Chaplow Signs on Loan
Friday, 20th Feb 2015 15:42

Town have signed Millwall midfielder Richard Chaplow on a month's loan but with an agreement for him to stay for the rest of the season. The 30-year-old has been training with the Blues this week.

“I’m delighted with that one,” manager Mick McCarthy said. “He’s played a number of positions, either wide positions or centrally in midfield.

“He’s showed what a capable, comfortable player he is at this level training with us, he’s just come in and fitted in. Like Luke Varney, he’ll cover the play-offs."

He says neither Chaplow or fellow new loanee Varney, who are both out of contract in the summer, have been promised anything beyond the chance to impress him or other managers between now and the end of the season.

“I don’t promise anybody anything,” the Town boss said. “Once they come under the roof, they’ve got a chance.

"If they do really well and they shake the place up and they score goals and they get in the team, that’s the opportunity but I don’t tell them lies to get them down here.

“It’s ‘I want you on loan, that’s the opportunity because you’re out of contract, whether it’s me, whether it’s somebody else’.

“They both want to play. And the other thing is that we’re in the best position that if they do rip it up and they are under the roof and they might want to stay. It’s a good position to have for us.”

Chaplow, who will wear the Town number 14 shirt, has fallen out of favour at the Den with the last of his 10 appearances this season having come in Millwall’s 4-0 FA Cup replay defeat at Bradford City a month ago.

The midfielder says the switch ends his time at the Den: "My loan move to Ipswich pretty much brings my time to an end at Millwall.

"Things never really got going, if that be last year through injury or this year year by lack of opportunities.

"I'd like to go on record to thank everyone that welcomed me from the start and I have faith that results can be achieved and survival reached. But I have a new challenge and I can't wait."

Chaplow started his career with Burnley before moving on to West Brom in 2005. The Accrington-born midfielder spent time on loan at Southampton while a Baggies player, prior to joining Preston in 2008.

Another spell on loan with the Saints followed in 2010, before he made the switch more permanent in January 2011.

A former England U19, U20 and U21 international, Chaplow moved to Millwall initially on loan in March 2013, signing a two-year deal with the Lions that summer after his Southampton contract was terminated.

At least I have heard of both these players.
Wouldn't know what they are like but as usual both only on months loan so no problems with being lumbered by dross, unlike Paul Taylor,
Seem typical MM players from remarks on here, and with good coaching which is available at ITFC,who knows?
Would like to see a bit more stylish football played sometimes though, and players like Stewart and Henshall given a chance,if latter still not injured;even a big win to help goal difference.Have yet to experience this under MM although did beat Middlesborough 4.0 when Mick was ill and TC was in charge.
Still perhaps expecting a bit too much, having just watched Town beat Bristol City 6.0 when Jim Magilton was in charge(John Walters hat trick)in 2007.This was at least a dozen home wins on trot;but couldn't win away although were in play offs at time.

I agree that we need to strengthen and also give the two new signings a chance. But in comparison: derby signed a goal scorer in Bent and a creative goalscoring influence in Ince. We have signed Varney and Chaplow. Golf in class and ability is I am afraid fairly large. We needed a jonny Williams type player and a striker who can score goals. Still, I wish them luck.

Funny feeling Chapelow will not be a bench player for long and both signings give strength to the squad and makes me at least feel happier for the challenges ahead.

The fans can be another player----we can all do this together----COME ON!!

Whilst not overwhelmed with the signings MM might have pulled of a master stoke. 2 players who appear finished at their current club, will be champing at the bit to prove they are worth a chance either here or somewhere else at end of season or risk being left on scrap heap clubless. That determination to prove themselves is invaluable. Plenty were underwhelmed by chambers, mcgoldrick, Berra, bialkowski, Sears, Mings, hunt sisters etc... Let's give em a chance, before passing judgement.

2 experienced championship players signed on loan. I also think they've both played in the Premiership before??? I could be wrong? Sounds like a good bit of business to me! Welcome and good luck lads!

Strewth! This board is cracking at times. McCarthy has got us to 4th (fourth) in the league. Got players in on next to bugger all. Knows gazillions more about the game than any of us, yet we slate the signing of a guy who has not yet played and a couple of years ago was a £m player.

