan Liberec in October 2002.

PSG’s run stretches from November 2006 and they have won their last 12 European home matches. Unlike Town, who have never been beaten at Portman Road in Europe, they had been defeated at home prior to the current ongoing run.

In 2007 Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, Town’s 1981 UEFA Cup final opponents, surpassed Town's run by one before they were finally defeated by Everton.

Meanwhile, Blues striker Daryl Murphy has reached 10 league goals faster than any Town player since Ray Crawford in the 1968/69 season.

Murphy hit his ninth and 10th goals in Town’s 16th match - his 15th as he missed the Blackburn fixture - Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Wolves, while Crawford reached the same total after 12 games of the 1968/69 campaign.

Previously, Crawford (1960/61 and 1963/63) and his equally legendary strike partner Ted Phillips (1961/62) hit the 10-goal mark after only 11 matches, a club record.

Prior to this season Marcus Stewart was quickest to the 10-goal mark in the 2000s, getting there in 17 games of Town’s UEFA Cup-qualifying 2000/01 Premier League season.

Elsewhere, BBC Radio Suffolk commentator Brenner Woolley has apologised for referring to callers to the station's post-match phone-in as "the great unwashed" in a half-time conversation with summariser Mick Mills which was inadvertently broadcast on Ipswich Player on Tuesday.

A Radio Suffolk spokesman said: “We have spoken to Brenner and made clear to him that these comments are unacceptable. Brenner accepts this and has apologised.”

The radio phone in does make me laugh, goes a little like this Brenner: "We have our first caller, what have you got to say" Caller: "Well I agree with Mick Mills, and we're not scoring from midfield, McCarthys got to sort this out" Brenner: "were you at the game?" Caller: "No, but I've been supporting Ipswich Town for 47 years, and listen to every other game on Radio Suffolk, and think Mick Mills voice is very exciting, and he makes some very good points about how we need to get better, and doesn't concentrate on the positives. Hunt needs to score goals, don't you agree Mick?"

TrumptonBlue added 09:38 - Nov 6 But that's not the same record. Town's record is the most home matches played in Europe without ever losing. PSG have lost at home plenty of times. They can go on a run of 3000 unbeaten home games for all I care, they'll still have lost some. Town haven't. As long as we never qualify for Europe again, we must stand a good chance of keeping that record for many many years. After a fairly standard 1 in 4 start, Murphy has scored 9 in his last 11. That's some decent form there.

PJH added 09:40 - Nov 6 Certainly some great nights in European competitions over the years.I was at all of the home games and a number of the away ones.Beating at Portman Road,among others Barcelona(twice)Real Madrid,both Milan clubs and Feyenoord. I only listen to the post match phone in after home games as I am usually at the away games but it does seem to be the same 6 or 7 callers each week saying much the same thing each week.

Still it was rather amusing to listen to that overall technical meltdown on Radio Suffolk. Quite a surprise to have half time reports from Woodbridge et al replaced with Joe Jackson's 'Steppin Out' and the sound of laptop keys clacking...

Those were brilliant nights and sadly we appear to be light years away from reproducing them but that said if we can only get some luck and win one of the cups - who knows? My sons are bored with my tales of Europe, but I don't care. We have a history to be proud of - something that cannot be said of a certain green and puke coloured team!

Does he think he is the better man than most Ipswich folk, where has he published his apology? Wouldn't want to see him lose his job as his commentary is great, he just needs to make sure he doesn't make silly comments that could be misconstrued as insulting, like that fool Keane.
