McCarthy: Young Full-Backs Could Go Out on Loan
Tuesday, 18th Aug 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says young full-backs Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock could go out on loan to gain first-team experience. The Blues already have 18-year-old centre-half Matt Clarke out on loan at Portsmouth and impressing in League Two.

Emmanuel (above) - who was 18 on Saturday - made his first-team debut in the 2-2 opening day draw at Brentford, while Kenlock made his first senior appearance in the 2-1 Capital One Cup win against Stevenage last Tuesday.

“I spoke to Josh Emmanuel today,” McCarthy said at yesterday’s pre-match press conference.

“I said to him that he must be disappointed [not to have played on Saturday] but that he must also have known what was going to happen - Chambo’s my captain and he was always going to play, that was never in doubt. The back four was never going to be in doubt.

“And the same for Myles Kenlock (below). I thought he was excellent on the day and I’m sure if he plays again in the cup, people will be looking [at him with a view to taking him on loan] and he’ll be better than a lot of players other clubs have got, certainly lower down the leagues, and Josh will as well.

“If we can get them some game time in the league it would be great for them. Clarkey is doing really well, they’re delighted with him.”

Keeper Michael Crowe and another full-back, Kyle Hammond, are other young players McCarthy might look to get out on loan to gain senior experience.

Meanwhile, the Town manager says he’s received no interest in winger Cameron Stewart, who he made available for transfer earlier in the summer: “Not as yet, nobody’s contacted me about him.”

Get used to the fact that McCarthy's chosen back four has Smith CB and Chambers RB. He has confirmed it in his interview. Whether you like it or not accept it.

3 into 2 doesn't go. It is obvious that MM wants all three centre backs in the team and this is ,to his mind, the best solution. There are plenty of centre backs playing at the highest level who are playing on their supposedly weaker side. John Terry for instance is obviously right footed but plays on the left.
So far as our youngsters are concerned, I totally trust MM andf TC's judgement about them playing out on loan and I'm sure the youngsters want to play every week and would rather be playing in League 1 or 2 on a regular basis than warming our bench.
I'm equally sure that both Emmanuel and Kenlock (and probably Clarke) will be playing significant parts in our promotion push this year and that will only be helped by them toughening up playing regular league football.
We have one of the most experienced and respected Managerial teams in the country yet half the posters on here are constantly going on about how they should be doing this and that, how they can't see what is blindingly obvious to all these "experts".
Of course as fans we are allowed to comment ,criticise, etc. but in the end I'm always going to accept that MM has probably made his decision for the best reason.
Take last Saturday for instance: if he had played Emmanuel at right back, moved Chambers to the centre and left out Smith, would we have got the winning goal? Who knows but Smith does get more goals than Chambo.
Alternatively MM probably knows that Chambo commands enormous respect in the dressing room, probably even more so as he is happy to play at RB for the good of the team.

Well said RANGER I think 50% of the posters are frustrated underachievers in life.

Open your minds guys. I think MM is sensible enough to realise he won't be sending them out on loan unless he's already lined up McGhee or similar as quality in the back 4.

he also is well aware of the Smith/Chambo dilemma and is why he's after McGhee after all. New guy comes in as RB, Chambo goes into the centre and we have Smith and Parr on the bench, with 2 promising youngsters playing first team weekly football and able to drop in easily if we need them urgently. I think thats the back 4 pretty sorted in my view.

Loans should be seen as positives. With a clause to get them back quickly, it means they're are already match-fit and more likely to make an impact than if they were sat on the bench or in the stands watching the first team play.

Looking forward to a great performance tonight and a win against Burnley. 7 points from 3 pretty tough opening fixtures would be a superb start to the season, and playing attractive, exciting football for a refreshing change!

Back four never in doubt? So that's it for our RB then? And RCB? :/

I remember reading an article in which Andros Townsend stated that he only really had confidence in himself when at seventeen and eighteen he knew that he could easily play L2 football whilst on loan at Orient. Now he is in the Premier League and has a few England caps.

If both Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock are to go out on loan until Christmas and come back full of confidence then that can only be a good thing.

Young players have to play in order to get better — think Douglas or Coke may get in the way of McDonnell's development — but then again I'm not the manager

I posted this on another thread..... kind of relevent here too......

If we had played a lower table team or a newly promoted team, and Mick had started Emmanuel, i wouldve understood him being dropped for the slightly bigger game against Wednesday.

However he we didnt, we played Brentford, who finished higher than us last season. He played well, shakey start but ultimately a cracking debut.

