Town Linked With Move for Birmingham Striker Friday, 10th Jul 2015 09:04 Town are being linked with a move for Birmingham City striker Clayton Donaldson.
According to The Sun, the Blues are set to offer £1.2 million for the 31-year-old frontman. Later reports elsewhere claim the Blues have already made an offer ultimately worth up to £2 million.
Donaldson, who is contracted to Birmingham for another year, was recently targeted by Reading, who had a number of offers turned down, the last reported to total more than £1 million after add-ons.
Bradford-born Donaldson played youth football with his hometown club before moving on to Hull City. While with the Tigers he spent time on loan with Harrogate (twice), Scarborough and Halifax.
Having made only five sub appearances for Hull the 6ft 1in tall striker moved on to York City in 2005 before spells with Hibernian, Crewe and Brentford prior to joining Birmingham in the summer of 2014.
Last season Donaldson scored 16 goals in 46 starts and two sub appearances for the St Andrew’s club.
Town making a move for another senior striker would appear unlikely as things stand with four currently on the books.
However, with both Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick the subject of interest from elsewhere, Donaldson may well be viewed as a potential replacement if one of them were to move on.
Speaking after the Reading interest, Birmingham manager Gary Rowett admitted that everyone is for sale at the right price but that he wants to keep hold of Donaldson.
“Every player has a price tag,” he said. “I think we are all aware of that. Clayton is 31 - but if we were to lose one of our better players then we would have to replace him and there’s always a value to that.
“If you look at the Clayton situation, regardless of any interest shown, we have not solicited any bids, we have not enticed any bids. He is a player we don’t want to sell.
“It’s just speculation, I fully expect and want Clayton to be our player next year, he is an integral part of what we are doing.”

Most people think he will replace Murphy. I have a feeling that if we are trying to get Donaldson (which I struggle to believe) it will be to replace McGoldrick. He is desperate to get back near Nottingham where his wife and family are. My husband's Derby supporting friend thinks it's a done deal.

I'm not sure about this family issue McGoldrick's having. Why did his ENTIRE family just up and leave?! They're only a few hours away for crying out loud! There are blokes that work far more demanding jobs, much further away and for much less money. Besides, your average footballer retires at 36 - Mrs McGoldrick'll be sick of the sight of him soon enough. Sounds like a nonsense to me... And be careful what you wish for regarding that Josh McEachran laddy. I thought that was a shrewd bit of business initially, but he's never really stuck it out any club and at his age - and with his alleged talent - he really should've established himself by now. Classic example of a kid who had it too easy, too soon...

If Murph or McGoldrick leaves and we go for another striker, I like Nahki Wells at Huddersfield from what I saw last season on the Football League show (hardly top scouting material I know but he looks promising and similar maybe to Bent in that he has pace but perhaps not the finesse of a Murphy) but obviously hoping neither leaves. Still - Mick knows better than me! (most of the time!)

Stewart looked a good player when playing against us but that could be because we didn't have a decent right back. Now he isn't even included in pre season tour!Be careful what you wish for guys. Have said before that wouldn't want any of our players to leave now(except Tabb and cant see anybody wanting him!). However still think we need a right back and mid-field playmaker;so am hopeful that eventually Mick would add these two players to the squad, hopefully paying a bit of cash because I think that you can only go so far with freebies and loans, although Bosmans are a different matter. These transfers could come out of the blue as most of McCarthy's have;but in not out please Mick.

Re above post Palace have just signed Cabaye for 10m;so perhaps Jonny Williams could fill the midfield role now?

Good player. He completely out muscled Tommy Smith in the home game. No Daryl Murphy but strong and quick and decent

Can't believe they would pay that amount to a journeyman, would sooner invest decent money into a younger version,31 ain't over the hill by any stretch but come off it. Here's to the next rumour!

The most important thing in this story is that THE SUN printed it. My son, your son anybodys son could have scribbled it on the wall of your nearest public loo and it would have felt more credible. They print utter bollocks No page 3 no party

Blues 1 ... The difference between freebies and Bosmans is that freebies are players released as clubs do not think they are good enough where as Bosmans are players clubs want to keep but the players want to leave generally making them better players
blues1 added 21:05 - Jul 10
No surco.a bosman is a player who is out of contract, regardless of whether the club want to keep him or not. A bosman is simply put, a free transfer.

And the club wanting to keep him doesn't mean he's a better player. For example, let's say Christian right naldo was out of contract and his club decided to let him go. Does that mean he's a worse player than if they wanted to keep her m? No, he's the same player. There are many reasons why clubs allow players to leave at the end of their contracts. Its not always because they don't think they're food enough

Right back is a priority this summer. We have 4 good strikers. If we fail to sign one it will prove once and for all that Mick just will not drop one of Smith, Berra and Chambers no matter what. Its not fair playing Chambers there, he does his best but gets ripped to shreds by tricky wingers. We have 8 million quid Mick get a proper right back in.
