Chambers: Leeds Boss’s Comments Disrespectful and Staggering
Thursday, 14th Jan 2016 18:06

Luke Chambers has hit back at Leeds manager Steve Evans for his comments after the Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Whites on Tuesday, which the Town skipper felt were “disrespectful” and “staggering”.

Evans accused Town of simply “lumping” the ball up to striker Daryl Murphy, said they had been “as bad in spells as we were” and dismissively added that if the Blues are “the benchmark [for the play-offs] then we’ll take that benchmark”.

Chambers, who scored Town’s equaliser five minutes after the break with Brett Pitman netting the winner in injury time, said he and the rest of the squad were less than impressed.

“Myself and the boys felt very disappointed by his post-match comments, having read them after the game,” Chambers writes in his column in the programme for Saturday’s match against Preston.

“I don’t whether he’s addressing the Leeds supporters who weren’t at the game to try and save face but I’ve no idea where he’s coming from.

“Yes, they look the lead and had a good 10-15-minute spell but after that it was one-way traffic.

“For him to then disrespect us as a team and say that if we are the benchmark for sixth place then he will take that, is honestly quite staggering.

“At the end of the day, we’ve walked away with six points off them this season and we are the ones who are in the play-off places fighting to get into the Premier League.

"I had a lot of respect for him before the game but I've lost some of that now.

“Nobody at Portman Road on Tuesday, even the most avid Leeds fan, would have thought they deserved to beat us, apart from Steve Evans and for him to even suggest that after the game is, in my opinion, disrespectful to the football club, the manager, the players - to everyone really.

“To their credit, I saw that a lot of Leeds fans disagreed with their manager and held their hands up, admitting we were the better team and deserved to win.

“I haven’t looked at the stats but I’m confident that we would have had more possession, more shots and more chances in their box. The stat that matters though is that we won the game.”

Evans was also highly critical of referee Fred Graham after the game - “I thought he was absolutely garbage" - and the official wouldn’t leave the field following the final whistle until the furious Leeds boss had been removed from the tunnel by stewards.

Very unpleasant guy, noticed the referee had to speak to him during the game. Can't imagine Mick doing anything like that. He was annoyed that we spoilt his unbeaten run.

Think back to Tuesday evening the Leeds goal came from the first long ball of the game, ball played back to centre back 60 yard punt downfield. Chambers header found its way to striker who scored. Long ball worked well for Leeds Mr, Evans

I agree the ref was shocking but what planet is he on we completely bossed them from 13 seconds until the end, had loads of possession and for the most part played out from gerks and into the midfield. Makes me respect mick even more, he might talk a load of rubbish about how good we were even tho we got beat but never runs down the side that's beat us, shame on you glad you manage Leeds actually feel sorry for them that they've got such a t""t as a manager you'll get what you deserve sweet fa .... I am sure the management and players will take great satisfaction from this ill informed, sour and inaccurate diatribe, it should make victory even sweeter. What is interesting is that there are some in here - even the usually sensible jas099 - who buy into this jaundiced criticism of their own team. And this after such an excellent passing performance that was the very opposite of the criticism levied!! For heavens sake. Every other manager and team in this division respects a McCarthy team and is fully aware of the many positive qualities that go with any side he puts together and it's not just hoof ability. Rather than constantly belittling our successes and maximising our - obvious - shortcomings, shouldn't we celebrate and get behind our team rather than find something in this sour fat bastard's bias to agree with??!!!

@blueboy1981 You're not too clever with accents are you! Steve "pr*ck" Evans is from Glasgow not Yorkshire! That's Mick our manager who's from Yorkshire. Steve Evans talking sour grapes & won't last too long at Leeds but then no manager does, especially under that Italian crook! One time "big" Leeds are now just a f*cking joke & way below us! So p*ss off Evans & Leeds, love beating them! COYTB!

Quite disgusted with some of the derogatory comments on here which range from derogatory to disgusting, many of which an ITFC Supporter would NEVER have been associated with in the past.
But, then again, we are not allowed to mention the past, and standards once set.