Micks mantra is play well and youll keep your place, give me a headache for selecton etc. Now not saying that He's not gonna play for us this season again, but why not give it 2-3 gameswith the same back 4 to see how it works? If it doesnt its still early enough in the season to sort it out.

Im no expect but i can still see 'weak points', 'targeted areas', from the stands. So that means all of Micks staff can too! Like others have said, its not about hating the player, i feel sorry for them! playing out of postion and if/when something goes wrong they're the ones we hang out to dry!

Playing a balanced back 4 with players in the right positions can only benefit the players and the team!

Bit of a jumbled point with no real substance but thats my opinion........

I think the reason for sending out the two young full-backs on loan is simple. Mick wants to get them out playing competitive football week in week out, so that they can slot into the Team, when required, at a later date. Sounds sensible to me as both look to be outstanding prospects. As far as Luke Chambers is concerned and I think he is a great Captain, I would love to see him playing in his best position but we've probably worn out the record on this request. Just wondering. All these teams keep stats nowadays so I'd love to know how many 50-50 balls he plays out of defence in a season!

Chambers wasn't that poor on Saturday, don't know what game everyone was watching! He got caught under the ball leading up to that Mattias shot against the post, otherwise acquitted himself perfectly well. Actually got forward a fair bit and put some crosses in, something that does't necessarily come easy to him...

Look, the defense IS imbalanced, i'm not denying it. But McCarthy has developed a system and - like it or not - IT'S WORKING. Wednesday were limited to very few chances on Saturday. Another point people need to remember that footballers are humans and need to be managed accordingly; dropping Smith just like that would shatter his confidence and is the sort of crass, insensitive thing a clown like Roy Keane would do...

I suspect drafting in an experienced, specialist right back is on the cards, but it's not priority number 1. We're off to a good start and looking the business. Let's just enjoy it, eh...

I think MM has done a great job with the youngsters since he took over. Arm around Mings whist he waited in the wings. Careful time management of Bishop and now helping the next generation get ready. I would much prefer Chambers experience at RB than a rookie with bags of potential for the promotion push, however an experienced RB might be a different matter. Emmanuel (and others) could come back from loan better / experienced players more equiped to challange the established pros.

What does MM have to do to win over some posters on here?

We all know that the prefect balance is to have one left footer and one right footer at CB. This means we should play Chambers with EITHER Berra or Smith. Berra is the better player so for me gets the nod and Smith has to warm the bench and wait for his chance. Simple as that!
If Mick insists on playing Smith and Berra together any reason why he cant swap them over and have Smith on his stronger left side?

Phil.... Just so we can be clear on our comments, are there any statistics given as to why Smith was in the team of the week (even whilst playing out of position) and no other town player was please?

I'm confused why a top manager picks him, he's captained his country and whoever picks TOTW rated him.

I've not seen anything other than the goal highlights so can't really comment further beyond asking questions. How is TOTW picked please? Is it based on objective statistics or subjective opinion please?

Thanks

Whilst still in the cup I personally see no reason to send the good youngsters out on loan. I thought Emmanuel was excellent and could have improved even more in the team at RB

This debate will go on and on as MM will not budge on Chambers and is one of the few things that I disagree with him on with this scenario. The opposition clearly target our right flank because they know Chambers is not comfortable in that position. Chambo gets caught out with his positioning and with pace all too often, and this has cost us on several occasions with Saturday being a case in point. Don't get me wrong I love the bloke as he is an inspiration but it not fair on him to play him out of position. Yes it is would be tough on Smith to change things but as some have stated on here Tommy Smith is unfortunately an accident waiting to happen - not completely his fault as he is playing on the wrong side of the defence. As for loaning out the boys surely this won't happen until we are out of the League Cup.

Matthieandmarshall... Can't read Micks mind but is be confident that it is because Smith is faster than Berra and so provides better cover for chambers at RB.

Even John Terry can be subbed early.... so put chambers in the middle at right CB and rotate Berra and Smith at Left CB DEPENDING on the particular threats

Emmanuel at RB with chambers doing all the talking and leading the line???

I'm afraid this is a situation of 'jobs for mates'. Luke Chambers dont get me wrong doing great job as captain the fans love him because of the fist pump. But when it comes to playing football, Chambers is so limited. If he is going to play he has to play center back or not at all, A proper full back who can get up and down, can cross the ball and who is good on the ball will be the difference between success and failure. So many times especially against the good sides they have targeted Chambers and so many times had joy. Stop being so stubborn Mick one of the 3 center backs must be on the bench unless its 3-5-2
