Marathon Match for Charity Marks Anniversary
Wednesday, 4th Mar 2015 14:21

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Town’s 9-0 defeat at Manchester United and Keith Halman has come up with a unique way for Blues supporters to take out any remaining frustrations from that afternoon at Old Trafford and raise money for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people.

Keith, a Manchester United fan who also follows Town, has challenged friends, family and fellow footballers to score as many goals as possible in what he’s calling Town Vs United Redemption, a marathon match which will start at 9am and finish at 9pm on Saturday 14th March.

He hopes the game will be an opportunity for Town fans to “get their own back” in seven-a-side match to end all matches, whilst raising vital funds for children and young people with cancer.

The game will see more than 42 players of all ages and abilities play a total of four hours each, with two hours of rest for every hour played at the Goals Soccer Centre in College Drive off Grimwade Street.

Keith added: “Kurt and the staff at Goals have been really supportive of this challenge and I just hope that we have enough players on the day to help us make it through to 9pm: We’d love to have some ex-Town players on board!”

Players have been asked to each raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship on top of £5 entry fee and Keith hopes to raise a grand total of £3,000, which is enough to pay for a CLIC Sargent Social Worker for three weeks.

CLIC Sargent provides clinical, practical and emotional support to children and young people with cancer and their families. Cancer treatment for children is often gruelling and can start immediately, last as long as three years and take place many miles from home.

Daisy Turner, fundraising manager for Clic Sargent Suffolk, said: “We are thrilled that Keith has come up with such a unique fundraising idea and I hope lots of players will get involved to complete the challenge.”

To sign up, request a sponsor form or for more info contact Keith on 07870501996 or by email kmhalman@gmail.com or visit the Town vs United Redemption (9 till 9) Facebook page. To donate to CLIC Sargent, head to Keith’s Just Giving page.

Surely it was 8-0.

Not counting Ince's scandal of a freekick, taken when Forrest was being booked.

Seriously though, good luck

I always recall we beat them at PR and they missed out on the title by less than 3 points. How much would they have given to save a few of those goals for the match at PR?

Didn't it also have that classic chant answering the one from their fans of "we want 10": "we want 1!".