When words such as 'nob' have to be used to describe someone you disagree with, I think it is time my contribution to the forum ended. And duly will.

Thanks to the people who have supported my posts along the way - it has genuinely been much appreciated, during which time I trust you have appreciated a genuine, and decent opinion, which is all i have ever tried to post.

Best wishes to you all.

Funny thing is that their first goal was from a hoofball, we then made a mistake which they pounced on.

Chambers is right to speak out. Displaying good leadership on/off the pitch and supporting the team. Rude and disrespectful remarks should always be challenged, even if people like Evans have previous, as it helps to illustrate the difference in values. That's the benchmark that's been set.

Let's think about Managers who have a bit of class - not working or upper - but they way they come across. I seem to remember Mick McCarthy making generous comments about Evans last season before a Rotherham match. Mick doesn't whinge and spends (some may say too much time) being generous to the opposition. He knows where we stand in English football and when we are in the top four of the Premiere League he might behave like Ferguson and play mind games and bitch referees.Frankly, Evans just lost it.

Evans has a reputation for talking hot air, I guess some would say he's one of the games characters! Personally wouldn't pay much attention to his comments, he's only zoned in on our 'reputation ' for playing long balls. It deflects away from his team losing.
I can remember Evans having a bust up with Lee Johnson a couple of seasons ago, he called Johnson a midget, and in return, Johnson called him fat-boy!

His comments were daft but I am delighted by them. As a player, knowing I and the team had played well,I would respond by becoming more determined to show the fat git that we can pass the ball accurately 5 or 50 yards. I would take great delight over the next few months showing how good a team we are becoming under MM. We now keep going for 95 minutes winning a number of matches in injury time similar to Liverpool and Man U at their best( not that we are currently as good as they were but we have developed the same spirit ). I am now really believing we can qualify automatically this year. Welcome to the premiership ITFC

Personally, I think Luke & the players should do their talking on the pitch, keep their thoughts about this in the dressing room, after all, it was the ramblings of an average madman manager who probably won,t be in a job for long anyway.

Blueboy, I think n**e calling should be banned on here. You have a right to your opinion. I disagree about our football. Mick is a pragmatist, he covers up the weaknesses. I think this time have shown that they can play and may even get better. Let's see.

Blueboy. I agree about name calling. Often I am about to press the 'agree' and then someone is offensively denigrated. It's quite possible to hold very strong opinions without using expletives.

Thank you for doing Mick's team talk on Saturday Evans. Just let the boys watch that video for 5 mins, job done!

In this case, not only is his opinion off but he failed to engage with reality. And to add further ignominy to his position, everyone knows he is wrong .. except him.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Evans is known for being an obnoxious C-unit right back to his Crawley and Boston days. An embarrassment to the game. He'll be gone soon.

Don't agree with those calling Evans a 'nobody '! The man has climbed from non league football up to where he is now, managing a massive club, steeped in history . Like him or not, he arouses much debate, and let's be brutally honest, he's touched upon a very delicate subject in regards to style of play being witnessed more often than not at Portman Rd!!!!!

Sometimes we are not sure what we are listening to or reading. I have watched Evans interview again. If he did have a sensible logical Chairman / Owner he would be asked to apologise not just to ITFC but to his own teams supporters for being an untruthful, sour and unjustifiably a member of League Managers Association.
Sadly though Leeds owner and this current manager wear clothes made of same cut so little likely to happen( My avid, and oddly good guy, Leeds friend so so embarrassed by Evans outburst)
PS...Blueboy 1981, you have posted comments that have " thrust" others to the keyboard, many of your posts regarding the playing style of football have admirers, and others you might have encouraged to air some " opposing views"" . I do honestly believe that you did get it wrong, this time, with your Evans comments, but don't hang your boots up too early...it is a forum for debate, sensible debate, we would like to think, (even though we all know those that only have one unshakeable viewpoint, don't be like them)
