Varney in U21s Against Watford - Updated Monday, 7th Dec 2015 12:47 Luke Varney will continue his comeback from injury when the Blues’ U21s face Watford at Playford Road this afternoon (KO 1pm). The 33-year-old, who is currently a free agent having been released by Blackburn in the summer, has been sidelined since rupturing his achilles in the play-offs in May while on loan with the Blues. The striker or midfielder underwent his rehab at Playford Road and returned to action when he played 45 minutes of last week’s behind-closed-doors U21s friendly against Southend which Town won 2-1. Manager Mick McCarthy was delighted to see Varney playing again after such a lengthy absence and confirmed that the club and the player are in discussions regarding a contract. “It’s great for him [to get back in action], he’s such a great lad and a really good pro and I’m trying to do something with him,” McCarthy said. Also set to feature for Mark Kennedy’s side this afternoon are Adam McDonnell, Kyle Hammond, Alex Henshall and Myles Kenlock. U21s: Henly, Hammond, Kenlock, McDonnell, Woolfenden, Robinson (c), McKendry, Guldbrandsen, Varney, Ford, Henshall. Subs: Marsden, Cole, Downes, Meldrum, Morris.
