Hewitt Set to End Season With U's
Thursday, 19th Mar 2015 16:33

Town boss Mick McCarthy has told his Colchester opposite number Tony Humes that he’s happy for full-back or midfielder Elliott Hewitt to stay at the Weston Homes Community Stadium for the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old, whose current spell is up after Saturday’s game away against his former loan club Gillingham, initially joined the U’s on loan in October and has now made 24 starts and has scored one goal for the League One side.

“It has been ongoing since we brought Elliott in on a month-by-month basis,” one-time Town central defender Humes told the Colchester Gazette.

“That’s how Mick wants it at Ipswich so if they need a recall then it is available.

“But Mick has said he is happy for him to stay for the season so I’d imagine it will be a quick phone call. I think Ipswich are happy with everything.

“Elliott has done well. He still has to learn the finer points of defending and there is still a lot of development to do, but he’s done well for us in every position he’s played for us. The last two games I think he has looked pretty solid.”

Wales U21 international Hewitt is out of contract with Town in the summer, although his deal includes the option for the Blues to extend his stay by another year.

Looks like Mick has written him off.Pity!
One of last players signed by previous managers;would just leave Luke Chambers(Paul Jewell)and our longest serving player Tommy Smith introduced from youth team by Joe Royal I believe?

I don't understand why he would start Hewitt in the season opener the last two seasons, Hewitt to have a more than solid game, and then never step on the pitch again?

would be better playing rb for us ,,mick is saying we have no alternatives to play in defense.

Oh well Chambers at right back for the rest of the season then!

Interesting. Just five senior defenders at the club. The fifth one playing midfield. But the club don't seem to care. Let's hope we don't get a couple of injuries.

who???...oh yeah Elliot Hewitt almost forgot about him. He had a couple of reasonable games at the start of the season (I believe in right midfield) and then soon went out of favour, and we all know what that means once they go out on loan...very unlikely to play 1st team football with us again.

Will be very disappointed if Hewitt is let go. He is similar to Mings, a raw, young defender, who is perhaps better going forward than defensively. He played very well at the beginning of the season at right midfield and that might actually be his position. Mick's been more than happy to put his faith in Mings, he signed him, would have been nice if he'd shown more faith in Hewitt. First sign of any mistakes and he's dropped for Chambo. Hope town extend his deal and give him a chance

Key quote here is from the manager of a Division 1 club, currently in a relegation place, who says:
"Elliott ... still has to learn the finer points of defending and there is still a lot of development to do".
This is why Mick has chosen to play Chambo at right back in preference to Hewitt & why he felt the need to send him out on loan.
Why he has chosen Chambo over Jonny Parr is another matter altogether of course!

Good experience for him, come back next season and challenge for right back. A year in league 1 playing regularly is exactly what he needed instead of sitting on the bench here.

Was probably our man of the match in the season opener against Fulham,then.....?

He's obviously a great prospect and we/Mick would be stupid to let him go..if he still needs to improve his defensive side it's because he's still only 20 & isn't that what Mick's here for - to improve the players?

From what i've seen of him he's no worse at right back than Chambers.

In the relatively few games that the lad has played for us i personally think he has done quite ok. Certainly not let us down.

Would be a crying shame if we let him slip through our fingers as i think he has great potential to do well for us in the future

was really impressed with him when he started at Aston Villa in the cup. looked pretty comfortable against far more experienced players.

Also looked decent against Fulham but was playing further forward that day. Maybe Mick just didn't fancy two young inexperienced full backs at the same time and the Way Mings started the season he was a almost guaranteed a start.

Hopefully he will return from his loan a better player and force his way into the team next season with Kyle Hammond as back up at Right back ? - we may finally see some balance in the back four