Berra, Murphy, McGoldrick et al, all the same.

Be positive!!

Mr Chaplow was responsible for my favourite ITFC fan heckle, at last year's New Den encounter, of 'CUT YOUR HAIR, YOU BEATNIK!', as Mr C prepared to take a corner in front of the rabid Blue Army.

Hat doffed to that fan, and to Mr Chaplin - welcome!

Lukeybluey - Varney played 30 games on loan at Blackpool (2010-11) in the Prem and Chaplow 11 games for West Brom (2004-06) and 3 games for Southampton (2012-13). Otherwise pretty solidly Championship level barring the odd season or two in League One.

Yes please, lets give them a chance to see what they can do.
Sensible pros brought in to do a job.
Hopefully they will do the business and could make all the difference if the injuries pile up.

Lots of fans on here looking for some reason to moan. We are 4th in the league and 3 points of top spot. Mick has done a fantastic job since he has come in and at the moment the squad we have is doing a fine job so any extra signings can only benefit us for however long they are at the club. In Mick we trust

Mick you said it yourself, they have a chance to impress and score goals but you cant do this on the bench.Yes our own lads deserve to stay in at this moment but if theres a dip in effort give those new lads a chance dont leave it to late.I hope the pairing of Anderson/Tabb is a distant memory we need proper football at PR no matter were it takes us.Good look everyone tomorrow 3pts please..COYB.

I appreciate where your coming from, we've had many a fine season, and produced some excellent sides, and I would imagine most of us could talk all night about our highs as Town supporters, but sometimes we have to accept changing times and adopt accordingly.
We aren't splashing cash.....Mick walked in to a club in turmoil, and has begged and borrowed players....many have worked out, some not, but let's give credit where it's due, by hoof ball, or whatever you want to call it, he and the players have worked bloody hard, and here we are, chasing automatic promotion, not play offs, automatic promotion!
Cheer yourself up Geoff, and cheer the boys on.....who knows where it may take us in the future...it sure beats looking over your shoulder, at the trap door, to the abyss!

without seeing him play a game, I really can't see how anyone can make any comment, speak as you find, if he gives 100%, it will be good enough for most people.

Sometimes a club can sign some rank bad players. Not unskilful, but with a poor attitude or temper. Then I can understand fans getting upset. But when you sign hardworking professionals who are very experienced as loan cover, and who may well offer more than we may imagine, why would anyone moan, whinge and throw their toys out of the pram? We have a manager who has turned this club round well. Trust his judgement and just recall where we have been for the last few years.

Wish Richard like Luke all the best while he is here, have to say a little underwhelmed if these are the only loan signings we make I really thought we would be looking for a little more quality, you don't just turn a player whose career is flagging in just a few weeks and we all know Mick is quite adept at getting the best out of players but in such cases as Murphy, Berra it takes a bit of time not overnight. Anyway have the feeling their only going to be bit part players at best. Still hoping for that QUALITY loan we all want.

Geoff - JW is injured
Some people on here probably said same about dids berra and bru and they turned out pretty well
What makes some of u 'experts'
And stop comparing us to clubs with deep pockets - if you have been paying attention to last season one thing u will realise is WE have no money to spend!
Get behind em

At this rate MM will be catching up on Paul Jewell in the number of loan signings. Why bring in Henshall and Stewart if they were not even going to warm the bench and why not give youth a fling - see what they're made of? I don't think they are better than what we have already and would have preferred for the likes of Ambrose to stake a claim for a regular place. Loan players tend to be stop gap and rarely do they become a cornerstone of our club - last season we had Green, Richardson and this season St. Ledger and Sammon come and go.

Wish people would think about our financial position before posting comments.

We are paying out 10,500 a week on Paul Taylor till the Summer. We haven't got the money to dish out high wages at the moment. Varney and Chaplow are excellent additions and may well be fantastic given our usual tactics (hoof-ball).

We have youngsters coming through that will also add to our squad depth. We have enough to seal a top 6 place, which is obviously MM's aim. Derby have taken a huge gamble. If they don't go up they could be in serious trouble. We have gone for the more moderate approach.
